  1. Wait, you had time to read in basic training?
  2. Dinny, if your workplace uses Outlook for email there's a nice Outlook/Google Calender sync tool out there. Then bookmark Google Calender. Due to security policies I've never been able to sync email, but at least now I know when to roll out of bed.

  4. When/if I upgrade from the 3G, I doubt audio will be the determining factor of size (iPads taken over a lot of the iPhones chores and with the iPads digital out the iPhone been regulated to mostly streaming WFMU, UBU, TAL, NPR, etc.), but video shooting may be. Those with 4s (or even 3Gs), do you find yourself shooting much and if so how much space are you consuming regularly?

  6. Wes, thanks again for your input here. Definitely appreciated. I guess my confusion could be boiled down to the maybe overly simplistic question - if it's perfectly fine to downsample 176.4 to 88.2 and 192 to 96, and you end up with the exact same analog output with the lower mHz, why do people build 192 (or higher) DACs? What's the upside? Less likely downsample errors? Better marketing?
  7. Early '80s Dave Grusin production. "with... the virtual indestructibility of the Compact Disc, it can truly be said that this performance of the Glenn Miller Orchestra will last forever."
  8. 4.1 out. Just installed and my 3G model seems snappier. Not sure if it's quite pre-iOS 4 speeds or if app issues will hit any minute, but fingers crossed. Speaking of fingers, only have to press touchscreen once to register touch again.
  9. Hey Wes, thanks for the response. I'm curious though why it's fine for 176.4 to be downsampled to 88.2 and (assuming based on DAC market) not equally so for 192 down to 96? Is it just the number of tracks out there (I may be an oddity as I have a bunch of 176.4s and zero 192s), is it something inherently different about the two kHz groups and stepdowns or is this only about feeding the DAC, not later upsampling?
  10. Well, you'll never hear me badmouth the Parasounds. Love bang for buck and I picked up the D/AC 1600, 1500 and a 1100 for about the same as I'm getting the used DA10. Lavry has a similar signature and only adds a some air and a little better placement if memory serves. Well that and the nasty bitrate piece of mind. Posted it elsewhere, but a camera kit and a $20 UCA202 USB/toslink adapter coupled with one of the Parasounds and Pico Slim makes an incredible, oddly proportioned, ultra-unportable iPad/JH13 rig. Dinny if you have an adapter you should give it a shot. Interesting to compare against the much more usable Pico DAC.
  11. Well, I'm backtracking to safe grounds lately with the full-sized. Becoming cowardly in my old age. Been plenty happy with the three Parasounds, but want to handle 24-bit stuff on at least one and go much smaller if possible. The DA10 was the only DAC I've owned superior to the Paras generally, especially when messing around with the modes. Dan Lavry would probably cringe, but throwing the switch to wide mode and upsampling the tracks (which of course counters my original question - but I'd like both options) pushed the DA10 above the D/AC 1600 (although my DA10 was sold a long time ago, kind Al let me his to A/B last year). As for as I can tell, the DA11 loses this manual override, so coupled with used going half price and not needing USB, put a bid on the DA10 this morning. Still tempted by PWD and WyredStallyns4Sound, but cash going elsewhere. We'll see.
  12. Thanks guys. I think I've found my solution (kinda downgrading back to previously owned gear for some reason - maybe the JH influence), but been curious about this for months and kept wanting to ask. BTW, Lavry claims up to 200 mHz in wide PLL mode on both DA10/11, though I'm not sure of the specifics over USB specifically.

    The Wire

And done. Although it definitely got better in the later episodes, the press stuff worked well and it was fun to see Homicide (show) alumni again, season five was the most TV-y in plot device, rediculous execution (characters change to fit storyline) and stretches sold by McCliche therefore was the worst season by far. Bad as in "have I been duped earlier?" bad. Seriously, they blew it here. Still four solid seasons before and a nice wrap-up places this high on televisions list. Just wish their sure hand didn't falter the last year.

  16. Because of some Refence Recordings, HDTracks, etc. files, I started off my recent DAC hunt by eliminating any model that didn't support 88.2 or 176.4 kHz. Unfortunately, that eliminates a ton of DACs (MiniMax, Neko, etc.). I know several use the same chip, but not all. Some, like Lavry, expect even less standard kHz, so curious why these two 44.1 x X points aren't more widely supported?
  17. Reminds me of http://www.head-case.org/forums/off-topic/7464-dr-bronners-magic-all-one-18-1-hemp-peppermint-pure-castile-soap.html without the actual soap. Hey, their showroom is only 8 miles away.

    The Wire

I've got the set and you're welcome to borrow, but between two members here who spoke up first, two outside friends and a co-worker I've talked up so much they've requested and a GF catching up on first two seasons, I suspect they're going to be busy for a while.

  24. But like being recessed, the angle of the curve can also determine the difference between the start of the jack and any edge that gets in the way of a large plug that needs clearance, right? Or put another way a curve makes a portion of the jack recessed.
  25. Looks to be an increasingly curved surface (due to thinness), so assuming the jack is completely recessed thought some wider plugs may have issues with front edge. Kinda like iPhone 1G. As for the Roku, all models prices all dropped yesterday. That timing couldn't have been a coincidence. I like the Roku and the HD version has more output options than the ATV (including TOSLINK - say you wanted to use with conventional DACs and with the Rokus Pandora, RadioTime, etc. channels). Remote and GUI are decent, but you'd never mistake them as designed by Apple. Lets call them functional. For Netflix, you still have to add to queue, etc. on a computer, but play, pause, etc. can all be done with the players remote. The Apple TV obviously has greater communication with your other devices (Roku doesn't communicate with your computers except cloud based settings - Pandora station setup, Netflix streaming queue, etc.). Big win for ATV there. Shame we can have the TOSLINK and local lossless library on the same streamer. The choice between the Roku and ATV really depends on those communication and connection needs and how quickly Apple or Roku adds 'channels'/'functionality.' When it comes to that, if I had to leap on faith it would be with Apple. And like adding FM to the nano today, they allowing Netflix is hopefully a positive sign of change on their part. A little more open (even if main motivator is market). It's just today I'm a little disappointed as my hopes were rather high for a different OS on the Apple TV.
