  1. No, I don't have this problem...with books. Now, with CD's...yes, I definitely have this problem. I do read a lot, I just know exactly what I want to read. I do a lot of special orders and graphic novels. My last purchases looked something like: Sergei Lukianenko/Sergey Lukyanenko/however you want to spell it: Nightwatch/Daywatch/Twilightwatch. Tommyrot: The Art of Ben Templesmith (I need to pick up Blood-Stained Sword) Y: The Last Man, Vol. 9, Motherland Blade of the Immortal, Vol. 15 (for some reason, I can't seem to find my copy -- I got a little lost after 13, and need to start over 14-17) Berserk, Vol. 17 ...and a bunch of Palm OS programming books, and a linux book or two -- I don't actually read these, I just put them on my shelf at work to make me look smart.
  2. Well, they're still interesting -- not trance trance, like ... I dunno, pick some techno compilation of Trance Traxx -- but...yeah, pretty much. They went psychedelic for a while (forecasting the change in the weather with tracks like "Moon Revolutions"...and then Second Nature is pretty much a trance record with vocals. Tracks like "Lucidogen" are still very good, but nothing like ...Plays Kurt Weil or T.V. Sky and/or Only Heaven, my favourite two albums by them.
  3. Saturday Night -- Crack the Sky -- they rocked. Were having an off night, but they still managed to rock. Friday Night -- High Blue Star, Red This Ever, and Attrition (25 year anniversary tour) -- High Blue Star, in particular, blew me away. Attrition -- like the Young Gods and others of similar ilk -- have become a trance band. Laurie sang with them, she's a very powerful singer. I really need to get my shit together and start doing this shit myself.
  4. I don't see it that way -- as everybody winning. Yes, there are a lot more options, but some of them are crappy. You get enough newbies burned (and some of those "newbies" write for stereophile), and the whole hobby leaves a bad taste in their mouth. So that cancels the growth that he "helped" (he didn't do it by himself, he just gave a place for people to go when headwize was frequently down due to bandwidth restrictions). That still doesn't take care of the profit, nor of the burned newbies. Some of my best friends are newbies. L, I was a newbie once, and still am when it comes to DIY and understanding design. So what you're saying is, who cares about me? Well fuck you very much.
  5. You say that like it's a bad thing. Those are all hypothetical what-if statements. They're there to make you think.
  6. You're also being wrong. What if it had started out as a co-op? What if, say, 17 individuals got together, pooled their resources, and bought a domain name, set up a forum, and so on? What if one of those individuals had a 50% share, and the other 16 had a 50% share -- who would be the "owner"? What if one of those individuals had invested 98% as much as everyone else combined (49/51 split kind of thing)? What if one of those individuals had invested 102% as much as everyone else combined (51/49 split)? What if someone initially invested 51%, but then, as expenses grew, that individual stopped paying as much, so that the total outlay became 49%? I disagree that it's as clear-cut as you would so idealistically like to describe it, Mr. paint-by-numbers.
  7. Yeah, but much of the time, they're still digesting, whereas the lawn is mown, past completive.
  8. It stopped being completely his as soon as he started accepting money from sponsoring members and advertisers. Plus, he plays it like it's a public forum, so I beg to differ.
  9. No, this time, it was my fault. Apparently, I have two accounts there -- dustych, and Dusty_chalk. The Dusty_chalk one allowed me to log in, but not to leave a message (there was some confusion when I changed email accounts) -- the other one works fine. I waited a couple days too long on those Shahinians. Oh, well.
  10. I can't seem to send a message -- what am I doing wrong? I'm using Firefox...
  11. We've actually discussed studio monitors a little already. TheSloth posted one that had a really flat frequency response -- M-Audio, I believe, and it was supposedly really cheap. I haven't heard it though. I also bought TheSloth's Quad 12L powered/actives, which suits my office quite well for enjoyable listening. I'm not sure how accurate they are. He cursed me by telling me they had a midbass to upper-bass bloat, which I now hear, but it's not as intruding to me as it was to him, so I don't mind it so much. I intend to eventually pair it with a sub -- probably a SVS SB-12Plus. But I don't think I've discussed much my favourites -- the Mackie HR824's -- really dig those, they're sort of the Sony MDR-V6's of the active monitor world -- too bright for most people, but perfect for monitoring, in which case you need revealing equipment. I actually don't get tired of their sound too much. If you're going to use a sub, they've since introduced the HR624's, which are probably perfectly adequate. Which Dynaudios did you try, the BM5A's? I've wanted to hear them... I've also owned KRK V8's, which I really regret letting go, they sounded pretty good. But I hardly ever used them, so the regret is minimal. A musician friend of mine uses...um...Alesis's, I think. Or maybe that's the amp? I think they're Alesis passive monitors, too, now that I think about it. They sound alright, but what's good is that he makes really good-sounding music with them. Link. Are you getting these for pleasurable listening, or for studio stuff? IMHO, that makes a big difference.
  12. I just finished a bagel imported from New York with cream cheese (chives and onions by Philadelphia).
  13. Ticket to the Crack the Sky show tonight. They ruled. And I don't think I have ever felt so much middle-aged titty pressed against me in such a short span of time ever in my entire life.
  14. You are insane. Please post your results.
  15. Volume level effects total current going through headphones, so therefore yes. And yet, I wouldn't turn it up too loud, otherwise you might blast your drivers. I would leave it on the loud side of how loud you usually listen, and no louder.
  16. Cool, I haven't had really good Indian in a while. I'll make the trip. My favourite Indian is the Bombay Curry Company in Arlandria (North Alexandria, almost Arlington).
  17. Hmmm...I wonder what they would sound like out of a balanced beta22...?
  18. I love the smell of most curries, Indian, Thai, or otherwise. Seconded.
  19. Dan -- you mentioned Geneves -- did you mean Raymond Weil Geneve, or Geneva watches (which appears to be an entirely different brand), or something else again?
  20. Dude, you have the best taste -- they're my favourite restaurant, period. Ever. Entire planet. Uh...which one is Goong Gra Prow? Goong is shrimp? So shrimp basil, essentially? That does sound good. My favourite dish that they ever made was a special: Lard Na Gra Prow Gai. Drunken noodles made sweet by adding carrots and onions.
  21. When people complain about me blowing my nose on the subway -- would you rather see snot dripping from my nose?
  22. Jesus, another entropic thread... Oh, well, I'll make my one contribution: Drunken Noodles with Chicken from Pilin.
  23. No, I usually hear it out of one of the ridiculous SDS XLR's -- Hirsch's setup -- it had bass, but it was definitely on the lean side. I'm also not sure how well it handles busy music -- I'll have to listen to it again.
