I Can't Hear You, Speaker Man, I'm Listening to My Headphones

  1. Started by postjack,

Anyone ever heard Dali speakers before? A positive review of the Ikon 6 in HiFi News a few months back, as well as an interview with the owner of the company in a more recent issue, has me interested in their products.

Hey guys, been using some CD cases as speaker stands. I want to find something 8x4x4 or similar....must be at least 8" tall....made from metal or wood...wood would be a plus. Going to hold up 5lbs speakers so it needs to be sturdy...

  3. Started by Fitz,

I have a bit of a dilemma with the audio rig at my desk. I had been using a pair of Acoustic Research AR4x's that I pulled out of a dumpster, but with my new monitor there isn't enough room for them to fit properly. I need to get some new bookshelf speakers that are 7" wide or smaller, and don't require a subwoofer crossed over way high to avoid sounding thin. I have no idea what's good on the market right now, which is made even harder to figure out due to the size constraint. So if anybody happens to know some nice speakers that are that small, I'd be very grateful for the advice.

  4. Started by tkam,

I'm going to be re-arranging my HT/speaker rig pretty soon and I'm going to need different length speaker cables than what I have now. I don't have a budget in mind but I'm not going to spend a ton on this. I'll be needing two 10ft runs for the main speakers, a short 5ft cable for the center channel and two 25ft runs for the rear channels.

  5. Anyone here know cheap speaker cables with small/skinny spade plugs? My McIntosh 2100 has tiny speaker taps (there's a pic of it around here somewhere) and most spades won't come close to fitting, unfortunately.

  6. OK I want to venture into full speakers utilizing my Alamarro A205AmkII that I currently use with my K1000. At the dealer I purchased the Almarro, he was demonstrating it with Zu Druids (?) with tremendous effect. But I need something smaller, suitable for SET amps (technically the Almarro is a 5 wpc single-ended pentode). From my feeble google effort, I find Coincident Triumphs and Zu Cradenza Credanza/Tone, but are there others I should consider??

  7. Started by mulveling,

I have the occasional mono vinyl, and they invariably sound like crap on stereo headphones or speakers. You get a wonderful stereo image of all the noise crud on the record's surface, while the music is a lifeless dead-center image. There also may be some sort of smearing from two speakers (that can never be exactly the same) trying to reproduce the same signal. Not long ago I heard a local fellow's pure mono setup, the speaker was a gigantic 50's or 60's Bozak cabinet with multiple drivers. The sound was very surprising, and extremely enjoyable. I'm not sure if you need the same kind of speakers to capture most of the magic, but since then I've been looking at my unu…

  8. Started by Fungi,

I'm using a Trends TA-10.1 right now and to me it's kind of bright and metallic without the Opera preamp in front of it. Not a great match for either my speakers or my Sigmas. I'm looking for an amp with balanced sound (can be on the warm side) that's preferably somewhat small and not too expensive, but if it's small and awesome I can swing a little more for it. But not CIAudio D-100 more (if only).

I just ordered a pair of these mono blocks for $899 with a 21 day return policy. I figured I would pick I would give them a try. I also would love some of you more tecnically knowledgeable to check out the website and let me know what you think, if you can tell from the information on the site: http://www.tubeaudiodesign.com/

Well Mikhail told me I would have some kind of balanced preamp as a loaner if my Maestro was not done before turkey-day. I get home today and here's a box with the Transparency SS balanced preamp in it. It detroys the Musical Fidelity cold out of the box. just so much more of everything. Not on the level of my Ayre K-1xe, but close. Not quite the detail or air in the top end. Better bass, and midrange is a little fuller with the SP. Overall a very smooth and relaxed preamp. A little soft on top, awesome midrange, and great bass. I can live with this until my Maestro gets here. Some photos in system and the mandatory vinyl shot. Photos attached of: The current system..…

I don't know if Tyll wanted to start a topic or not, but here's the new Headroom Audiophile Desktop line. http://www.headphone.com/products/audiophile-desktop/ Looks really nice overall. I especially love the speaker stands and I understand why Tyll has to price them like that (explained on that other place), but damn, if only they were cheaper/I were richer/etc.

  13. I sold my T-Amp and want something else. I have Athena AS-B1 bookshelf speakers so I am not really looking for anything super fancy. For now, I will be using Pico as pre-amp. I looked at T-Amp 2, but i'd rather get something more expensive and higher quality. Would prefer not to go vintage route coz been there done that already. Any recommendations are welcomed.

