  1. There might be price breaks on the 99 series relatively soon with the supposedly imminent release of the QUAD platinum electronics. They aren't replacing the 99 series - they'll be in a higher price bracket, but there still might be a drop in 99 series prices. Edit: 909 gives 250W/4Ω
  2. The box in the video looks identical to the standard 600/650 box with a nicer cover and nice lining inside.
  3. The really odd/interesting part is that is you use their search and type in HD800 or HD 800, it also gives you the HD 680 link... edit: duh, that's probably how you found the link in the first place...
  4. Tyll, I noticed that you said that HeadRoom 'needs' to grow to 5 times its current size. What is your thinking behind that, other than 'wouldn't it be nice'?
  5. Agreed, I was using them out of my iPod yesterday in a moment of total laziness and they were fine. Not the headphones I know and love, but fine. It's not like the frequency response magically changed into a completely different headphone or something. Maybe I'm the only one who really does like the D-5k. As always, I put the caveat that I only listen to classical music, but in mastering my own recording (anyone here own a record company?) I found them to be surprisingly accurate as headphones go.
  6. I love the FR spec tolerances. '5hz-21khz'. Then you look at their little graph and see that they are only -30dB at 21k...
  7. I hear ya, but that wasn't quite what I was going after. I'm wondering what kind of response curve you are looking for with your EQ. Speaker 'flat response' ≠ headphone 'flat response'! In classical recordings we don't go in for fiddling with response curves or 'room corrections' usually. The room is part of the recording decision in the first place. Things are done as 'naturally' as possible, at least if I have any say in it. Often you need to fiddle around with EQ but that's only through comparing the master to the in hall sound and trying to get the best match to ear.
  8. Don't you have to consider what response curve you are actually looking for? There are good reasons why headphone response curves aren't 'flat' (and some pretty bad ones as well). It seems you are basically looking for a 'flat' response on the potentially incorrect assumption that this is more 'accurate' and true to the source.
  9. Despite having most of the same names, the Kellogs line up of cereals in the UK have slightly different flavours and textures than the US variety. Same with Philadelphia actually - my cheesecake recipe tastes like crap with UK Philadelphia...
  10. What if they build an organism that takes over the world and destroys all the humans?
  11. Hi again everyone! A few small life crises since my last posting spree, hopefully I can post a bit more now. But what can I talk about now that I'm not in the US and HeadRoom don't send me stuff anymore? :'(
  12. If they had an active option for all their L2 line I'd be all over them. I love active speakers - wish they were more common. Had the 12L Active's - I think Dusty has them now. Nice speakers - perhaps I shouldn't have got rid of them.

If you have such a small room, there is little point trying to get more bass extension IMO.
  14. "I thought it was impossible to bypass the iPod's DAC. "So did we," said Wadia president John W. Schaffer. "Then we discovered the little-known fact that Apple had a process called 'authentication' that allowed mobile electronics companies to bypass the iPod's internal DAC." "Authentication" refers to Apple's authentication chip, which essentially tells the iPod that it's okay to output raw digital audio or video data to the chip-enhanced component. The authentication chips are only available in Apple products or from products made by Apple-licensed third-party developers. After Wadia first began developing what became the iTransport, Apple opened up the authentication program to more third-party vendors. The iTransport may be the first audio product of its kind, but it probably won't be the last. But however you slice it, being firstest is a great coup." Quirks: "Supported models: Nano G1: Does not support video and can only output digital audio in the "extended interface" mode. Translation: The iPod click wheel interface is not available while the Nano attached to the iTransport using digital audio out. Nano G2: Does not support video. However, it does output digital audio without the click wheel interface being disabled. Nano G3: Supports component video out and will allow digital audio out while still allowing the iPod click wheel interface to function normally. iPod Video: Supports S-video out (no component video). It only outputs digital audio in its "extended interface" mode. The iPod click wheel interface is not available while the player is attached to the iTransport and using digital audio out. Supports component video out and enables digital audio out while still allowing the iPod click wheel interface to function normally. iPod Touch: Supports component video out and enables digital audio out while still allowing the iPod click wheel interface to function normally. iPhone:Supports component video out and enables digital audio out while still allowing the iPod click wheel interface to function normally. However, when an iPhone is docked in the iTransport, it will state that the accessory is not designed for the iPhone and will query whether or not the user wants to switch into "airplane mode" (essentially switching off the cell phone). Since the iTransport does work with the iPhone in either mode, either answer is appropriate."
  15. Why? We know exactly what he's doing.
  16. Can I post something on topic in here? Having decided not to go for the new we-love-ALO-5G, my 4G iMod battery life went to shit, so I bought a new battery and had Vinnie put it in - turns out something is very wrong with the charging circuit and a new battery still discharges itself very rapidly. So Vinnie offered to do the mods on another iPod for free, so I'm going with a refurb 5.5G 80Gb. Yep, that means the silly overpriced ALO stuff, but I'm just going with the connector with caps in it (w/o cable). So I'll report how it does when I get it. I must say that I seriously doubt that Vinnie fried my iPod's circuit board whilst doing the mods, and even if he did, it's still quite generous to offer to mod another one for free. I've bought a few things from him over the years and his customer service has always been exemplary...
  17. You know, I think this is one of the problems with IEM's - they really do seem to interact with our ears in an even more specific way than other headphones. I find the 650 only slightly dark, and yet don't find the ER4s bright at all... At home, given a choice of all dynamic headphones, I'd listen to 650's, and on the road, given the choice of all IEM's (by the sounds of it anyway) I'd choose the ER4p or s (probably the s). At my ears, the both err just slightly on opposite sides of neutral but are both close enough for my ears not to sit there going 'if only they were just a bit more...'.
  18. I can tell you that the vinyl system you are looking at is really very nice, and will make it worth your while. Of course, you'll need to be playing source material that's in good condition. I wouldn't think of it as something to compete with your Reimyo - it might just give you a different perpective on sound reproduction and what is possible.
  19. That's my feeling as well. It's either UE-10's/Sensas or nothing so far - but I've had musician's ear plugs made 3 times and I still don't have completely comfortable customs, so I am not so sure about the UE-10's either. Just wanted to know from someone who thought Ety's were incredible IEM's if any of the new bling top of the line models were better in those ways?
  20. Ok, so go for Tilson Tuchus and the SFS then... . If they are SACD and you are into such things, you might be more inclined to listen to them, which at this point is a good thing methinks.
  21. Please don't - think of the money as an investment. If you are considering this to be part of your classical music education, you'll end up having to buy the Bernstein set anyway! Save yourself the money and just buy it to start with. I personally recommend the 80's set. Technically, the sound is excellent for mid-80's digital, and musically, Bernstein is at his peak, they are live, and you also get a tour of the different sounds of the world's great orchestras (and to some extent, concert halls).
