Internet speeds - how much is truly needed?
crappyjones123 replied to recstar24's topic in Miscellaneous
^ not always the case. for our change in speed for the dsl account, the guy had to come to our community and manually change some jumper in the main fiber box outside. i dont know if that is dsl specific or just bellsouth being a pain in the ass. on a side note, i have a 100mbit line at school and a 3mbit line at home. for just browsing the internet, the 3mbit line is more than sufficient. this is also assuming you arent uploading a whole lot. most people start hitting their head against the wall when the find out that a 3mbit line is only the download speed. upload speeds are usually capped at 0.3mbit or lower. uploading pictures/biggish documents can be annoying on lower speed packages. youtube also runs just fine on our 3mbit line. the videos buffer just fine. -
never too early for pix.

but where are the pix??? another great meet im sure. wish i could attend.

dell lcd was purchased ~5 years ago. as you can see in the pictures, theres a darkish horizontal area that curves up a little to the right side of the panel. visible on white backgrounds but very very obvious on greys. its actually worse in person than it seems in the pictures. any thoughts? suggestions? my thinkpad backlight just died 20 minutes after i installed a replacement harddrive (the deathstar finally kicked the bucket). the laptop has been with my for the better part of 4 years now. just hate all this stuff happening to machines i have gotten very used to.

oh lordy. those are some mighty fine speakers you got there mr ryan. bet they sound phenomenal. i hope to be able to work my way up to them someday. congratulations on the purchase!

pulley ratchet arrangement leading to a suspended pair of speakers...thats sounds infinitely more fun than this silly ball bearing business. having the speakers suspended will also lead to being able to change the angle of inclination a lot easier and with smaller steps than perhaps with a ball bearing. i think jp might have created a whole new business opportunity by starting this thread...fishing line rolling "my fishing line gives tighter bass than yours!" imagine the fun that could be had with the average head fier!
-
jp how heavy are the speakers? i am assuming that the ball bearings on glass will have a single point of contact which would concentrate the weight on to one spot of the lens instead of distributing it over a surface. would make it easier to break. would make sense to do it with some kind of pliable balls but again, one ball might get squished more than the other depending on the column of weight above it. wouldnt have that problem with ball bearings. this is turning out to be a cool math problem
-
if the sandwich plates were flat then is there anything to stop the speaker from just rolling off on the ball bearings. i think the concavity holds the ball bearing in place not allowing it to move around. just my thoughts. wait, for some reason i forgot the whole o ring part. if the o ring is too tight, the bearing will ride the o ring and depending on how heavy the column of weight above any o ring, the bearing might go deeper in some o rings vs others. if the o ring diameter is too big, the bearing will have room to walk.

what aerius said. planet10-hifi makes phase plugs specifically for that application. gets rid of the shoutyness from the fostex 206e which is waaaaaaaay more honky in the higher registers than any lowther driver. wonder what could be done with a not so expensive woofer and a dx4 in the same cabinet with a crossover at say 400hz....decent bass + excellent mids. when i was messing around with the fonkens, i tried to get more bass quantity out of them but failed miserably. was expecting too much from a 4.5" driver. but the bass quality with a nice amp was rather satisfactory. that was with $400 in parts. with considerably more money and better/bigger drivers i am sure better slam could be achieved. i dont know if it would be fair to ask a desktop monitor to produce the same kind of bass that perhaps a dedicated 15" subwoofer could produce.
-
i suggested the lowthers purely for midrange, not for bass. seemed that that was more important. i cant find the plans anywhere but i have sent the gentlemen who had those speakers an email to see if he can direct me in the right direction. iirc, he had actually purchased them from some company in either north or south carolina. will post if i get a reply from him. when i heard those things, the bass wasnt all that impressive but the midrange was about as good as i had ever heard. he also had apogee calipers and those cool looking gallo speakers (reference 3 maybe, but i dont remember the model number). of the 3 rigs, the lowthers were quite a ways ahead in the midrange dept. non existent bass compared to the gallo speakers which had subwoofers in each cabinet.

afaik, lowther only manufactures drivers and one floorstander. so it would have to be a diy/commision job unless you are willing to pay a 3x markup which would land you outside your budget. i have seen 2 smaller designs used for desktop use. they are very deep though. imagine a horizontal transmission line. actually thats exactly what that is. will look for the designs in the evening. wasnt able to find them last night. for midrange i cant think of a better driver for desktop use other than maybe feastrex but those things are a lot more expensive. perhaps phy or some seas offering but those are more $$$ as well.
-
for that big of a budget, id like to throw in a vote for some nice lowther drivers (excellent midrange from what i have read and from the 2 pairs of pm6a's that i have heard) in a simple cabinet (driver would depend on the cabinet chosen). on paper they go that low but i dont know you will be able to get buttshaking bass out of them. sq wise i think they might be better than much prettier speakers with fancy crossovers and such things. also they are all at least 96db efficient so you could drive them quite easily with the amp that you have.

ron clarkes dallas 2s damnit stretch beat me to it. room belongs to some guy in scandinavia iirc. guy posted a picture in the diyaudio full range forum.

CANOR-AUDIO.COM : Headphone tube amplifier SH1 : Tube amplifier & high end audio found this while following random integrated amp links. any thoughts? construction looks clean. worth the $550 they charge for it?
