  1. Hi All, I teach high school science, and our department has a bit of money to spend. Our school is very dependent on technology for PowerPoint and other software for curriculum, so any problems with our desktops or LCD projectors is a BIG hassle. I suggested that we invest in a laptop and projector to use exclusively as a roving backup for teachers in our department. I am only looking for absolute reliability since every new laptop can run Powerpoint and any other education software one can dream of for lecture purposes. In my very short search thus far, something like this would be about right: http://www.overstock.com/Electronics/Lenovo-ThinkPad-Edge-E520-1143D7U-15.6-LED-Notebook-Core-i5-i5-243/6309432/product.html I am sure I can find a better price, but it's a start. I am strongly leaning toward an entry level Lenovo Thinkpad, but any PC based suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance.
  2. Fans of The Gathering! The band is going to release a new album this September; however, a new track called "Heroes For Ghosts" has been released recently: http://thegathering....roes-for-ghosts I have to say, even though they no longer have Anneke, this song is as good as anything they have ever done! The songwriting is very solid, and the new singer, Silje Wergeland, is the PERFECT replacement for Anneke. The last album, "The West Pole" was great, but this track takes the band back to their former glory. It is that good. Download it. Now.
  3. Night and day = I have no objectivity and/or ability to convey subtle differences without hyperbole.
  4. Forgot about that. I have always had a computer as a source, so I was looking through that lens exclusively by habit. This also has Bryston's 20 year warranty since it is an analog product. That's always nice
  5. Last I checked the balance knob is still there. I would never have a use for such a thing (software can do it more precisely), and it is one more thing that is in the signal path. Looks really nice though. I wonder about the topology though, because the mW into a high impedance is higher (667mW @ 600ohm) than into a lower one (500mW @ 32ohm). I have never seen such a figure. I always thought it was the other way around for pretty much any amp. http://bryston.com/PDF/brochures/BHA1_BROCHURE.pdf
  6. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKIQGpl0NiY My expectations just went up a lot for this album! Sign up and download here if you wish: http://www.burningshed.com/store/kscope/freedownload/46/
  7. Happy birthday! Hope it's a good one.
  8. Is there an emoticon for throwing up ones hands in frustration? http://www.prefixmag.com/news/black-sabbath-cancel-reunion-tour/62099/ I hope Tony feels better, first and foremost. They should just call it quits if and when he feels good to go. Only then should they think about going on. Having said that, so much money has already been invested, so I suppose this is them making the best of it. The odd part is the lack of a mention of a replacement for Bill Ward...
  9. Ughhh, I'll never be able to listen to that song again without cringing!
  10. Dude, this is the 21st century; you don't have to decide. But in the end, it'll get you in the ass. Wait! Whatever goes around comes around? DAMN

  12. Rick Santorum Declares War On Heavy Metal By Keith Spillett Rick Santorum has been on the offensive lately, but his target has not been Republican frontrunner Mitt Romney or even President Barack Obama. For the past week, Santorum has been using his campaign to take aim at an issue he feels to be the single most dangerous force in America today: Satanism in heavy metal. “If you listen to the radio today, many of these brand new, so-called heavy metal music bands like Black Sabbath, Venom, The WASP and Iron Maiden use satanic imagery to corrupt the minds of young people,” announced Santorum at a 10,000 dollar a plate sock-hop in Valdosta, Georgia on Thursday. Santorum’s popularity in the polls has grown substantially since he began speaking out against metal and its assault on traditional values. He has spent much of the past week in the Midwest encouraging young people to stay away from metal artists and listen to performers like Michael W. Smith and Pat Boone. In a recent Gallup Poll, 87 percent of Republican voters think that the biggest problem in America today is “the demented bloodlust of teenagers caused entirely by heavy metal music.” In the past, Santorum has accused heavy metal of being the cause of some of the worst crimes in American history including the attempt on the life of Ronald Reagan in 1981, 9/11 and the passage of Obama’s Health Care Bill. He stepped up his rhetoric in a speech on Wednesday when he implied that heavy metal is the cause of many forms of mental illness as well as lactose intolerance. It’s probably not a coincidence that since he began his crusade against metal that his poll numbers have been surging upwards. Picking out a small and unique group, singling them out as “other” and using them to frighten the masses is a proud tradition in American politics. However, many commentators believe that his call for metal internment camps goes too far. Santorum has openly advocated the forced re-education of metalheads. They would be forced to endure 30 days of non-stop “values based” music that promotes the American way of life as well as the free market. In order to leave, they will have to sing the chorus to at least one Celine Dion song. In response to Santorum’s metal onslaught, Mitt Romney officially denounced his earlier position of “tolerance towards all fans of extreme music”. This, in spite of the fact that GWAR played his inauguration as governor of MasNoNoNoNoNoNosetts back in 2003. But things have changed since 2003 and embracing heavy metal music is about as popular selling baby organs on Ebay or clubbing seals. Romney will need to begin pretending to be something else if he plans on facing Obama in the general election in November.
