July 20Jul 20 comment_970939 A few years back I discovered a newish country singer named Charlie Crocket. I've become a big fan, and today I went to see him play at Stern Grove Festival in San Francisco. It's an outdoor, kind of natural amphitheater. Nicki Bluhm opened for him and both artists were great. It was a long day but well worth it! Report

July 25Jul 25 comment_971040 @swt61 - very cool that you got to see Charlie. He came through H-town with Leon Bridges and unfortunately we were traveling so I missed that opportunity.I look forward to getting to enjoy him live one of these years...HS Report

July 28Jul 28 comment_971089 Visited the Lowell [MA] Folk Festival this weekend. Good food, good music, and fun to people-watch. Caught some Vocal Harmony group, Bluegrass/string, Zydeco, Haitian drummers & dancers, and - my favorite - some Tuvan musicians doing throat-singing.In the last pic, the two young ladies in front of me were loving the Tuvan singing, they kept smiling and looking at each other, I could see one mouth "Wow" several times. August 5Aug 5 comment_971229 DakhaBrakha....holy shitballs were they great! Highest recommendation!Great musicianship, and a massive connection with the audience (they played a small space in Portsmouth NH, they've played here before and a good chunk of the audience had seen them before).I didn't know they did this, but they auctioned off two paintings (and a pair of drumsticks) to benefit Ukraine. I won one of the paintings, and got backstage for a pic with the band and to tell them of my partial Ukrainian heritage!A wonderful night, filled my heart! Report

August 22Aug 22 comment_971521 Saw Kaki King last night, small venue in Southern Maine about 1.5 miles from my condo. She is so good! I described it on FB as feeling like being by a lake with gentle waves lapping onto the shore - at least her mellower songs. Then she would break out into her frenetic playing with body hits for rhythm, and fast finger moving and fret-playing.She even got pretty talkative with the audience. I guess it was her 3rd time playing the place; maybe 50 people there, but they were true fans. Edited August 22Aug 22 by skullguise Report
August 22Aug 22 comment_971522 I love seeing Kaki King play. I've seen her in smallish places but not in front of only 50 people! In SF she draws much bigger. She's most often been quite chatty at shows I've seen. Report
