buncha tubes came in today. unfortunately one of the 6as7g's has a loose base (the top half isnt sealed to the base) but all other 11 tubes arrived safely (they pass the visual inspection and the rattle test). currently playing the 421A and an rca blackplate 12au7 which replaced the stock 12au7. the amp is full of surprises. MUCH cleaner on the top end. some of the bloomyness is gone. the bass is less flabby. will try swapping out the 421a for the 5998 later tonight and see how things change if they do at all. for now, amp and i are very happy. thanks doc

vicki, you just took me back to so many summers as a child that i spent reading archie digests out in the sun. good times. i bet that thing will sell like hot cakes...sad, yes. good business plan for idiots who are happy with the dollar earbuds from cvs, certainly.

man you guys take some nice photos. any suggestions or perhaps links to good photo taking practices? where the light source should be? how far to stand? a beginners guide to taking photographs if you will. 99% of the pictures i take are blurry and look like shit but randomly i come up with something that isnt totally embarrassing. would like to get better at it though. -
nah...in counter strike, i shall remain crappyjones forever. no phd will take the crappyjones out of me thanks all

dissertation got signed by my advisory committee not sure what to do or how to feel now. feel very happy but sad at the same time. happy because barring my own death or the death of everyone on my advisory committee i will have a phd at the end of the semester but sad because a long journey came to an end. romanticizing a math problem isnt something that a lot of people do but in more ways than one the little problem i had been working on for so long got me through a lot of crap, provided years of annoyance but every time i chipped away at it, it provided little shots of happiness and adrenaline edging me forward. it was a formidable enemy but a gentle friend all at the same time. fucked up my shoulder but all in all, a good but sad day. got 5 recommendation letters from the advisory committee for law school at the same time. really really hope law school can offer the same intellectual stimulation that math offered.

any suggestions for input tubes? i have a pair of hytron 5814A's, a mullard 12au7, and a pair of bugle boy 12au7s on the way. given that this amp has already sucked in close to $700 in tubes, wouldnt mind some medium priced options. total cost so far ~$1030 with no casework done

gamma 2 dac and western electric 421As are here. one 421A is in the amp. fuck me. the sound is simply glorious. never heard soundstage this wide with the other 6080s that i tried. however, lots of noise past the 12o clock mark on the volume pot. using the gamma 2 right now. noise wasnt there with the 6080. will try the other 421A to see if the noise persists. instruments are more detailed but the sound is a little dry overall (i think). too many things have changed however - dac, tube, cables etc. so dont know what is the culprit. very nice sounding amp nonetheless. a little remark on attenuation with the tube as well. hair trigger over the lowest volume gets it to regular volume. a tad more gets it comfortably loud.

happy birthday doc.

i thought it was 2 cops and a cat...?

those look pretty nice. not to shit on your new speakers but most (actually all) of the stuff that i have seen built by you has been far more impressive (woodwork wise). why not build something yourself? my apologies if it seems like im raining on the parade, but just seemed a little odd. kinda like nate asking someone else to cut holes in things...but then again, wtf do i know.

matched pair of these. gamma 2 dac built by misterx (big up to nebby for sending me the link to the sale ad. thanks meng) emotiva x series rca cables to go between the dac and the crack. 1 for myself and 1 for dads media pc.

hmm (just went back to the bom). would one need a preamp of sorts for volume control? or could a pot be added to the amp itself somewhere along the way? any way to use the bottlehead crack as preamp in case one is required? wondering if i could do without having to buy more gear.
-
are the through holes for the transformer/volume pot/etc a certain standard distance apart? i ask to see if those hand terminal blocks could be used (ones which get soldered on to the board and the wires get screwed into the block. after having to solder and desolder and solder and desolder and solder and desolder again and again while using the wrong fuse (needed to use slow blow in stead of the supplied fast blow with the crack amp...) i really missed having those screw on things. just a little though in case the bom is still fluid. would help us noobs a lot while troubleshooting. if it is more of a personal preference then i wouldnt mind being told what exactly the thing is called so i can start looking for it.

size queen nice to see the black on black. looks sexy. now try on the silver one and post pics

forgive the tape still havent had time to get wood glue yet >< but the amp is fully functional and sounds great. slight hiss only with the volume all the way up on the thinkpad. with the rca receiver and my pcdp dead dead quiet. before i put the speedball kit in, i took out the sprague caps and put in the stock ones. should have listened to colin =/ amp sounds waaaaaaaaaaaaaay better. was starting to think about selling it but all such thoughts have been banished. hell i dont even want to sell the 701s now midrange is quite good. pictures courtesy of one of the cooler office mates ive had in a while. he has one of those fancy canon eos cameras.

i dont even understand what that time cube guy was saying... -
for those of us who arent as technically savvy as others, are you suggesting that one tape down the pcb to the bottom of the chassis and drill a hole through the pcb and the bottom of the case OR that the pcb already has a hole and after taping the pcb down the to the bottom of the case, one drills through the case where ever a mounting hole is present on the pcb? my apologies if you meant something entirely different. obviously i misunderstood. in both events i would be rather scared of damaging the pcb. what are the chances that something like that would happen?
