  1. Government isn't necessarily bad in theory, only in practice.
  2. I'd love to see an example of something done by the government being more efficient than something done by private enterprise. Governments can't even handle getting people a driver's license efficiently.
  3. I believe that there should be a safety net. People should get a reasonable level of healthcare. Right now, that's provided by the hospitals. Most hospitals write off millions of dollars in care for people who can't afford the help they get. I don't think people should get all their healthcare for free. Or even most. How people live affects their health. The option to pay for better care should always be available, and if we make it unavailable in this country, people will go elsewhere for it. See the canadian example. People who can afford to go to the US for their healthcare do. Profit is one of the incentives to better service and advances in treatments. You don't have an inalienable right to be free from disease and injury. If you do drugs, and get hepatitis, I shouldn't have to pay for you to get a transplant. So if it's accepted that there are things that should be covered and some that shouldn't, then as a society, we need to determine where that threshhold is. Right now in the US, people under a certain income are covered by medicaid. So most of the people who aren't covered by any insurance have chosen not to have insurance in order to have money elsewhere. That leaves illegal immigrants. Do we really want to set up a system where we treat anyone who comes into this country for any problems they might have, whether or not they're here legally?
  4. If I can sell my airport extreme N I'd be interested in a time capsule. Curious as to how well it'd work as a home for itunes media files
  5. My free cash went to shelving units for the basement and garage floor tiles this weekend
  6. Awesome. The touch is on my "want" list.
  7. This is why people want you to go the fuck away. You don't care about the discussion, you're not even on topic. You just want attention. Go back to 4chan.
  8. happy birthday vince! Just remember, Jennifer said it's over, so no more drunk dialing.
  9. I had friends in alaska who climbed denali (mt mckinley). That sounded like enough of a pain I wouldn't want to try anything harder The idea of extreme training for 6 months prior makes it completely not worth it.
  10. RAID is better than no protection. Not everyone needs double mirrored backups with a hot site
  11. I'd have to agree. Why did you go to an emergency room for a rash from a food allergy?

  13. Be careful citing wikipedia when discussing academics. Wikipedia is a very politicized source.
  14. Why not? Why not negotiate for your best interest? It's the whole "I shouldn't have to negotiate for health care" thing that got us in the mess we're in now. If you don't negotiate (and that doesn't always just mean about price, they can make effective but better value decisions when treating you if they know cost is a concern), then they will choose the latest greatest options to treat you, which are often cost prohibitive.
  15. Things may be different in florida than in pennsylvania. Pennsylvania allows jurisdiction shopping, so all the cases happen in philadelphia, where the prospective jurors love sticking it to the rich doctors. And I've never met an OB/GYN who drives a $100k car.
  16. My experience is if you don't have insurance, most medical providers and hospitals are glad to negotiate a better deal, too.
  17. So far at least less than half of the voting population believes in universal health care, thank god. I don't think that'll change in the next election cycle Mike, As to what's good about our current system, ask the canadians that come here for health care. What's good is that we have the best and the brightest working on making things better. Unfortunately, not everyone gets the best coverage, but on the whole, people mostly get what they need, at the very least. Ask the english and the canadians if they'd like the option of paying for care out of pocket if given the chance. I'd argue that your profession is at least partly to blame for the state of health insurance in this country, not to mention the cost of health care. Medical malpractice has gotten out of hand, driving good doctors out of business for lack of the ability to pay insurance premiums. Doctors are stuck spending more time covering their asses rather than trying to cure people. But I'm going to bed, so this is a debate that will be for another time. And not canjam
  18. The comcast dvr is tivo now? I may have to switch to cable.
  19. You can with a mac create a network. It'd be wifi, and then your ipod touch would connect to THAT netowrk (and nothing else, basically) in order to control the mini.
  20. VNC and signal don't actually stream anything, they just control your computer. And if you have the mini create it's own wireless network, it doesn't have to talk on the work network at all. Just have the touch link up to the mini's created network.
  21. I think I'm gonna pick up a newertech ministack v2 and a 750gb pata drive. Stacks with the mini, can more than handle the performance needs of a media server.
  22. If you're close to getting the picos, I'd still get them, then sell one and buy a duet
  23. Get the airport express (or a timecapsule). You won't regret it.
