  1. And the masses with their white $2 freebie headphones are going to heat what, exactly?
  2. The specs did confuse me a bit - they really are close. I'm happy to hear you used one with no heat or noise issues. If I can find the right case it might get me away from a top-side-only build a'la Cary Audio style. I do like the style, but already had a faceplate idea in my head that I wanted to work towards. Thanks for posting the picture, Nate. It clarifies your layout and just how close I can venture using this transformer. If I can create good ventilation, I might be in good shape. Breadboarding still might be a good idea before I drop everything in and find out, ah crap.... Cool, thanks!
  3. Interesting. Found this. "...Here in Oz we have no choice, it has to be the 370 DAX (240V mains) & this seems to be a different beast altogether. I'm running an EZ81, choke PS, 6H30 & ECC99's with regal's & amphead's mods & it never gets much above lukewarm. You can certainly leave your hand on it, even after several hours. I tend to listen at a more or less constant volume (fairly low) & haven't noticed any variation in transformer temp." So maybe the 370 would do fine with some reasonable venting if it really has to be in the case. I'll keep digging. (but that ignores the heat from the EZ81...crap)
  4. I might do that, Pars, and Ironbut mentioned that earlier as well. I am currently digging through the Bijou thread on the Fi to see if anyone has had any issues with noise.
  5. Since I already have the transformer, I'll probably just keep it and use it. I have no idea what else I could do with a 260-0-260 transformer. But it looks like my suspect of stray fields and the unrealized heat render that particular case not quite right. I'll poke around for something that is either more roomy or maybe even a dual-chassis design. Oy. Thanks!
  6. Interesting. Although I was thinking of having these all in the same plane, so the transformer would be inside the case with the rest of the components. Should I consider a larger case (or two-chassis design)?
  7. I'm finally going to get back to some DIY projects. One that's been boxed away is the Bijou. Part of the reason is I want to get a case design going in my head before I get too far on the soldering. And the problem with this is I really am not seeing the kind of case I was hoping for. Oh well. Onward. My last ditch effort will be to use a fairly boxy-shaped HiFi2000 case. It is 12.20 x 11.02 x 3.14. My main concern, and the question for y'all: with this layout, am I going to pick up any RF with the transformer so close to the two amp boards at the front of the case? They will be about 6" away from a Hammond 370DAX . Here's a pic of the case size. Thanks! Brian
  8. I'd have to agree. Watching him see and hear the music in his mind: wonderful.

    Need Some Help

done. "and usedowee" was my captcha code...Oy!
  10. Buddy Money Rivers. Sounds like I could be part of the back-up band for ol' Sticky Back.
  11. You would be 256 today. Impressive. I will celebrate today by listening to lots of symphonies and the Amadeus soundtrack.
  12. A case. Just a case. I read nattonrice's comments about the modushop/hifi2000 cases, and was thinking the same thing: cold rolled steel. Meh. I do like the smaller hifi2000 Galaxy cases, but need something bigger this time, like around the size of the 3U which is 16.9 x 11.8 x 4.72. Aluminum would be best, or at least mostly aluminum. Suggestions?
  13. Will be heading to the Seattle meet today. Main goal is to hear Doc B's PCM1704 DAC...hope he can bring the prototype he's hinted at. Otherwise, mixed feelings about this meet. The general disorganization of the Seattle group reigns supreme, yet nobody seems to care. Weird. I must be a picky bitch. Oh well, looks like some cool raffle items so maybe I'll luck out. http://www.head-fi.org/t/576440/seattle-meet-front-panel-express-1-21-2012 for reference.
  14. What a history, what a distinct voice, and what a mark she has made. RIP.
  15. We had some melt and refreeze yesterday. News last night had lots of trees down, including on the major highways. The power company estimated a quarter million without power. In spite of all that, my company is somehow open today so I get to hike to the bus stop again. Whee.
  16. I imagine this will be all we get this year. One good blast, then it's over like usual. Meh.
  17. It's been snowing in the Seattle area for five days now. Haven't been to work in two days (w00t!). Would've been fun yesterday, but a tree went down a block away due to the melting/refreezing. Took out a few hundred homes; Power was out for seven hours which made it a bit cold, but we had a gas fireplace on so temps on the main floor were 66. Not bad, eh? Now the rest of the area from Seattle all the way down to Olympia is getting more snow and power outages. Ha. Supposed to rain like a mofo tomorrow so all of this stuff will melt and the news people will bring "Floods of Death 2012" to the airwaves. I know, I know, not a big deal to many of you. I saw Nate post the other day that it was 5 one morning. Good lord.
  18. No, the reviewer did that himself. You must have missed this part from page 1: An audio forum without know-it-alls? This fantasyland you mention doesn't exist in the known world.
  19. Happy Birthday, spaceman!
  20. Happy Birthday fellow Capricorn!
  21. I'll buy some real shovels for the task
  22. Very cool. Carry ALL of your music. Little excuse now. WTF - the knife form-factor. 1TB Pocket SSD