  13. She has a new band called ReVamp. She still has it for sure, but her voice is the only thing good about it. Still worth a listen just for new material with her voice on it.
  14. The closest thing to her in the metal world is Floor Jansen. She is an unbelievable singer, but the bands that she was/is with are pretty shallow and bad. It's a shame, because Floor is my favorite female singer.
  15. The only reason to see Sabbath live now would be to hear Tony and Geezer. I was never a huge Bill fan, but I very much respect him, and he seems like a nice guy. Ozzy, though I still love the guy, will never be what he was, but like you said, Sabbath without Ozzy is not my thing. I have to say, even though the public knows jack about this contract debacle, I am totally on Bill's side here. The differences between his letter and the Sabbath response is all I need to know. He might not be able to finish the tour, but at least set up the contract to split the money equally until he can no longer continue. Then give the replacement what Bill would have earned. Problem solved. I still want to hear what they can do in the studio. Might not be great, but at least it will satisfy my "what if" curiosity.
  16. It's all turned into an effing mess. 2004 all over again... http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=275889
  17. She did not hurt anyone as far as I know. Many legendary musicians completely destroyed themselves, and they are still adored. History will be kind to her. Fantastic voice, my gosh.
  18. Yeah, I remember all of that. It was a sad reflection on our society here. How people can be so entrenched in beliefs based on superficial things is beyond me. Politics should be all about judging people on their actions and nothing else (how very naive of me, I know). To appeal to such a sensitive issue in this country for political gain is pathetic, no matter who does it. It's just this time, it is so plainly obvious.
  19. Really? You don't get it? He was voted in based on his promise for "change". This is more of the same. The title of his campaign and his skin color go together. It's simple psychology. Human's are not so evolved to be free from skin color preferences and alliances, whether they be raging or subconscious and/or minuscule. All it takes is some linguistic finesse and appeals to emotions (and a person with the same skin color), and you have a winning strategy. Don't tell me this was not planned down to the sentence structure in the speech. I don't like it, because it is so plainly divisive.
  20. What in the hell are you talking about with this post? I never lumped gun owners into anything. You mentioned gun owners and republicans in the same sentence, thereby implying that republicans are more likely to pander to gun owners. News flash, they are, because they are more lax on gun laws. As far as your "gun owners for Obama" and "African Americans for W" nonsense: you have it all wrong. If there is a market for bumper stickers, they will be made, period. You really think George Bush announced an "African Americans for Bush" campaign? He would have been crucified by the media as being disingenuous and racist by many. These stickers are being bought by individuals who agree with the candidates' values. Your Facebook example furthers my point. Ron Paul has not announced an "African Americans for Ron Paul" campaign. That page was written by someone or some people. And only 292 people care enough about it to even click the mouse to like it. None of that matters; however, because you missed my point entirely, so I will say it again in a different way: Generally speaking, politicians (ALL of them) pander to voters' values, whether they be social (foreign policy, abortion, entitlement programs, etc) or fiscal (wall street, tax structure, capital gains, budget cuts, etc). Rick Santorum is a MUCH different panderer than Ron Paul, but both of them appeal to people's values. Obama, with this new ad, is pandering to skin color. This is not some cheesy bumper sticker brought on my simple capitalism. This is our current president doing this. Oh sure, some people might object to that conclusion, but let's call it what it is: Obama wants Blacks to vote for him because he is black (half at that)... and he is using Black History month as a backdrop. I do not know why he is introducing skin color into the equation, since so many have fought to take out skin color in hopes they "will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." Now imagine if a white candidate announced a "Whites for _____" campaign...
