Back in the '90s, my favourite hi-fi store was selling high-end gear made by a small Australian company, named after its founder, Kostas Metaxas. At the time it was impressively better than famous brand names (in Australia at least) for what they were asking. They certainly were pretty hard-core about their designs, for example: Anyway, aside from that, I found they had put up some recording samples they'd made of jazz and classical, which, apart from a considerably amount of background hiss, are pretty good. I've never listened to any solo Lennon, aside from of course the single "Imagine". I am hoping to explore his music further, and am looking into picking up Plastic Ono, Mind Games, and Imagine. There is much debate over at SH forums as to whether the MFSL Gold CD versions are acceptable, since they are remixes. An eBay seller (CD LTD) has tons of copies of all three for around $25 apiece shipped. Feelings on remixes aside, I was wondering how folks here felt about the sound/sonics of the MFSL versions of the above three albums. If not the MFSLs, I'll probably hunt down some inexpensive vinyl versions. Or the new MFSL vinyls, but I heard new MFSL vinyl is noisy.

Anyone have any predictions? Or how about actual knowledge? SACD has firmly entrenched itself as a niche market...and getting "nicher". Are either HD-DVD or BluRay going to carry high-res audio, either high-rate PCM or DSD? (Can you tell I just read in this month's Stereophile the "As We See It"?) I WANT MY HIGH-RES!!!1!

Is the mastering on the LP version as horribly compressed as it is on the CD or does it actually have a little dynamic range?

So, I have a new favourite record store -- it's called Strangeland Records. It's near the intersection of Columbia Pike and Little River Turnpike in Northern Virginia. They specialize in all the music I like the most -- industrial, goth, electro, metal and goth -- the dark musics, as it were. And punk (I'm not that into punk, but they are). And they're having a sale starting Friday. I found the new Agalloch, Unexpect, And One, a limited Psyclone 9 and a whole bunch of others I hadn't planned on getting. Don't go in there expecting to find Katie Melua. Unless she's suddenly become a Suicide Girl.

Howard Smith was a long time writer for the Village Voice. Over the years, he interviewed and wrote articles about some of the icons of the 60's and 70's. Folks like Eric Clapton, John Lennon, and Frank Zappa were among those he interviewed. Like most journalists of the time, he would tape those interviews then go back and write his piece from those tapes. Fortunately, Smith had saved those tapes in hopes of using them for writing his memoirs and they've now been digitized and are going to be distributed on iTunes and a limited ed box set. I appear on this! This is unmastered -- it's halfway funded right now, it'll get mastered when it reaches funding. But even if it doesn't get funded, you still get all the unmastered tracks and IMHO, not all the tracks need mastering. (Mine just needs the first couple seconds of silence clipped off.) Wolfgang Voigt- Gas Some of you might be familiar with the electronic work by Gas. This is the same thing, except just some unreleased material not found on their other CDs. I have not heard his other releases under his own name, only the stuff released under Gas. It's hard to review this album, but to sum it up it's just an excellent dark ambient album that really draws you into the music. The downside is it isn't very long, under an hour and every time it comes to a close I'm wanting to hear more.

Many times I have wanted to ask someone to listen to a recording and compare a few notes, mostly around system "voicing" and dialing things in. So, we will see if there is interest to help. Yesssssssssssssssssssssssssss....do I like the East Coast..... '' It now looks as though we'll be undertaking a serious (3 week or so) N. American stint in June/July after Nearfest. Things still await absolute and final confirmation (and relevant work visas, naturally), but it looks as though we'll be paying visits to the following places at least: NYC, Washington, Cleveland, Chicago, Buffalo, Annapolis, Toronto, Ottawa, Quebec City and Montreal. I expect (I hope, for the sake of the budget!) that more will appear in due course. Sure, they will not be at the top of their game live due to their age, but I am very curious about the album. Could be great, could be bad. As long as Ozzy stays away from the writing and lets Tony and Geezer do their thing, it certainly has a chance. I will always see Sabbath live, because to this day, I have never heard such an awesome live guitar sound as Tony's. That alone, is worth the price. Going to be interesting...

Bands I Useta Like Some really funny stuff in there. Make sure you read Smashing Pumpkins and Stabbing Westward in order. I also particularly liked the Phish one and laughed my ass off at the Stone Temple Pilots one. In fact, I'm getting the giggles right now.
