  1. the "GS-1 mk2" that has been requested, coming soon..it will look like a mini GS-X mk2. Evidence of how cheap PCBs are now..

  2. Ordered.... along with rotors to replace the warbling, turkey-calling, Avid Elixir 7s that originally came on the MTB. Thanks to a pretty big sale and a $100 credit I had at Backcountry I should be into the whole swap for around $200.

  11. On high Z, the L2 has a Zout of something like 50 Ohms. The headphones have an impedance of 80 Ohms at 1KHz, but 300 Ohms at 50Hz. That means there is a voltage divider with the headphone Z and amp Z. So, if there is a 1V signal, at 1K about 38% (50/(50+80)) of that signal is lost to the amp's impedance, and the other 62% goes to the phones. So you are left with a 0.62V. At 50Hz, the amp is still 50 Ohms but the phones are 300 Ohms. That means they get 86% of the signal. That's nearly a 3dB boost at 50Hz. Hence too much bass.

  13. Trying the Elear earpads on the Utopias. It's like getting two! two! headphones for the price of one extraordinarily expensive one. Tyll measured the FR difference between the pads and on paper it looks like a minor difference. On my head, it's as if they're different headphones. Instead of maybe too cool with maybe a bright spot, you get maybe too warm and bass that's maybe (likely) too big. Dynamics in the lower mids are nicer. I'm wondering a little how they would sound with silver cables, which would be the last thing I would consider with the Utopia pads. For me, the Elear pads are more comfortable. They are a sort of rough-ish chamois-like leather instead of the shiny glove leather of the Utopia ones. More like velour, which is usually my preference. The big question is which is better, emotional-connection-with-the-music wise. At this point, I think I'm leaning toward the Utopia pads.Tyll wrote that he preferred the Elear pads. We'll see. Or hear.

  16. With any of our amps (have to put the caveat "when built properly" as I've seen people jumper the safety stuff) and the Stax ones the damage potential would be minimal. With the bias, sure it is 580V but it's based on a very current limited voltage doubler circuit plus the 4M7 high voltage ballast resistor on the output will prevent any damage. The amp section could deliver some real hurt though, +/-400V or upwards power supplies with the amplifiers being able to swing almost from rail to rail meaning you could see ~1500Vpp or more at one output. This plus generous class A biasing means there is a lot of power at play here, hence the 5.1K output resistors. If there would be a short to ground (i.e. you) they would take off the worst of it. Now look at Woo Audio, Cavalli plus other amps and these protection provisions are just not there.

  22. They are that, but they are available. DSHA3 and DSHA3F (specifically for Focals, picture below in walnut) are the current models, and Tom and I are very close to releasing the T5 which is effectively a DSHA output stage with tube gain. Indeed, I just received an updated T5 power transformer in the mail today that I soldered in not 10 minutes ago.
