I'm glad I got out when I did

Dog is finally getting some nicer looking digs for the family room and his crate will retire to the attic.

When's the move?

Olivier Cave (Pianist) playing Scarlatti and others at the Phillips Collection (his north american debut). Really excellent acoustics in that small chamber music hall. I went because a friend of the family knows the guy but I'm really glad I went because it was amazing. He is a wonderful pianist. Up there with Evgeny Kissin for me though that could just have been the intimacy coloring my impression. Ordered his CD (import=$$) and we'll see if the impression stays.

I'd be very surprised if the insanity defense succeeds but who knows. Maybe greed is a "syndrome". That would make a lot of Wall St. a looney bin which sort of fits.

damn this thread and all of you that keep on bumping it....

^ That is flat out amazing.

My condolences KD. Hope everything goes smoothly etc.

Did the body guard deck you when you made advances to his client?

Two things that I've noticed since the upgrade (sorry if both have been mentioned) When I click on the little arrow in quotes to get linked to the quote firefox brings up the little arrow in a new tab as well as following the link. I haven't figured out how to turn this off. It appears to be due to the arrows being slightly resized in the quote mechanism because when you mouse-over the arrow it says "click to enlarge" Also in the mobile version when I click "last page" it takes me to the first page of a thread.

Vicki, I am Sorry to hear about Ivan.

I spent most of the day buried under work and comparisons between numerical and experimental results that just didn't make sense. Figured out that the lab that did the experimental work screwed up yet again in their analysis. Fuck they are useless. Also the co-worker (and now member of my staff) that was supposed to do the analysis is useless too. Frustrating day overall. Though I'm off to an awesome dinner in about 45 min.

Radiohead - The Bends To lazy to go and find the art....

Man I miss putting audio gear up in this thread. Came on a good chunk of change recently but I'm doing boring things with it like putting extra payments to mortgages and a larger donation to Haiti. I still want the naim dac. Anyone hear that yet?

Talked my boss into letting me work from home a day (possibly more?) a week for the next few months. Downside being that I will have to work my ass off for the next few months.

Cool Colin! Me: Went to see Shen Yun Chinese dancing this past Saturday. Very enjoyable except for the Falun Gong/Falun Dafa propaganda included. Man Chinese dance involves a lot of acrobatics.

Jealous. KGSS+4070 made me happy. I wonder if I'll ever be able to make that my desktop rig.

I'm excited about it. We'll see how cool it ends up being. We're going to watch parts of Stages 2 & 3. We had ticket refunds that we needed to use up from about a year ago when I had to cancel a trip due to a death in the family. United claims that I will be refunded the change fee ($150/ticket wtf??) once I submit the proper request. We shall see if that's true. If it is it will be good.

Two tickets to SFO in May for Bay to Breakers (running race) and Tour of California (bike race). Should be a fun time.

I guess I came off a bit strong (I have a tendency). I'm not actually saying what he's doing is snake oil. If it is the dither thing I'm talking about then it is psychoacoustics which is definitely not snake oil, just not my thing. As far as optimizing a system for complex signal vs a measured signal as long as the system is linear there is absolutely no difference. The non-linearities are what JA is essentially measuring so bad measurements that people mention above point to dithering/noise shaping because nonlinearity will not give a wide banded noise floor on a single input frequency. To be honest the dithered signal may actually sound better, it's reasonably common trick in mastering to add some noise floor to music, apparently it makes it sound more "real". Filburt and I have had several discussions about testing for phase performance and/or transient intermodulation distortion which are interesting and should capture sound-staging and complex non-linear effects from real music. On another note I think the quote in your sig. is rather out of context: "Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand." Tells a very different more Einstein consistent story. I was wondering after reading your replies so I went and looked it up.

Ah one of the we know what you want, never mind being true to the original signal we'll do some wild bullshit with dithering and noise floor and make it sound moar better. Also sounds like they don't do brickwall filtering so they probably do the minmum phase filter to get rid of pre-ring in the digital signal. That's why I like technically accurate it's so much easier to establish than this mumbo-jumbo. QFT. This is a hobby with the Blackbody.

For those of us to lazy to buy a copy and to impatient to wait what's the response in a nutshell? I'm guessing it's on the lines of "you guys don't know how to measure stuff".

Fought with my fucking drobo. I usually leave my computer asleep and just wake it up when I want to do something. So I wake it up and starte Windows Media Player (don't start) to sync some new cd's to my media player and the fucking drobo doesn't wake up and refuses to respond and shows that the directories are empty. WMP then starts removing the "lost" media and all hell breaks loose, luckily I was looking at the screen and had not walked off. I then try and wake up drobo by unplugging the USB then it comes back asking to be formatted (WTF!!!!) anyway after powering both computer and drobo down entirely everything is back and no data loss. This fucking drobo gives me a heart attack every couple months.
