  1. Maternity coverage is outrageous. That's because it's expensive to have kids, and risky. 2 of my 4 kids births were over $20k (before insurance). Anthem has a plan with a $2500 deductible for $156 a month, 100% coverage after the deductible is met, all preventative care covered. It's another $800 a month for maternity coverage, which I agree is insanity.
  2. As a point of reference, I just went to blue cross, and got a quote for major medical coverage for my family. $261 a month, $2400 out of pocket maximum, $1200 per person deductible, everything else covered at 100%. Put the other $139 a month in a medical savings account to cover 1 person's deductible. $400 a month for medical insurace for a family of 6, maximum additional out of pocket of $732 the first year. Any leftover money continues to belong to you.
  3. Ok, I've got a solution: Tax lawyers at 80% and use the revenue to pay for health insurance for the middle class.
  4. Ok, I was wrong with the apartment, apparently coastal nh isn't cheap But I'd bet not a lot of people in portsmouth make less than $40k either.
  5. I don't claim to. I'm saying that I don't see a better solution to the problem than our current system.
  6. Ok, figure $2500 take home. $1200/month housing (rent, heat, water, etc) $ 600/month food $ 400/month insurance Leaves $300 a month. Not a lot, but doable.
  7. I just did a quick craigslist search and found a 3 br for $700.
  8. Even in portsmouth, it's possible to get a 3br apartment for $700. It's tough being in the lower middle class, but it's doable. It's priorities, and unfortunately, lots of people make poor choices. I am not that far removed from living on significantly less than $20k/yr. I know the compromises involved. Many of my friends are still there.
  9. Yes, don't wait to get coverage until after you find out you have a problem.
  10. Again, $35k a year, you can afford major medical coverage.
  11. Major medical coverage for a family of four is $400 a month or less. If you can't afford $400 a month for health insurance at $40k/yr, you need to review your priorities.
  12. I'm still thinking about it. Reviews are mixed. Some people love them, some have problems. I'm either gonna wait til 500gb internal drives are available, get an uglier 1tb external, or a 1tb ministack v2.
  13. $1388 is pretty pricey. A mac mini + a 1tb time capsule is significantly cheaper than that, and would be significantly more functional . Or a mac mini, a 1tb ministack drive to go on top of it, and an apogee duet.
  14. We have medicaid for people making less than a certain threshhold. It's not the poor homeless kids with sick parents who aren't being helped. It's middle classed people who decide that they'd rather have a newer car than health insurance. Does it suck to get cancer? Of course it does. I believe that we should have a safety net. No solution is perfect. But I've yet to see an option put forth that's better than the system we currently have.
  15. Everyone in this country is guaranteed medical treatment. Go to any public hospital, and they won't turn you away. Do you incure obligations? Of course, this isn't a socialist country. You have to pay for what you get. But medical bills also don't appear on your credit report. You're not guaranteed every treatment option, but you'll be taken care of.
