  1. Apparently we're fostering a pupper until we can find her a human.

  4. Things are ok here. Pretty much all clear by noon. No limbs blocking streets. No fallen junk. We had an exhausting day hauling stuff to change from hurricane mode to no power for two weeks mode. Got the tree off our roof. Very little damage really. Cosmetic stuff to a few houses. No twisted road signs. I didn't see any damaged commercial buildings. A lot of broken trees. Our neighbor lost about a dozen. The only broken power pile I saw at all was in front of our workshop. No worries for us. The guys who make their living in that building may feel otherwise. The big discomfort is the power. Eight hours in - at low end tropical storm winds- we had a million people without power. In broward alone. Not a good showing for FPL. And they've already warned us that they won't be up to their usual sterling standard for restoration. So we're looking at two weeks for a storm that didn't even block any streets. Grrr.

  5. Everything is fine here. Had lost power between 11pm yesterday and 9 am this morning. Spent the day raking and cleaning up relatively small debris. Some minor damage to the porch screen door was the extent of the physical property damage. No flooding at all by us but I saw pictures of some locals water skiiing with a pickup truck in downtown Daytona Beach. Glad everyone else is also OK.

  6. Sorry for the delay, but here is Gene's morning update: All ok here, Al. Irma took last minute veer to the east (inland) and spared us the worst. No damage, flooding or injuries. Just shrubs, branches, small trees, and litter to clean up. Very lucky. Powet expected to be out for a while, but we have water service. It was an adventure for sure. Also, Steve is back "home" at the trailer park but he is staying in another person's trailer because they are out of town and Steve's trailer would be rather breezy (big hole in it). He has no power or internet so he is not likely to be here much for the moment. He wanted me to let everyone know he is good and I'm excited that he is seriously considering moving back to the Bay Area by November. Woot!

  15. Well, next time assume that's girth, not length, and you won't be so sad.

  16. Where our daughter lives in Australia, the really common big one is the Golden Orb Weaver. Non poisonous (although they can give you a nip), but a big bugger with a body length (not including legs) of 5cm. They keep to the forest floor during day, and come out at night and spin their webs across forest paths in serious quantity - so walking at night can be an "adventure"!

  17. Aluminum or some alloy of it as it is anodized. Since this was bumped, these have been placed in the 'stat storage and I don't see any need to use them. They are ok but need a lot of work until they are finished. They do remind me a lot of the insanity of the old HE Audio garbage, thinking that super high resistance on the diaphragms would somehow make them not noisy from the lack of dust covers or using a coating that absorbs moisture is somehow a good idea. It's such fun to be listening and having to take the phones off your head after 20 minutes so the built up moisture can dissipate and the diaphragms can be charged up again. Such design... I also love the fucktard on HF claiming the Orpheus clones they have are some sort of upgraded model from these. First off...I got them not two months ago and second...you can just pick which version you like. The builder claims these are the more accurate ones so let's just go with that. I actually specified dust covers but they clearly impact the SQ... Next up will be the Ether 'stats which might be problematic with a 0.58mm DS gap.

  19. I checked in with Gene again and he is fine for now but will be spending the night in a windowless hallway six floors up. He is comfortable with their safety but worries about the aftermath, obviously. I love this picture of Carl and Bonnie hunkering down on FB:

  23. Sören being a fucktard...glad to see nothing changes when I take a week off in Niagara. So pathetic... As for the review, if anybody thinks that I had anything to say about any of it... you have clearly never talked to Bob or followed any of his work. He told me he would write what he wanted and I got zero say in it, which is exactly what I wanted. This wasn't even supposed to be a review, he just asked me if he could borrow a Carbon to give the 007's an equal platform against the dynamic competition. I was happy to oblige, sent him my personal Carbon and also offered him a Pure Bipolar to try out, to create an even more even playing field. Both sets being driven balanced with amps that share the same design ideas. This was back in February or March and it was only after he'd heard that this grew into a kind of review. I knew he liked them as he bought the Pure Bipolar and will probably buy the Carbon as well but I didn't have any idea what he would write. Hell I didn't even know when it was posted, I only heard about it when my inbox lit up. Now normally I would never even entertain the idea of having reviews as pretty much all are garbage, done by people with the integrity of used care salesmen/realtors and are just verbal diarrhea. Just look at the garbage Jude is posting and he's far from the worst. You may disagree with Bob's findings all you want but he sure as shit is more entitled to his opinion that most. He did expose Focal and I know from experience that it isn't easy to hold up an opinion that goes against the "norm", no matter how wrong the "norm" may be. I have fond memories of the death threats I got from some unstable people after I said the HE90's were far from the best. I can also imagine how happy Focal were about all of this...

  25. That is just as shocking now as it was when it originally happened. I was working in London at University College when the Prof came in and said "one of my old students, living now in New York has just emailed - planes have crashed into the twin towers and one has collapsed; I thought it was a bad joke, until I checked on the web". No more work got done. All the the business tower blocks in London were evacuated in case we were a target too (given our close ties to the US). As I traveled home, there was total silence on the underground - everyone was kind of in shock about what was happening in New York (and the attack on the Pentagon, and Flight 93). I'd lost track of the fact that it was 16 years ago.
