Speakers

I want to get a modest stereo setup going in my listening room, as well as a couch instead of just an office chair, so that more then one person can enjoy music. Someone over at sh.tv recommended I check out Orb Audio. I'm looking at their Classic Two Stereo Speaker System, and possibly a Sonic Impact T-Amp to drive them. Their tiny footprint is ideal, because the listening area is small, and these would fit well on the front corners of my desk. Has anyone ever heard these speakers?

Well...my computer speakers finally died and I'm looking to replace them with what little money I have left of my college budget. Anyone got any suggestions for relatively cheap, but good sounding computer speakers? I'm not looking for anything fancy. Thanks, Dave

Well, I'm moving to Houston to start my first job on July 1st. This means I'll finally be able to put together a 2.0 setup to use with my TV. I still haven't decided what will drive the speakers, but I'm toying with the ideas of either getting a decent Onkyo receiver from Amazon or getting an inexpensive integrated amp (NAD, Cambridge 640, Baby Sophia etc...) from A'Gon. I'm in the market for a new power amp, preferrably something with 300+ Watts into 4ohm. I've been considering picking up a used Rotel RB-1090 it would certainly fit the bill powerwise. But I keep seeing all the various "Class D" type amps and their size and weight make them intruiging options. Out of the Class D amps the ones that caught my interest the most are ones based on the ICE Power modules (think the new belcanto amps) and the Hypex UCD Modules (think CIAudio amps). Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated.

I've been looking around for the best speaker amp under $200. The options I've considered (Teac A1D, Cambridge Audio A5, Panasonic A-35R and Denon PMA-255) are: - Out of stock and nowhere to be found anymore for the Teac - Out of stock and UK available only for the Cambridge Audio, and Denon - Nowhere to be found anymore in the U.S. other than from pick-up in Montana for the Panasonic I keep hearing things about NAD. Are there NAD products that are available in my pricerange? I've loved my Outlaw Audio 1050 receiver, but it was time for something new. I thought about Denon again, but after the terrible experience with Denon service, I figured I'd be better off avoiding them. And considering my efforts to show something resembling fiscal responsibility, I was looking at lower-end Denon pieces which were very ugly uninspired. So I checked out HK stuff for the first time in years. I had an AVR 25 back in college and liked it. I was looking at the AVR 140 or 240 at the lower end of their line. I have a pair of QUAD 12L Pro Active speakers on some rather chunky and expensive stands that have sat completely unused since I sold my Balanced Home 3 months ago, which was also serving as a digital preamp. I have nothing to drive them with, and am not really too excited to purchase something, but if I did, it would need to be a DAC/Preamp w/volume control all in one. Balanced outputs would be great, but not important. So, my question is, what can I buy to give them a nice signal, or should I just get rid of them alltogether? Well I finally have my Europa's back from repair tonight and before they get shipped off to their new owner on Monday I figured I'd take some time to jot down how they compare to my Tyler Acoustic Linbrook Sigs. When the Europa's were my main speakers probably the biggest factor in wanting to upgrade was a lack of bass. I was able to confirm that lack of bass pretty soon after my comparison began tonight. While the Europa does well with the leading edge of bass notes (for instance bass guitar or kick drums) they fail pretty miserably at having the proper weight behind those instruments. This is my first post here. I am very happy with this system (for headphones - DT-880's,) however the speakers are starting to annoy me, while they are very detailed and lively they seem a bit forward and get tiring to my ears after a while in my setup. I really think I should have kept my last pair of speakers, Vandersteen 1C's. Now I'm seriously considering saving up for them again. This is a pic of my rig. The speakers are Omega Minuets that have modified by rewiring with thick solid-wire copper wiring inside, and the speaker wire is directly wired to the speakers. The source is 1212M running into the Luxman tube amp via silver interconnects.

No, that's not a typo, but no, I don't truly mean "at any price" greater than US$200, I just mean this: I recently put my speaker rig back together. The Manley Stingray -- at 12 tubes, 8 of them power tubes -- is just way too warm for a closed room in the summer. I am seriously considering getting this amp as my "summer amp". What is the next step up from that? Obviously, it doesn't have any competition at the US$200 price point, but is there something in the "not much more" category that I should be considering? These are impressions/mini-reviews of some small floorstanding speakers I've heard over the last 6-8 months or so. They include the Dynaudio Audience 72SE, Sonus Faber Concerto Domus, B&W 804S, Fab Audio Brat, Living Voice Avatar, and Acoustic Zen Adagio. The first 3 were auditioned with Class? & Chord electronics, the others with Korato tube amps and Exposure CD players. Part 1. The mainstream speakers. First the Dynaudio Audience 72SE. I took another trip to the local audio store so I could drool over the Shanling T-200 & T-300 CD players in person, but the main purpose was to check out small floorstanders & largish bookshelf speakers. I wanted to see if there was anything that could match the Living Voice Avatar at a lower cost. The summary is unfortunately not, but I did find a couple nice surprises. Keep in mind that my standard for good sound for small floorstanders is the Living Voice Avatar OBX-R, which is the tweaked out version of the Avatar. I've actually been using that setup more than my headphone rig as of late so I figure its time I put some more money into it.
