  1. So a friend of mine has been bugging me to transfer some cassette tapes. I am always willing to help out but the problem holding me back was that I didn't have a cassette tape player. Now, as far back as I can remember (1985), my father hated cassette tapes. Almost everyone I knew growing up didn't like them because 1) they jammed, 2) they didn't sound as good as the LP and 3) the art was crap. I guess I grew up with this bias (PUN!). Anyway, I grew up dubbing some stuff to cassette on my tape deck at home. It was a Sony and I believe it cost my parents all of $20.00 or so. I was never crazy about the sound but it was all I had. So I grew up, saved some money and f…

Here's a short Sterephile review of Newmans newest. One of the most fun purchases I'm made recently. Course for a couple months recently I was listening almost exclusively to Randy, so maybe I'm a bit biased there.

The whole Hoffman/Gray Blue Note remasters and all of that stuff is great, but 45 bucks for one album is just too much to spend on an album unless I'm absolutely sure it has unsurpassed sound quality. What are the definite must haves in both music in sound quality? There are just too many times where I've read about some expensive new LP version of something that doesn't actually give any improvement, or is worse than the original.

So I've been running on the treadmill lately, and I am curious as to what other people listen to when they want to go for that extra mile. I tend to listen to the following: 1) LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver 2) Girl Talk - Feed the Animal 3) Rage Against the Machine - self titled 4) Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation 5) Metallica - Kill 'Em All 6) Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury 7) Weezer - Blue Album

  13. As I was casually listening to some music tonight, my choice of CD brought a rush of memory back to me that inspired me to ask this question. What is the most memorable, striking moment you've had while at a concert, seeing a live performance? For me it was at an outdoor theater that no longer exists - Poplar Creek in the NW Chicago burbs. We had gone to see King Crimson there on the tour they did supporting the Beat album. But there were mega intense thunderstorms that day and the show was rained out. I had been a Crimso fan since the early '70's but had never seen them. I was heartbroken. Flash ahead a couple of years. Three of a Perfect Pair is out. Crimso is tou…

  15. Started by LFF,

A friend of mine recently gave me some LP's to transfer for him that he found at his father's house. The LP's are all beat to crap, some containing some nice rat poo and others containing mold spores. All of them are in terrible condition but workable none the less. One of those LP's just happens to be an original six-eye red and black mono pressing of Dave Brubeck's Time Out. I saw it and was shocked that it was so beaten up. Someone must have listened to this A LOT. I cleaned it 3 times and put it on. WOW! I have never heard the mono version and I have a custom stereo version but even in this crappy condition the mono beats out every other version I have hear…

  16. So I've been thinking a lot about how much music you folks have exposed to me and how grateful I am for that. However, it can be a bit daunting to look through the WAYLTN thread for genre specific stuff. So I thought, how about separate threads devoted to essential albums. By essential, I don't necessarily mean your favorites, but those albums you feel all "insert genre here" lovers should know. Let's say, one album per post; say a little something about it too. I'll start off: Sunday at the Village Vanguard-Bill Evans Trio I know, pretty obvious, but if you haven't heard it, you need to. These guys practically defined what it meant to be a trio. The inter…

  18. I recently picked up couple albums from Johnny Cash's American Recording series (specifically, III and IV). I was excited about it as I've been meaning to get them for a while. To my dissapointment, both albums sounded terrible, sounding really "hot" at many places with distortions. My questions is, are there good versions of the American Recording series? I really want to listen to them, but I just can't get over the distortions.

How does the SQ and overall quality of the DCC Gold series compare to Mobile Fidelity? Does Steve Hoffman oversee the DCC line? I just found a new copy of Jackson Browne's "Late for the Sky" for $100 when the used were going for as much as $200. I don't think I've paid more than $25 for one cd in my life but to inaugurate my new Capitole this might be the CD I would pay such a price if...that sound is really that significant a difference? What's the general comparison between the two premium companies? Between a standard rebook and these gold standards? And as anyone heard or do you have "Late for the Sky?"

I'd been meaning to start this thread here, and then I saw someone had created on over there. So that was enough to get me to put some thoughts down on my favorite releases of 2008, which has gotten off to a great start with some fantastic albums... Kira Lynn Cain - The Ideal Hunter I'll quote a review I read elsewhere, which sums things up much better than I ever could... Definitely a great album worth some attention. Draconian - Turning Season Within Another strong outing from one of my favorite bands. More straight-forward songwriting than past efforts, with more female vocals and great atmosphere. Goldfrapp - Seventh Tree A very…
