Fuglyphones have landed.
I spent the better part of an hour comparing the Audigy 2 to the Meridian G08. Mostly alone and in the room with no air con. The differences weren't 5 fold, nevermind 100 fold as the price difference would indicate. The Squeezebox should certainly be better than the Soundblaster and after a time with it, I'll go back and see if downgrading offers a more obvious reaction to my ears. If it does, then jolly D, and I'm left with a good unit to use as transport to an external DAC.

When do you consider an amp "high end"
Even at the highest price an Escort is still an Escort.

Upgraded my tape player. Squeezebox should arrive tomo morning. I went hugely digital source skeptic after the UK meet. And hugely pro-amp.

Ebay Insanity.
?140 and rising for a set of Micro Seiki electrostatics. Some people are clearly mad. I can only hope that Bidder 5 is a shill to get the price up and that the seller ends up paying ending fees for Bidder 5s winning bid. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=190172292479&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=009

Fuglyphones have landed.
Mine are enjoying a new sense of life from the Aleph M amp that arrived with me the other day, the problems in the sound I had are all gone. No more eBay amps for me ever. The Aleph also does a pretty good job of running them without the transformer, still no high SPL that way though. I've also got the new headband and have replaced the TR-2 socket and the TRS jack with the Neutrik connectors. If Head-Fi reappears then I'll append the review. The tweeter design was changed slightly on newer sets (group buy sets), I do not know if this made them any brighter as I do not have a revised set to compare with.

What are you smoking right now?
If I could grow one, I'd have one. Maybe I could glue the hairs from my legs onto my face, then biro hairs back on until they grow back...

What are you smoking right now?
22, 21 the last time I smoked one. My hairs grown since then too. *digs up photo* Gentlemen should be over 50 and have beards before they start smoking a pipe in public. Not that you can do so much of that now anyway, what with the public smoking ban now UK-wide.

I don't think I've smoked my pipe in more than a year, must be close to that since I had a good cigar too. Someone of my age and appearance smoking a pipe looks patently daft though.

Balanced amp on the cheap - suggestions anyone?
How were those K340 run from the speaker amps Boomana? Just a 4pin XLR termination and a tail? I only had the Ergo Amp1 when I had my K340s and it simply didn't have enough juice. If they can easily be run from a speaker amp I'd certainly give them another try.

Balanced amp on the cheap - suggestions anyone?
Ive never understood that. With headphone audio the advantages of balanced are in the difference it makes upon control over the driver, so it shouldn't matter a rats arse where the phase splitting takes place, amp or source, so long as its done properly wherever its done. For a lot of sources which have balanced outputs as an afterthought and just phase split a single ended signal for output, its probably better to leave the split until the amp.

When do you consider an amp "high end"
When the heatsinks are larger than the mechanicals.

Better to look at new frontiers with a more powerful telescope than a crappy pair of binoculars. Youll see further and better.
-
Balanced amp on the cheap - suggestions anyone?
For the K340 on that budget you would almost certainly be far better off getting as powerful a single ended amp as possible rather than trying to go balanced.

Balanced amp on the cheap - suggestions anyone?
Cheapest you're going to get is probably to DIY a balanced CMOY. Balanced amps aren't really known for being cheap.

Yuck? Philistine.- The Headcase Stax thread
If I had an HE60 I'd pay that 70 quid to be able to use my stax amp. If you don't have a better amp than the HEV70 though, then the motivation is lessened, but from the other side, would you put down for a better amp that you couldnt actually plug the headphones into? Bit of a catch-22. If you have a stax amp waiting though, then sell off a rare LP, a piece of furniture or a child and have alex work his magic. Or you could do it yourself of course...- Cheap DVD Player advice needed.
