  1. The Handy is amazing, but you probably already know that.

  3. holy panasonic batman! I dunno, I'd guess veneered baltic birth for the front? who knows... There are five finish options available. this is on Harbeth's website: "It is true that real woods are used for the veneers, but looked at in the long-term, the logs that yielded those veneers have been put to the best possible use on Harbeth cabinets."
  4. I have a bit of experience in this area, as I have a local friend with two different Garrard 301 setups. I've compared two different Lenco builds, both of which came in at about half the 301 costs. I guess I prefer the Lenco sound, and it seems to be about a 60/40 split with others in the area that have heard both, in slight preference to the Lenco. It's hard to really characterize the differences though, where when I compare to direct drive setups for example it's an obvious across the board improvement. There are other areas to improve, that don't really see mainstream mention on the Lenco. I use a very sophisticated AC regeneration system that uses 3 phase power. I found this to be a very big improvement, as I don't have to worry about the quirks of varying the pulley diameter to do speed changes or even having to worry about European versus NA pulley diameters (perhaps pulley isn't the right word, it's the hourglass shaped metal piece that drives the idler). In the end, getting something sooner than later might be a valid concern. However, I really like the Lenco approach in replacing the top plate and isolating the motor. This is why I feel that the design really surpasses the Garrard "replinth". The mods really transform the Lenco, where the transformation is perhaps less so with the Garrard.
  5. Either that or they've done an acceptable job in marketing this as a differentiator to those that don't know better.
  6. that's a shame, MDF is much better for the task.
  7. if so, that's easy. You'll probably have to enlarge the holes, but easy enough Monkey if you need this done.
  8. Da Monkey: it depends on how thick the cabinets are. You might need an extra long version. I use both Cardas and Vampire. I use the later more these days, as they are cheaper and run about $25 for a stereo set (four binding posts) and are available in extra long versions. These are the short ones:
  9. For my upper level language classes I'd request a oral exam. Nothing like reading 100 lines of Virgil or Homer, but it was rather nerve racking..
  10. I get this. I cannot write for more than 30 minutes without getting my hand and my back into a horrible state.

  12. Any recommendation for something I can mount under a cabinet that would be effective for soldering and what not? It will be about 3-4 feet from the light to the work area. Something that is a flush mount with cords that come out of the side would be best.
  13. heh, in all seriousness, that's pretty damn impressive. I could however see Naaman pulling something like that off though
  14. I'd probably be more worried about the TLA "RBN" than the usual ones. Reason is simple: they pay better.
  15. wait, that's what you're doing for me, right?
  16. The guys you have to worry about won't be detected by AV anyways, so why bother?
  17. I'd test drive the Legacy GT and the A4 before doing anything. Both are good suggestions in my book. It seems that AWD is a requirement, but if not you might consider a used M3, which I have no idea if what you'd have to sacrifice in year or milage to get around $30K, but I cannot think of a more bang for the buck sports car period.
  18. wait, did they drop the spec.B nomenclature this year? I cannot find it on the website.
  19. Kevin, how deep are the knobs you've been making? I'm wondering if 3cm thick piece of material would make a decent knob, and not sure what proportions look right when I mock it up on the screen. I'd say something around 1" diameter and 1" deep is what looks decent, but just wanted to get another data point.
  20. Yeah, that's my next car as well, in 3 years or so..
  21. I'm under the firm opinion that IEMs are and will be the best closed can. Take it for what you will.
  22. Perhaps you can loan Nate a transport?
  23. Yeah, the removable center section of the middle seat was a really cool feature they added and perfect for kiddos having to hop into the third row without messing with the seats.
  24. We opted for the extension to 7yr/100K miles. Thanks guys, we considered a number of different vehicles and I'm not sure if anyone cares, but: Honda Pilot - didn't care for current body style, so was looking at the previous style. Ride quality was nearly dead last. It was very spacious though and the price was very competitive Hyundai Veracruz - seemed to be expensive for what you got. Drive was nice, just didn't have the fit and finish of the others. Salesperson was annoying Volvo XC90 - loved the look and drive and in the end we decided against it due to unknown cost of ownership and reliability and it was a tad smaller than what we were comfortable with. Mazda CX9 - dead last Buick Enclave - Liked it a lot, but seemed overpriced and didn't know if I wanted to own an American car Acura MDX - Probably second choice. Ride was very nice and very well appointed, just a tad outside our price range. I didn't like that only half of the second row would allow entry into the third row. Chevy Traverse - meh Subaru Tribeca - really wanted to own another Subaru, but just too small when compared with the Pilot and others.
