Howard Smith was a long time writer for the Village Voice. Over the years, he interviewed and wrote articles about some of the icons of the 60's and 70's. Folks like Eric Clapton, John Lennon, and Frank Zappa were among those he interviewed. Like most journalists of the time, he would tape those interviews then go back and write his piece from those tapes. Fortunately, Smith had saved those tapes in hopes of using them for writing his memoirs and they've now been digitized and are going to be distributed on iTunes and a limited ed box set. Here's the article from the NY Times which includes some samples of those interviews. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/19/arts/mus…

Bands I Useta Like Some really funny stuff in there. Make sure you read Smashing Pumpkins and Stabbing Westward in order. I also particularly liked the Phish one and laughed my ass off at the Stone Temple Pilots one. In fact, I'm getting the giggles right now.

It's that time of the year again. One of these days I plan to attend but I'm happy enough to get my yearly wake up call of what's happening in the music world outside of my own melon. Here's a link to NPR's Austin 100. I usually use it to jot down artists I want to try and find streams of and hopefully shamelessly copy! https://www.npr.org/2018/03/01/585356494/the-austin-100-a-2018-sxsw-mixtape

http://niggytardust.com/ I haven't seen a thread about this album (here) - I managed to get a free copy before they took them down (after 100,000 downloads) and actually went back to pay $5 for the flac (eat that, radiohead). Disclosure: I was a big nine inch nails fan in the 90's. I'd heard William's "list of demands" prior to NiggyTardust!, and liked it too, though I am not generally a hip hop fan (beastie boys aside). I really like this album. It is probably one of the most interesting albums I've heard since American Edit. It is just, wow. Tremendous respect for Trent's productions skills. Some of the tracks sound very nin-like, others not at all, and it st…

The whole Hoffman/Gray Blue Note remasters and all of that stuff is great, but 45 bucks for one album is just too much to spend on an album unless I'm absolutely sure it has unsurpassed sound quality. What are the definite must haves in both music in sound quality? There are just too many times where I've read about some expensive new LP version of something that doesn't actually give any improvement, or is worse than the original.

So one fine evening on boxing day, still stuffed full of leftover turkey and feeling tired from 3 days straight of overeating, I am listening to some tunes. I've just gotten back from 3 days without headphone access. I'm listening to a lossless flac file and stop to take the headphones off all of a sudden... I think to myself 'wtf are my headphones/ears broken?' What has changed in these 3 days? I sit back in disbelief as I pack another bowl of some decent 'AA' BC hydroponic, contemplating how I will pursue a music career being deaf, or at least having sub-par hearing. Then, I see winamp flickering through the different mp3 bitrates (as it does with variable on…

I hope most of us have seen the doc of Sound City if not, shame on you! Well, I guess I'm a little biased when it comes to the golden age of recording studios and the like. The good news is that they've cleaned and preened the old place and it's now open for business once again! Complete with a full compliment of Ampex and 3M tape machines and a legendary Helios console. Check it out! https://www.soundcitystudios.com/

This originally came to me in a memo at work. But it's a public blog, so it seems worth passing on. I don't have a good sense of where this fellow's views fall. Centrist, lunatic fringe, I have no idea. But I think I'll keep an eye on what he has to say just on principle. http://lefsetz.com/wordpress/index.php/archives/2009/08/02/the-concert-business/ Here are the first couple grafs:

Plays the Music of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn Stereophile went gaga over this album. They gave it 4 1/2 stars for performance and five for sound. I checked it out on Lala and it does sound worth a serious listen. Can't speak to the five stars for sound part, since I only listened to a stream on my laptop speakers. Lala has this embed code feature with which I can allegedly post a player. (crossing fingers) [snip] Naw. Guess that doesn't work in forum posts. Here's a permalink. Maybe that will work better. Hey guys... just got an e-mail about this, but sadly it's not coming to my local Rave. FWIW, the e-mail presentation was MUCH fancier than the website. I guess I shoulda said "For,..". The 2012 Monterey Jazz Festival was a treat for Potter lovers. He played with several groups over the weekend and I was able to records a couple of the bands. I've put up 7 new 24/48 files on my SoundCloud account from the festival and 6 have Potter doing his thing. The first group is the Metheny Unit Band and the second cut has Pat using the Orchestron (killer automated multi instrument partially controlled by air pressure which you can hear swooshing in the background). The second group is the Monterey Festival on Tour which features Christian McBride-bass, Benny Green-piano, Potter, Ambrose Akinmusire-trumpet, and Lewis Nash o…

Oh Lordi. "In Finland, we have no Eiffel Tower, few real famous artists, it is freezing cold and we suffer from low self-esteem," said Mr. Putaansuu, who, as Lordi, has horns protruding from his forehead and sports long black fingernails.

http://www.golfrecords.co.uk/letthemeatvinyl.com/index.htm http://www.killingjoke.com/killingjoke_home.html http://www.plastichead.com/catalogue.asp?ex=backlist&target=KILLING%20JOKE I confess I am no vinyl-head, but I am a Killing Joke fan. Much of their back catalog suffers from the typical 80's CD mastering issues - bright, brittle, and anemic. I believe there are CD remasters on the way as well, but if anyone happens to a: be a KJ fan, b: have a vinyl rig they are proud of, and c: is in to making digitizations of their vinyl - I'd love to hear a couple tracks for comparison purposes. Well, I'd love to hear them all but that is a lot to ask...
