  1. It's certainly been done. But yes, you are correct in assuming that the casework is probably the most challenging bit, especially if overall size has to be limited. Some parts of the Alien DAC can also be tricky if you are not all that familiar with SMD soldering.
  2. I watched the first half, I'm really enjoying it. But I'm exhausted and want to enjoy the second half rather than half sleep through it so it'll have to wait for another night.

  4. Thanks, I'd have to double check since I didn't buy the chassis (it came with the parts that I bought) but I'd guess it's 17x12x2. The height is going to be tight and clearly real estate is at a premium. The Electraprint iron isn't exactly small though. I'm pretty sure that the grommet is part number 9311K139 and yes they are from McMaster Carr. If you search for Vibration Control Grommet you'll find a range of sizes and styles. I picked these on a recommendation from a friend who had used them in several projects. One of these days I'll get back to chassis fab, but runny noses have been hurting my efficiency. And of course, welcome to Head-case. There's a few other NH/New England folks around here although the DIY contingent is a little on the light side.
  5. Pete, Be very careful selecting a case with very tight dimensions, especially from Hammond's line of small steel enclosures. I used one of the 1415 series of steel project boxes to house a transformer once and had to do a lot of "customization" to get it to fit because of the rather large lip that these cases have. The 1415C at 6 x 5 x 4H might work for you. That said, one of those with a little Mu Metal took care of all of the noise issues I was having with the first beta22 that I built so it does work. Nate

    Custom IEM's

I disagree, cheap POS in line attenuators can do a lot more to screw up a signal then a pair of well matched high quality resistors.
  7. I'm sure it's about as badass as that Husky has ever managed to look.
  8. The Buffalo gets a lot of good press, haven't heard mine yet. And before it the Opus was pretty well thought of although I'm only reporting what I've heard here. You might search the site and find out who owns or has owned one and ask them directly.

    Wet Shaving

I just can't imagine dedicating that much thought or effort to shaving. Of course I only shave once a week so...

  13. Panels are at the fabricator, not much to be done on the beta till they return next week.
  14. I took the early shift, 9 to 1. Was back up at 5am for a feeding so I managed about 4hrs of half-decent sleep.

  16. Hammond has a pretty extensive line. What size do you need? Hard to suggest a chassis without knowing if you need 2" x 2" or 24" x 24".
  17. Wait, was he supposed to pay me for that stuff?
  18. If you attended the meet, did you get to keep what you picked?
  19. I think that the boutique kitchen, or at least being able to convince homeowner's that they are worth 50k is something we might never see come back. Most of the people putting in new kitchens were financing them through second mortgages which I also think are going to become few and far between. And I'll never understand the obsession with granite counter tops, I'm not a fan at all.
  20. I didn't see that it was variable at all, 12 steps is probably ok as long as you can change it on the fly and don't have to pop a cover and swap belts or some such nonsense.
  21. Rather than fight with chassis choices looking for something to provide the shielding I'd just order a potted and shielded transformer. Other solutions have a way of appearing kludgey without a lot of careful planning.
  22. As far as I know they don't exist.

  24. My only thoughts are that it would be nice to have a worklight on the table. My Delta has one and it's immensely helpful. Oh wait, I just caught that it isn't variable speed. That would be a deal breaker for me. I've got a Delta DP-350.
