  1. The last of retirement projects, at least for this week, are complete.

  2. Buddies of mine recently announced this. The thing is pretty much coax and phase linear without using FIR filtering, so there's no pre-ringing and stupid amounts of delay.

  3. Ended up throwing the scrap together for glue up last night and then ran it through the planer this morning. Going to be a 30lb cheese tray I think.

  4. 1. Not hardly in charge, but we’ll see what the next few months bring for change around here. I have full faith and trust in HR’s ability to completely fuck it up. 2. I think we’re giving the surplus to Australia so you might have to fight a dingo or a kangaroo for one. Does head control work on non-native species? 3. The cutting board came out beautiful, which makes sense given it’s deadly nature. I would love to have a shop big enough to house a planer and jointer but that’s not in the cards. So I’ll have to keep ping ponging for a while and having fun with that.

  5. I assume with all these retirements you must be in charge of everything by now Nate. I would like to chat with you about surplus nuclear subs that might be available for a plan I am working out. Put the Walrus Wax on the board and threw it in the kitchen as Kasia decided to keep this one.

  6. The drivers are actively filtered, so the slopes must be rather shallow to get no phase shift. I have listened to the prototype which had different filtering and power electronics. The sound was superb! The mains in my system are of similar principle, only they use Scanny 15MU midwoofs and the same Faital HF1440 CD. The mids are nicer on mine and they go louder - circa 120dBSPL peak at 1m. Got their acoustician to come to my place and dick around with SMAART to tune them to my subs and room. Haven't heard this kind of percussive transients outside of [very few] pro studio control rooms.

  9. Hah! I saw drift immediately, Sam. Every grinder is going to need calibrating sometimes. The process is super duper simple, but I was having to do it every time I used the grinder. The Niche is great, and very well designed. I think this was just an issue of rushing to get product out. Anyway, It’s just not going to replace flat burrs for me for filter. I’m weird and actually prefer conical for espresso, but I like that flat burr distribution for filter (I grind pretty fine for filter, but I want a different fine, if that makes sense).

  10. Looks great, sadly it will kill you within a fortnight.

  11. It looks very promising. All drivers are FR or they use an active filter? Let us know about the sound when you try them

  12. Re: Niche. I like it a lot. After I took it to pieces and fixed the assembly issue that was causing calibration to drift. I’m sure this is a QA issue due to trying to get units out, but I also doubt the average buyer could have fixed it (I’m hardly the average buyer, fortunately). It is nice to use and fun and happy looking and will never be the limiting factor to any espresso I make (it ain’t replacing the Ode with SSP for filter, but would be fine if I didn’t have that). It is certainly inferior to the OE OG and, to a lesser degree, the Option-O Remi, but these are not surprises. I’m glad I bought it, and I grant a mulligan to the assembly issues. Basically no bearing surface was tightened enough, and I replaced two washers that were undersized in the drive shaft: being undersized the torque of grinding beans caused the assembly to move, as the washers didn’t do their job of preventing motion (certainly prevented friction!). Ode had the same issues, more or less. Sticks now, after use.

  13. It worked out okay, but one thing I can say with surety is that my Breville and my Flair 58 do not take the same grind size. Also I’ve gotten used to the huge amount of power the Bellman has for steaming. Having said that, this is a delicious latte. It’s ugly, but I got a very good mouthfeel from the oat milk, and there is no bitterness in the shot despite is stalling out HARD. Let’s call that a long pre-infusion. I had to do some mitigation, in process, temp surfing etc., but I hate wasting coffee or milk if I don’t have to. With a lid on a paper cup I would have left any cafe I know happy. But it’s boy ugly.

  16. The study seems to just say to me that if you grind something up your whole career and inhale it you may, or may not get cancer. I think you can take out Teak and add anyfuckingthing else and have the same study.

  17. Indeed, though several paragraphs above where he recommends using it, Bob suggests avoiding wood with toxic stuff in it which teak decidedly has. It is probably fine, and I doubt that wood cutting board poisoning is really a thing. But if I had a pile of walnut laying about, I'd use that instead (which goes for pretty well every project short of building a canoe). Wenge I just hate working with.

  18. Just six years later than Colin, I have now made this cheese buldak recipe twice and love it.

  19. I'm very sad to report that our very own Carl Stephen "ironbut" Koto passed away on July 2, presumably from the lung cancer he informed us about in late May. Several of us have been concerned about his absence and both Ric and I (and maybe others) tried calling him to no avail, eventually receiving notice that the line was no longer in service. I tried searching for information but did not find anything until this morning I finally found a death notice for Carl Koto in Eugene, Oregon at age 66, and that must be him. 😢 Steve was a great and gentle guy and a fantastic Head-caser. His reel to reel rig will be remembered as one of the all-time best headphone experiences for many, many people. I'm happy that he had a few years of retirement in Eugene when he could make music and take it easy, but it truly sucks that he didn't have longer. Just to prove how humble and unassuming Steve was, I couldn't find a decent picture of him so I hope others can find more to post here. RIP Steve, you will be missed.
