May 31, 200818 yr Do you guys still find bargains on used music? After spending a while in NYC and Boston it seems most places priced the good stuff at Ebay or higher prices. And the local stores in my area now basically stock crap that has a nice fine line of dust on it. I think I'm going to all the wrong places
May 31, 200818 yr I think Ebay and Audiogon have the best selection. I can indeed find local deals at Waterloo and Half Price Books, but you gotta get lucky. It's fun, but sometimes you want something specific and in this case either record mailing lists or Ebay is the way to go.
May 31, 200818 yr I used to go to a local place called CD Warehouse, but they have really been struggling since the takeoff of MP3. I haven't been in at least a year, and before that, it was once every 6 months or so. Every time I came back, I expected the store to be out of business, and was pleasantly surprised to find it there. But their selection was too stagnant. They started selling videogames and movies to help stay afloat, and as a result their CD selection suffered further. I just use Amazon Marketplace now, for the most part.
May 31, 200818 yr You need to come to Montreal. In a radius of a 10 minutes walk starting at Metro Mont-Royal, there are about 7-8 shops with an excellent selection of CDs and a decent selection of vinyls. Usually, I make myself a list of 10 albums that I'm looking for and end up finding 3 or 4 everytime. I have only around 400 CDs though so there's still a lot of stuff to explore.
May 31, 200818 yr Author You need to come to Montreal. I do, I was 20 last time I was in Montreal...if you catch my drift Montreal has an awesome music scene too.
May 31, 200818 yr I do, I was 20 last time I was in Montreal...if you catch my drift lol, I read that two ways, both of which are funny
May 31, 200818 yr Well THC would be involved in one, financial state in the other. Yeah, THC is pretty easy to find up here. It's been a while since I rolled one with my friends though... since I started university, beer pretty much replaced weed.
May 31, 200818 yr All the time at the Princeton Record Exchange. The other day I got Screamadelica, OK Computer, Mingus at Carnegie Hall, and the DANCE remix with Mos Def and Spank Rock for 14 bucks total.
May 31, 200818 yr I only buy used classical. There's plenty of good stuff. Just bought a Rzewski disc for $7 and am about to sell it for $100. You can find some pretty valuable stuff shopping used.
June 1, 200818 yr Well THC would be involved in one, financial state in the other. Well THC is better than STD for sure.
June 1, 200818 yr Hoffman marketplace. I couldn't even find the marketplace... then I read the FAQs. 50 posts for access. I have had a login there for some time, but have never posted.
June 1, 200818 yr I joined SH about a year ago after lurking for a while, but have only 11 posts I'm in the same situation. These guys know a lot more stuff than me about recording and mastering and I never feel like I can contribute with something informative that hasn't already been said.
June 1, 200818 yr Yeah. Though IMO, some of the guys there are pretty much just there to kiss SH's ass. There's not really a whole lot of objective opinions, only biased ones. And I'm talking about the music section, not the audio gear!
June 1, 200818 yr And I'm talking about the music section, not the audio gear! I think SH uses a pair of ALO-recabled K701. His speaker setup is pretty godly though.
June 1, 200818 yr I think SH uses a pair of ALO-recabled K701. His speaker setup is pretty godly though. He knows his stuff, I'm sure, but I think people over there forget that things like favorite albums are subjective; they act as if there are wrong answers.
June 1, 200818 yr That's true, most of the discussions in the music section are classic-rock oriented, which matches SH tastes. They also tend to overemphasize the importance of mastering sometimes when talking of night & day day differences, but we kinda do the same thing with headphones here and even more on H-F.
June 1, 200818 yr He knows his stuff, I'm sure, but I think people over there forget that things like favorite albums are subjective; they act as if there are wrong answers. "I'm not a huge fan of The Beatles." "ROFRRFFF YES YOU ARE DUMBASS"
June 2, 200818 yr He knows his stuff, I'm sure, but I think people over there forget that things like favorite albums are subjective; they act as if there are wrong answers. That's actually very well said, and much more diplomatically than I would have.
June 6, 200818 yr maybe the south florida crew can let me in on the used CD shops, i dunno any really...since the age of digital i think the used CD shop is going the way of the doh doh bird (bad spelling)
