Coming up on the one-week anniversary of the greatest crash since '29 , it seems that many might enjoy a little speculation on long long the rebuilding process might take. Notice the question pertains to when the site might be working again, as normal or prior to the crash (if possible).

I'm really not quite sure myself. I was surprised that problems have persisted as long as the have, until I read about the nitty-gritty going on in serverland, which made me understand the magnitude of the problem.

I'd say at least another week to pull some kind of forensic miracle to recover and rebuild the most current database.

If we go back to 2006, Head-Fi will be back up by Sunday night.

I'm going with 3-5 days. But honestly I'm shocked it has been down as long as it has. I thought for sure it would be up Monday.

I'd say 10 days to a month, unless, of course, they rewind to sometime in 2006.

I simply don't see how they can practically implement the rewind. So my vote is that they're going to realize this and fight as long and hard as possible to recover what they can or else it's reboot time and we all start at zero again.

I say just turn back the clock to 2006 and get it over with...and bring back the banned individuals.

Why not start a blank head-fi right now, over again, and then add that to whatever version they'll have up later?

Define "normally". If by normally you mean one sneeze away from going tits up, they should be able to get that done within a week. If you mean getting it to run right, and doing it properly, the answer is never.

I'm assuming "normally" means recovering all data and preventing this sort of snafu from happening again so I voted "never".

Let's what we did when a large forum (200k+ members) crashed back in 99'.

This and many similar incidents with other forums highlight just how bad the existing model is - the forum maintainer effectively 'owns' the entire database and if they fuck up or lose interest it's gone forever.

I would much prefer a distributed system, not unlike USENET + some aggregation sites similar to Google news.

And we need the middleman why? It's possible to have moderated (or even self moderated) subforums if one so wishes. I would not be surprised if one of the large search companies does something similar one day.

I expect that when head-fi comes back i will be banned forever, even though it is specifically

against judes policy which states that what happens outside of head-fi is none of his business.

Well I know first hand that he doesn't believe in that policy, considering in the past he's used information on other websites to send me some very nasty messages threatening to ban me.