There seem to be quite a few speaker folk here, so I'm hoping you can help me out. I'm setting up an office system (pretty big office, but I don't listen very loud) and I would like to hear any suggestions you have. In another office I have some older Paradigm Atoms (I think V3) and a powered Paradigm subwoofer. It's nice, but I think it lacks a little treble and spaciousness. I don't want to get another subwoofer, so I'm looking for a set of monitors only. The bass response is less important to me than the treble and dispersion of sound. Something that doesn't require speaker stands would be preferable. The rest of the system is not definite yet, but I think I'll go w…

My Galantes are sold and I'm going to go for some smaller speakers. Right now I'm between this and Kef iQ3's. The KEF's are a little less with shipping, like $340. Do you guys have any other ideas? I'm trying to stay under $400 for speakers. Amp I'm not so sure, I was thinking of one of the Class D things like Kingrex, Winsome, or Nuforce Icon, or maybe that Glow Audio Amp One that is getting raves.

  16. Hey- So I want to enter the world of speakers, and the Quad 22Ls that tkam has for sale have caught my eye. Of course they are visually very attractive, and all the reviews I've read say they are a good neutral speaker at their pricepoint, and even a better deal used. Basically I would just want a speaker that is decent across all genres, and doesn't really try to do anything except portray what is on the recording pretty well. My initial application would be in a small quasi-office room where my headphone rig is. I forget the room's exact measurements, but I sit 8 feet from the wall, and so would be 5-6 feet from the speakers. Far from ideal, yes, but eventually I…

  17. I started this on head-fi as well but I thought for the poor suckers that aren't allowed to post on headfi anymore or simply just don't wanna I post it here also So, as title states I'm looking for a replacable amp for the Akai AM-69. The problem is it's broke as it provides the music with A LOT of noise and cracking. Very unpleasant to say the least. We once had it fixed and it worked for a while but it came back again, driving me nuts. Here's the catch: It has 2 coax inputs and 2 optical inputs. 7 line-ins and 3 line-outs. 180watt with 4 ohm and 100 watt with 8 ohm. The rest of the specs I do not have on me now, so if anyone needs to no more, let me know and…

Hello, I'm thinking about getting a new pair of speakers. I'm currently using a pair of Von Schweiker VR-1 monitors, but I'm moving into a larger space soon and am interested in getting some full size speakers.I'm currently using an April Music Aura Note, which is an excellent source and amp, but is just 50wpc. The room I'll be using them in is 15 x 14. I'd like to spend around $1000 or less, but that may be flexible. I don't have much experience with speakers as I've been a headphone guy in college. Any recommendations? Thanks

The latest version of the Maggie 1.6 was powered with an ARC tube amp and Conrad Johnson preamp with my North Star M192 (Cary CDP used as transport). First time hearing these speakers I was a bit unimpressed; they were bass light and had an over emphasized top end. I'm guessing this tube system helped tame them, and IMO for $1600 these are probably the best bargain I've heard so far. Setup in a well dampened room, pulled out about 4 feet from the back walls. Handled Opeth and Iron Maiden surprisingly well, something I couldn't say the first time I heard them

I'm working on a pair of speakers that will be 13.5" high, 7" wide, and 14.75" deep at the base. What sort of rule of thumb do you use when choosing appropriate stands? These Dynaudio1 stands just showed up, but I'm not sure they'd be the best match: http://cls.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?accsrack&1208786474 Any recommendations?

Alrighty boys. All I've done in HC was bullshit around since I've been here and I figure now's a better time than ever to get serious. Here's my audio history, it kind of sucks, but it's better than nothing. I've always been a fan of high quality sound, and it all stated with my Sony walkman back in the mid 90's. I found the stock earbuds to be horrible and I bought the Sony Fontopia earbuds (~$115 and I was 12 years old) and found them to satisfy me. Fast forward 10 years, I'm in college and bought a pair of cheap headphones from Circuit City (Panasonic blah blah blah ~$30) and they were perfectly fine through college. In 2006 when I graduated and moved home, I realiz…

I was listening to Wish You Were Here the other day and I swear, Gilmour was in the wall playing and singing to me. I had to get my roommate in my seat and he said "creepy, it's like your own personal concert." This setup isn't even expensive or acoustically well set up. And then I realized that there is no avoiding getting a speaker rig when I settle.

I'm planning on using my ?22 as a preamp with McIntosh MC2100 and Eminent Tech LFT-8b. Just wondering if anyone around here knows how ?22 stacks up as a preamp. I'm hoping to get a standalone unit, but that won't be for a while with recent and upcoming non-audio expenditures. Oh, and anyone has thoughts on Promitheus Audio TVC? It has rather attractive price and seems to be well-received (though it would be nice if it had a remote).
