  1. HeadAmp KGSS & Stax SR-507 (both new) I just realized that if I hadn't got these along with my recent Nikon D7000 and Lumix LX5, would be able to just afford an SR-009 in the group buy.
  2. It turns out I lack sufficient funds at the moment to be in on a group buy, ah well. Well unless I decide to sell my BHSE (or potentially a few other items) before the order-in, not sure how likely that is though.
  3. I had to check to see if I was still on Head-Case and not Head-Fi.
  4. I'm scrambling to find dough to be in for a group buy.
  5. CanJam@RMAF '11. Be there. You like speakers too, right?
  6. I charge $100/idea. If you want free ideas go somewhere else.
  7. Sure, no prob Mikey. And for something from a different genre today: Zero One - Ozone (electronica). Cool stuff so far.
  8. Looks cool, but still no release date or price. Those are need-to-know pieces of info!
  9. The latest addition to my arsenal of Nikon DSLRs - the D7000 - to make it a trifecta. Pic taken with the Lumix LX5, which I also picked up. (Somehow I overlooked the fact it has a lens cap, which will probably get annoying. But oh well.) Now to get a new medium-range zoom lens and a polarizing filter....
  10. Sierra Hull - Daybreak. Found out about her while looking up Alison Krauss & Union Station's upcoming new album (Paper Airplane, 4/12!) and she has a similar type of low-key, pure-sounding voice (and is also bluegrass). Good stuff.
  11. Deepak - are you saying none of the albums are really worth buying as they're all not recorded very well? I was thinking about buying 2 of them but if the recording quality is sub-par....
  12. ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead - Tao of the Dead
  13. Thanks guys, already putting it to good use. The LCD-2 sounds really good on it.
  14. I finally got around to having the amp fixed and got it back yesterday. Set it up and it works great. Glad to have a working B22 now. According to the person who fixed the amp, the 4 output MOSFETs in the right-channel amp board were blown so they were all replaced. Not going to identify who fixed the amp as he requested anonymity. Big thanks to him though.
  15. Good point, and one I hadn't considered before. Makes a lot of sense to retain RAW files for future processing. I can see the advantages of shooting RAW on a P&S then. Should probably start shooting in RAW myself, now that I actually have LR3.
  16. Justin/MPI: I retract part of my previous post in the comparison of Hahn to Fischer. Did a formal listening comparison of specific movements on the two CDs and I actually found that Hahn played faster than Fischer, not the other way around. Clearly shouldn't have relied on memory for that, my bad. Hahn's speed on the Bach Double is insanely fast as you mentioned; Fischer is only moderately fast and keeps a sane tempo. Hahn's spontaneously varying tempo in general is a noticeable contrast against Fischer's slightly-slower, constant tempo. As far as the bow-stroke style, Hahn's is what I'd call wild. She really presses into the strings more too for more volume and clearly has no subtlety when it comes to dynamics, it's mostly just loud and louder with her. Fischer has more of that détaché sound and her volume range is more quiet to moderate which mixes her sound in with the orchestra better (Hahn really sticks out against the orchestra). Not really up on my terminology anymore, forgot about détaché earlier. It's been like 11 years since I last had violin lessons.
  17. Since you're a violinist, I'll be more specific - Hahn sounds like she's adding short trills in spots that I haven't heard on Fischer's recording (and seems to like trilling too, because there are a lot), and adding "interval" notes when doing things like crossing strings or playing 3 quick notes in the time span of 2 notes. So just minor flourishes, which I guess is typical for professional musicians. To expand on the stylistic differences between Hahn & Fischer, and now that I'm re-listening with the OII/BHSE, it's easier to hear a very legato (but quick) type of bowing style from Hahn, and clearly she likes using up entire up & down bow movements from tip to frog. Fischer has shorter bow movements which helps her achieve a faster tempo - Fischer definitely plays faster than Hahn on the faster pieces. Hahn also seems to prefer keeping her bow on the string whenever possible and doesn't lift it very much, while Fischer definitely takes her bow off the string more. Hahn adds a lot of vibrato too, a lot more than Fischer (who seems averse to it). Overall, seems like Hahn is slightly more laidback/relaxed and Fischer more intense/insistent. Hahn's violin also sounds weird, almost like it's cold and isn't at room temperature. Haven't heard of Rachel Podger (let alone any of her recordings), will probably check her out eventually.
