The Official Naming Convention of Menaces (Menacie?) The original will always be simply "The Menace". (approx 50lbs) The most recent incarnation is "The MenaceTC Lite". (approx 30lbs) The forthcoming stupidly expensive 307A-based nonsense is tentatively called "Colossus". Since the topology is so different I decided a while back to give it an entirely different name. I'm not sold on the current one, but until something better comes around it is what it is. Someone could, if so inclined, build a MenaceTC that would bear a strong similarity to the original and would be even heavier but that amp would look significantly different than the 307A amp. I also won't be able to share the schematic I'm using for the 307A amp further separating it from the original Menace concept. As for what it takes to be called Colossus, well here's the current pile o' parts.

  6. Pisser. If that doesn't do it she probably will need her computer and some time to bring it back.

  8. There were supposed to be two well equipped Blue Hawaii's (although neither technically an SE) at the NYC but sadly both builders failed to complete them in time. We'll get them next time.
  9. Not crazy, there's already a group of us working on it. Except for that whole battery powered bit, funk that.
  10. I use wall warts all the time. Of course I usually feed them through a regulated power supply but I guess my point is that wall warts are not inherently evil nor created equal.
  11. Doesn't seem horribly over-priced if it's actually built well. Not knowing how they go about developing the various output voltages it's kind of hard to say. An internal picture would be very interesting.
  12. Happy Birthday!
  13. $600 is going to be very hard to get anything worth buying not to mention anything that will run Photoshop. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, Dan was too cryptic in saying the same thing.

Sorry, but that's wildly inaccurate especially if you're talking Ebay pricing as we were for this meter. I paid less than $200 new for my 179, granted that's 5x the cost but as you describe in the rest of your review that $$ is definitely buying you something.
  15. How is ALO supposed to cram 19 strands of 14awg flesh-toned goodness into there?

FWIW I too preferred the HE5 and not by a small margin. The LCD-2 is not a headphone that I'd want to own, it's soundstage and presentation were just weird to my ears. Diffuse, unfocused and with some odd mid-range push on top of the fact that they were heavy and have quite possibly the largest pads known to man.
  17. That's not an entirely inaccurate statement. P.s. Mr. Toole has a box for you.
  18. I'm sure I've discussed this elsewhere but for the sake of beating down the JH13 hoards they are not for me for the following reason: situations where I would use IEMs do not lend themselves to critical listening, i.e. I'm using the isolation to block out extremely loud noises. situations where I would use IEMs are somewhat hazardous to their health making expensive IEMs a bad idea. $1100 for something that is exceptionally fit dependent does not sit well with me. I am simply not a fan of $1100 for things that in my opinion have ~25% resale value. In situations where I actually do listen critically I do not want or need isolation. Now, alll that said, I can certainly see why the represent a very good option for other people. If I commuted on a train, traveled frequently on a plane, or lived in an environment where closed cans where a benefit it would be a pretty easy decision.
  19. I also listened to the 13's today and reaffirmed my belief that while wonderful they are not something that I need or want to own. If I traveled like Jeff it'd be a no brainer but I don't have the lifestyle to justify something like this.

Stretch, You were missed. Just made it home, the drive both ways was through some pretty shitty rain but the event made it worth while. Had a good time, did way more listening than usual, and managed to buy some parts at the auction that I have no earthly use for. Yet. Highlights: 1. Seeing Dinny's beta22 again. F I love that amp. 2. Seeing just how small Colin's spud amp is and hearing just how good it is. It's absurd on both counts. 3. Seeing Jeff, Ari, Colin, Dinny, Kerry, Jimmy, Wayne, Arron and a whole slew of others and just catching up for a bit. And of course meeting a few new folks (Judd?). But I'm officially wrecked after a 16hr day (8 of which was in the car) so I'm saving more impressions for tomorrow.
  21. The way I configged it I came up with a pretty decent system for ~$488. Not the best but way cheaper than the comparable mini.
