    AKG 701

The results of the SA5K out of a receiver are not suprising. My Marantz 1070 does a good job with high impedence headphones, but makes a sloppy, thick, syrupy mess of low impedence headphones. This is because the headphone jack has a high output impendence.

That doesn't seem like the SA5000 I'm used to. Of course, that doesnt mean something was wrong with yours.

    Pretzel Haiku

No pretzled bread, eh? I see you're a Churro Man. See you in hell, Bitch.
  4. Why does anyone use Quicktime, anyway? What advantages does the the format have?
  5. The sticker is great. It can only be taken as some sort of philosophical statement by someone who believes some deaths are not final. "This product can kill you, and if you believe in reincarnation or resurrection, you're wrong."
  6. The good thing about a politics board here though is that you can have discussions with people that don't take themselves seriously enough to post on a politics forum. I'm for it. I always enjoyed taking it outside -- except for the idiot scum bastards. I hate them, I tell you.

    AKG 701

I agree with a lot of this, and it's still too early for me to make any major judgment, but I do wonder whether jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none argument is a bit too strong. Going from memory, I'm pretty confident that I liked Edwood's R10s better. And I believe I may have liked the PS-1s, save for the overpowering bass, a bit better. But in the AKG's price range, I'm not so sure. If I was able to assemble a frankenstein headphone, I what it would be. I'm tempted to say the bass of the SA5000, which is exceptionally detailed and fast -- but it could use a touch more body, which the AKG has. Is there a headphone with mids that I like more. I'm not sure yet. Maybe the RS-1. I haven't A/Bed them yet or even tried to compare them in my mind -- but certainly the akg is no slouch. The highs? Again, though call. I don't really know. Still too early. Iron_Dreamer -- I'm curious, which headphones, or components of headphones, do you like better than the AKG?

    AKG 701

After several weeks, I finally received the 701s. They've have a bout 85 hours on them now I'd say. I'm really starting to enjoy them and their, nice, deep, but not overpowering, bass. I've been running them mainly out of the Prehead, but I'm happy to report that they sound great out of the Gilmore v1. The soundstage is extremely vast, similar to the CD3000, but I'm thinking not quite as exaggerated. Still, the soundstage seems a bit unrealistic, but not distractingly so.
  9. I fixed it. The lesson? Linksys routers blow.
  10. I really liked the Headroom Desktop when I heard it at the meet -- it's amazing all the upgrades you can get for it. I'm curious about the external powersupply. It can run 6 different amps? Why would you need that? Would it be possible to make a less expensive version that, say, only powers one?
  11. I tried my 4Ps last night with the Gilmore -- it sounded a lot better. The Gilmore has always been picky to my ears. With a lot of headphones, it sounds great, but with even more, it sounds awful. It seems to like lower impedence phones.
  12. I listened the Ety 4S last night with my Gilmore v.1 for more than I have in a while. Perhaps it is the Gilmore-ety combination, but the treble with a bit jaring and harsh to me. I may try my 4P with the Gilmore tonight and see if that works better. But I'm starting to believe that I may like an IEM with a bit less, or smoother, treble.
  13. When I was llving in NYC, I used my Etys all the time. They were great in the subway and walking to work. There was only one time that I almost got hit by bus. My other senses eventually compensated and everything was grand. Here in Ohio I don't have as much use for them, so I haven't been listening as much. I even experimented with a couple of close headphones, thinking that I would benefit from the easy of being able to take them on and off. I settled on the A900. Anyway, I tried the Etys again for a first time in a while and remembered how much they kick the A900's ass. Frankly, it's not even close. I've always been happy with the Etys, but my question to current or former Ety-lovers is whether they found that they liked any of the dozens of new IEMs available now and, if so, which ones?
  14. I read his book. Quite good. Very interesting.

    The IRS

I have to admit that the IRS is getting on my nerves a bit -- getting me just a little bit angry. Doing those things they do. I did my tax (or rather, had them done) early this year because we owed a little bit a of money last year, and I switched jobs last year, so I wanted to see where I was at in terms of taxes. As it turms out, because of various factors, I significantly overpaid, so I'm expecting what for me was a sizable refund. My taxes were electronically filed on 2/16. According to the IRS chart, I should have had my refund directly depositted last Friday. As of today, nothing. So I check online and find that the processing of my return has been "delayed," and that I should call to find out what is going on. Joy -- I get to talk with someone at the IRS. In short, I call, give a bunch of identifying information, explain the issue, and referenced the message I received on the website -- I'm put on hold for a couple minutes. When the operator comes back I'm told that there are checking whether there is liability for my wife because she didn't make estimated payments. I tell the lady that she did make estimated payments and that, had she not, since we filed jointly, it is very unlikely that I would be getting a refund. I'm put on hold for another few minutes. When she gets back she says that yes, my wife did make estimated payments and that for some un-understandable reason (at least to me) that I should expect my refund in "three cycles." I asked when that was. On hold again, for 5 minutes. Finally, I was told that my refund would be desposited by the end of month -- roughly a month after it should have been. I hope the government appreciates the loan. argh...
  16. What about hiring engineering students as contractors? Or perhaps engineering wouldn't be the best group to hit, but I bet there is such a labor supply out there.

    K701s

I'm of the opinion that once you heard a decent about of good headphones, you shouldn't be blown away by anything. At that point, you're after the subtler differences -- the more balanced sound, fewer flaws, etc.
  18. Are you looking for buds or will a small headphone do? Out of all the small portable headphones I've heard to date, I still like the PX100 the best. It's really the only one that didn't have glaring flaws to bug me.
  19. If you could spare me the pain of having to read about these stories in the press -- are we talking about credible sources or is there an avenue for denying it? Personally, I assume there's truth to the 'roids rumors, but this issue needs to opened up and cleansed.
  20. Each time I hear sacd lover's MPX, or Edipus's PPX Slam, I reall like them. But I pretty committed to not getting a tube amp because I pretty much don't want the tweakability a tube amp provides -- switching tubes, spending lots of money on NOS tubes, not being able to find tubes that sound exactly like what you had before, etc. I just know it would drive me a bit nuts. So.... Does Singlepower have plans or has it ever considered making a solid state amp?
  21. It pisses me off. It can be working find for months on end, then, all of a sudden, it decides to crap out -- not completely, mind you, but one aspect of it or another, with a particular device stops working. Can do you anything to fix that?
  22. His restaurant in Philly was AWESOME. And, at least when I was there, he would come out of the kitchen and talk to everyone. It seems like his Iron Chef personality was a put on.
  23. I'm hoping that the white on the AKG 701 is a delicious candy shell under which is either a nice silver or black matte finish.

    akg 701

I'm ordering a pair today. I liked them a lot listening on my setup, which I am quite familiar with. I figure this is the most important test, so I know I'll enjoy them. Oddly enough, I didn't like the Dynamite/701 setup -- this surprised me a lot. I generally like Gilmore amps a lot. I liked the Dynahi that I heard a lot, but more some reason the Dynamite/701 combination had an odd coloration to me. Perhaps it was the source, but I didn't like something in the chain. I'd be interested in a comparison, under ideal (QUIET), conditions between the HP-2s and the the 701... (hint hint)

Your modded CD3Ks?! Really?! If I recall correctly, my woody-modded and recabled CD3Ks sent him into nearly instant shrieks of pain. What is this, Bizzaro world?