  18. Hilary Hahn - Bach Concertos. After listening to Julia Fischer's equivalently-titled CD for so long this is something definitely different, not sure yet if that's a good or bad thing. The thing I've noticed the most so far is that Hahn has a very wide & loose bowing movement on the violin and she seems to really like spontaneously slowing & accelerating the tempo (and injecting extra notes for flair too). Fischer, on the other hand, is a lot more calculating and precise, which IMO suits Bach more. Fischer's CD also might have better recording quality, don't know for sure yet though. The Adagio from the Concerto in E major (BWV 1042) doesn't hold a candle to Fischer's performance though, man the Fischer one just blows me away every time!
  19. If you're referring to power-on delay, every P&S has a short delay there, about 1-2 secs. Aside from that I'm not the right person to ask - I never used auto with the S90 and always shot full manual. It also had about maybe a half-sec delay between shutter releases. Not sure why you'd be concerned about speed for a P&S camera anyway - no model will really be very fast. Well probably none of the inexpensive models anyway. Again, I'm not really a good person to ask about this - I'm not a P&S person and prefer using DSLRs. I'd imagine the latest round of P&S cameras to be fast enough for most people, so there shouldn't be anything to worry about. If you really need fast speed (for power-on, focus, and changing of settings) then just get a DSLR.
  20. I'm definitely out on this now. Sorry Brent, maybe next year. Definitely want to meet the local HC-ers but it'll have to be some other time.
  21. 1) I'm used to handling my DSLRs so using any P&S camera is significantly slower in comparison. The inherent slow-down to a P&S is tolerable for me though - but Canon's software-based menu slowed me down more than the camera's focusing speed (as changing ISO, aperture, shutter speed, & focal length are actions that I typically do a lot of, and each requires menu access - which obviously can't be done nearly as quickly as on a DSLR). 2) Never used the S90 much and I'm not really a critic on image quality either, so can't really speak for that. Seemed ok to me when I used it for the occasional pics of audio gear. 3) Never took enough pics at a time to drain the battery, can't speak for that either. 4) All of the pics that I've ever posted on HC or HF have been from JPG (have never shot in RAW), so I guess you can judge for yourself from my pics. I know Peter/Iron_Dreamer shoots in RAW though. Also I don't see why anyone would actually bother to use RAW on a P&S - makes a lot more sense to use RAW on DSLRs. 5) Never used the S90 to record video. Converting video formats shouldn't be hard to do though - and I'd imagine that to be more easily done on the Mac platform anyway (as opposed to Windows, which I use).
  22. Whoa that pic is fascinating, creepy, & sad all at the same time, kudos! You know what sort of bird is the one that got killed? The Lumix LX5 is a fair bit bigger than the S95, if that matters - can compare the dimensions on the mfgrs' respective Web sites. I had the S90 (same size as the S95) and one reason why I sold it was because it was too small - so if size is a primary factor, you should get the S95.

  24. The company I work at just moved this past week to a new location (due to expansion) and I wanted to share pics of the new digs. Because it's an awesome upgrade from where we were previously in almost every way - an 11-floor building and the company takes up 4 of them, and there's an even better view of the mountains now. I'm on the 7th floor and love the view. (click any for larger) Pics of the previous site - we took up the entire building in pic 1, 1 floor of the other adjoining building, and 1 floor of another unpictured building View of the mountains at the previous site from a 3rd floor conference room New building - 8th floor conference room area Facing east from the 8th floor conference room Wall pattern in a hallway on the 8th floor 8th floor lounge area 5th floor cafeteria life-size Elvis replica, the company mascot
