What did you do today?
Thanks, Anurag. It feels wonderful to be through it. What I actually finished was the post-defense edits, so it's ready for publication today. Of course, even if it wasn't I'm the sole copyright holder, so I could send it to whomever I so chose. I'd be happy to send it over your way. You could count yourself in the esteemed company of myself, my wife, and my defense team as one of the <10 people who will ever read it (God willing.)

The Official Head-Case Photography Thread.
My mount plate is very steady. It has no problem holding my D90 and a heavy lens.

Glad you enjoyed it.

The only decent smallish tripod is the gorillapod, though be warned that it works better wrapped around something than it does with the legs bent into a tripod shape. Nonetheless, should work well for the S95.

What are you EATING right now?
I made labor "inequal distribution of labor breakfast burritos". Yesterday I rendered lard for the tortilla dough, and today I realized I was out of potatoes so I cooked up some frozen Ore-Ida tater tots and threw them in. Turned out delicious. Not sourdough waffle delicious, but better than the construction workers across the street can buy out of their roach coach.

That's not a bad shot, CJ. Usually, when you take a high ISO long exposure shot like that, you get a lot of noise. I thought you had some fringing on a part of the tube, but it looks like it's a green reflection. You're either forcing the ISO down, or the S95 is a very good camera. probably some of both.

Noise canceling headphones for portable DVD player
A used pair of quietcomforts would seem to fit the bill, no? Perhaps they're not "respectable", but they are circumaural and comfortable. I wonder if their noise cancelling algorithm would be effective on the interstate, though, as they seem to be tuned for jet engines. Honestly, aside from the Bose the only noise cancelling headphones I can think of are the Audio Technicas, and I've not heard them.

I don't think she's 100% human. She's a super hot something else, which must be where the weirdness comes from.

Robot vacuum cleaner, or not?
I have a decent roomba, reasonably new, and love it. I bought it to help kickstart a wootoff, and to give to my wife. The trick is to use it frequently, like every single day. Give the place a really thorough clean, then schedule it to run every day and it will happily maintain that level of clean. Just empty it out every night. You do have to keep stuff off the floor, of course, but that's not too bad. You end up spending 5-10 minutes a day, and having a clean place all the time. If you're observant of routine, I'd say go for it.

Advice on which in-ear monitors to choose
Get the JH5s, even though the isolation is so so. Drums, as you may have heard, are LOUD. Wear the JH5 and put some shooting earmuffs on over them if you're tracking non-electric drums. For the electric kit, the isolation blocks out the thudding sound well enough (tested today at GC with my JH13). They do get a little slippery when you sweat, however.

The Headcase Stax thread
The HE-60 is also, without a doubt, the most comfortable headphone ever conceived. That has to count for something.

Top Gear
I'm willing to give the US iteration time to develop (though I doubt their network will be so lenient). I just finished watching the first season of "new" Top Gear (i.e. season 1 after the relaunch before they brought in James May) and it was really not so good. Transitions were screwy, the audience didn't have it figured out, and there were whole minutes eaten up by a portly chap explaining which cars were having a good sale at the moment. Point being, as Dan said, chemistry takes time to develop. May, Hammond and Clarkson can live in the bush together at this point, if the U.S. show is to ever develop that, people need to give it some room.
