Not asking who you think is the best. But who do you find your playing the most when it comes to trumpet? Piano? Sax? Seems like I listen to more (way more) Lee Morgan than any other trumpet player, maybe more than any other jazz. Followed by Freddie Hubbard Wynton Marsalis Piano is not close either. I think Gene Harris rules! Gene Harris Bill Evans Horace Parlan Sax is all over the place, but seems like Wayne Shorter, Dexter Gordon and Jackie Mclean get the most play time

I've been listening to a lot of concertos while studying for the CPA exam. Generally I think my rock brain can handle compositions with a focus on a single instrument more easily than I can handle symphonies or even chamber music. I can latch on to that violin/piano/cello/whatever and let it be my guide. Care to recommend your most listened to concerto recordings? Pics or links or whatever. Either I can then buy it or be like "yeah I have that one its awesome". Composer doesn't matter. Thanks!

A buddy of mine has been working with Winston Ma from FIM on a book about the "golden era" of Decca Records. During the last 18 months he has spent a good deal of time in the UK picking the minds of the folks who were involved with recording some of the most loved classical recordings of any era. Decca: Supreme Stereophonic Legacy was published and has been officially released. The 2 volume set includes 4 hi rez CD's. http://www.elusivedisc.com/Decca-Supreme-Stereophonic-Legacy-Ultra-HD-CD-Box-Set-4CD-Book/productinfo/FIMUHD088/

I've gotten hooked on Al Kooper's monthly article from the Morton Report. Kooper (Bob Dylan, Super Session, Blood Sweat and Tears etc) has always been a highly opinionated artist/producer and no matter how you feel about his personality, just playing on Electric Lady Land buys him a good bit of respect in my book. So, check it out. How I relate personally to the music list goes up and down a little from month to month, but I can't say that there's ever been one that didn't put a little fire in my heart. http://www.themortonreport.com/entertainment/music/new-music-for-old-people-braid-the-fray-ruthie-foster-owen-pallett-and-more/

Don't know where else to put thus, so why not a new thread. Tyll referenced this in his http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/headphone-news-june-2014 article, and I've seen it referenced elsewhere Marc Geiger's keynote from Midem 2014 is very accessible, compelling even, as he describes how the existing music business is facing "The Innovator's Dilemma" Lots to think about, and possibly agree with. Plenty of other interesting Midem presentations on the web (the website, youtube + slideshare.net) Discuss.

Found this on YouTube via Facebook, the full concert without all of the overdubbing and post-processing that mucked up the commercial version that I've been listening to for nearly 40 years now. Whether there is a God or not, I sure hope this gets put out on vinyl soon... very soon! I could care less about the 'footage' in terms of the video, it's the audio that sounds amazing! Hey Gang, I just put up a few 2013 Monterey Jazz Festival recordings I made on my SoundCloud page. This time, they're all 16/44.1 so if you should decide to download any, it's way quicker. Here's the artists in order; Diana Krall David Sanborn (yeah, a little lite at the beginning) Gregory Porter Orin Evans Trio Wayne Shorter Quintet Prism (20 min worth) http://soundcloud.com/ironbut28/krall

Some of you folks know that I'm a fan of early recordings. One of the attractions for me is the combination of music, scholarship and cultural anthropology. Here's an article (the name just doesn't do it justice IMHO) from the NY Times Magazine that has spurred some amazing threads amongst collectors. A little warning, this is much longer than your average article but if you're interested in this kind of stuff, the time is well spent. http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2014/04/13/magazine/blues.html

I'm not sure how long South X Southwest has been doing this live stream, but they seem to have it down. And I'm sure sponsorship has a lot to do with which stages/bands get onto the stream but there's not much that I enjoy as much as listening to bands who I've never heard before. At this level, I think they all have something to say. Check it out. If you hate who's playing right now, check back in an hour or so (between bands they run tape from their archives). http://sxsw.com/live

I thought this was a nice piece by NPR. http://www.npr.org/blogs/allsongs/2014/02/21/280715487/the-good-listener-for-bands-and-fans-the-no-fault-divorce?utm_content=socialflow&utm_campaign=nprfacebook&utm_source=npr&utm_medium=facebook The Neil Young example is actually a good one, but he still produces some good work every now and then, it's just not anything that even resembles his top form work. Johnny Cash and Dylan are exceptions in the sense that they both did (and Dylan still does) some of their best work in the later stages of their careers. But as far as adding purchased music to my collection, I'm just happy that there are so many ways…

I appear on this! This is unmastered -- it's halfway funded right now, it'll get mastered when it reaches funding. But even if it doesn't get funded, you still get all the unmastered tracks and IMHO, not all the tracks need mastering. (Mine just needs the first couple seconds of silence clipped off.) Namlook Tribue Bonus tracks At least 40 tracks averaging more than 5 minutes each, that's 200 minutes of music for $22, what a bargain! It's mostly ambient and atmospheric electro, and profits go to Namlook's family.

Yeah, I know this has been done to death on other sites, so hear me out. I could care less about the Hoffman forum diatribes of musical greatness and shit like that. I frequently read the "What Are You Listening To" thread here and many other threads to see what's out there and get a feel for what many of you truly love in music. If nothing else, we get a good sense of where you are coming from musically. I figure a top five list would underscore that, and, hopefully, people find some new music to listen to. What do my favorite albums have in common? Melody, energy, dynamics, and catchy as hell riffs/choruses/solos. I have to have something to hum in my hea…

From his diary entry: So, King Crimson is in motion. This is a very different reformation to what has gone before: seven players, four English and three American, with three drummers. The Seven-Headed Beast of Crim is in Go! mode. The 8th incarnation of King Crimson will be Gavin Harrison, Bill Rieflin, Tony Levin, Pat Mastelotto, Mel Collins, Jakko Jakszyk and Robert Fripp. Fripp says they should reappear about 1 year from now. I'll be waiting.

Have been shit testing this all day and must say I'm very pleasantly surprised. Throwing all sorts of obscure stuff at the wall to see what sticks, and generally the depth of what comes back is impressive. Happily listening to "Durutti Column Radio" for the last hour or so now without a single skip. Win. (Must be leveraging off the effort already put into Genius over the last few years?)

  21. Jonathan Tinn from Playback Designs was telling me there would be some big DSD announcements this summer and fall and this is one of the biggest. Glad to see the Acoustic Sounds Super HiRez store is live on day 1 and that they have a nice variety of music in DSD. I have not looked into how they have been made and cannot attest to the sound or quality specifically, but I think if Chad Kassem is going this deep into DSD he would do it right for the most part.

  23. It's been a while since I bought tickets for a popular band. Most of the stuff I like I feel lucky if they ever make it to the U.S. to tour, but tickets are easy and cheap to get. I already saw Pearl Jam during the 2000 tour three times, and they are awesome, but my wife never saw them. She's a big fan. For one reason or another, we never made the effort to go see them since 2000. But this time, I ran it by her, and she was excited. Cool, let's go for it. I sat by my computer ready to pounce right at the general sale time. Yes, I know there was a 10Club presale, but it was a lottery and many got screwed(and I'm not a member, so there's that). I reload the Tick…
