November 16, 200718 yr Coming up on the one-week anniversary of the greatest crash since '29 , it seems that many might enjoy a little speculation on long long the rebuilding process might take. Notice the question pertains to when the site might be working again, as normal or prior to the crash (if possible). I'm really not quite sure myself. I was surprised that problems have persisted as long as the have, until I read about the nitty-gritty going on in serverland, which made me understand the magnitude of the problem.
November 16, 200718 yr I'd say at least another week to pull some kind of forensic miracle to recover and rebuild the most current database. If we go back to 2006, Head-Fi will be back up by Sunday night.
November 16, 200718 yr I'm going with 3-5 days. But honestly I'm shocked it has been down as long as it has. I thought for sure it would be up Monday.
November 16, 200718 yr I'd say 10 days to a month, unless, of course, they rewind to sometime in 2006.
November 16, 200718 yr I simply don't see how they can practically implement the rewind. So my vote is that they're going to realize this and fight as long and hard as possible to recover what they can or else it's reboot time and we all start at zero again.
November 16, 200718 yr I say just turn back the clock to 2006 and get it over with...and bring back the banned individuals.
November 16, 200718 yr it would be stupid to rush the old 06 site out now, i say take the time and do it right... as long as its by saturday night so i can get some damn impressions!...
November 16, 200718 yr Why not start a blank head-fi right now, over again, and then add that to whatever version they'll have up later?
November 16, 200718 yr Define "normally". If by normally you mean one sneeze away from going tits up, they should be able to get that done within a week. If you mean getting it to run right, and doing it properly, the answer is never.
November 16, 200718 yr I'm assuming "normally" means recovering all data and preventing this sort of snafu from happening again so I voted "never".
November 17, 200718 yr Brand new forum. Let pre-07 be archived. Let's what we did when a large forum (200k+ members) crashed back in 99'.
November 17, 200718 yr This and many similar incidents with other forums highlight just how bad the existing model is - the forum maintainer effectively 'owns' the entire database and if they fuck up or lose interest it's gone forever. I would much prefer a distributed system, not unlike USENET + some aggregation sites similar to Google news.
November 17, 200718 yr I've been debating whether or not i should post this, figured why the hell not. How fucked is jude. Real mother fucking fucked. His real business where he makes all of his real money was also tied into that one box, and all of his corporate customers in particular for example http://www.whatuseek.com http://www.changealarm.com http://www.sitelevel.com are also down. This is not just a head-fi thing, its jude's core business. If he does not get that raid set back up, he might as well plan on flipping burgers at McDonalds for the rest of his life.
November 17, 200718 yr Dvse, but with a system like that, he wouldn't be able to slap people with the censor and ban sticks when they say something unfriendly to Head-Fi or its sponsors.
November 17, 200718 yr Our first such outage in almost 10 years in business, we apologize for the inconvenience. We are at the datacenter now, performing repairs and maintenance, and expect to have service restored very soon.
November 17, 200718 yr Our first such outage in almost 10 years in business, we apologize for the inconvenience. We are at the datacenter now, performing repairs and maintenance, and expect to have service restored very soon. Do you have an ETA? At what point will it be back up? Current as it was before crashing, or 2006?
November 17, 200718 yr Nick, I highly doubt Jude is calling Kevin right now to give him the scoop. EDIT: Let me rephrase that. There is no way in hell Jude would be telling Kevin anything about this right now. If Kevin has other sources, that's a different matter.
November 17, 200718 yr Nick, I highly doubt Jude is calling Kevin right now to give him the scoop. I just realized he just quoted from one of Jude's other websites...my bad. i'm still mad that you critizied my taste in music...you are officially *shunned*
November 17, 200718 yr Dvse, but with a system like that, he wouldn't be able to slap people with the censor and ban sticks when they say something unfriendly to Head-Fi or its sponsors. And we need the middleman why? It's possible to have moderated (or even self moderated) subforums if one so wishes. I would not be surprised if one of the large search companies does something similar one day.
November 17, 200718 yr I just realized he just quoted from one of Jude's other websites...my bad. i'm still mad that you critizied my taste in music...you are officially *shunned* You're so banned.
November 17, 200718 yr Which is better? A) To be shunned by Nick To be banned by Grawk Hmmm. *un-shunned* To be shunned by Nick *re-shunned*
November 17, 200718 yr Nick, I highly doubt Jude is calling Kevin right now to give him the scoop. EDIT: Let me rephrase that. There is no way in hell Jude would be telling Kevin anything about this right now. If Kevin has other sources, that's a different matter. If i get another email or phone call from jude, hell will certainly have frozen over. I expect that when head-fi comes back i will be banned forever, even though it is specifically against judes policy which states that what happens outside of head-fi is none of his business.
November 17, 200718 yr Well I know first hand that he doesn't believe in that policy, considering in the past he's used information on other websites to send me some very nasty messages threatening to ban me.
