^ True, it's for that reason that iPods and K701s go hand in hand together. Btw, proofreading should be in your interest. IMO.

Goooo Birgir! Sounds like my kind of O2. If you mod a pair and bring it to CanJam I'd be very interested in hearing it.

Looks like the O2 is still a touchy subject. I think there is something fundamentally aggressive about the ET1000 sound that is very atypical of 'stats. It may smooth out a bit with thicker circumaural pads but I don't have any on hand that are the right size. I will reserve these for hard rock/metal until I think up another mod. It also does simpler things very well, and barely passed my Lovefool test. Perhaps upping the bias to normal bias will have the change I am looking for.

Just because a badly recorded album sounds unbearable on one headphone and not unbearable on the other does not mean it is more revealing. IMO.

It's only the beginning of February. We've had freak snows in April before, and we're not exactly very far north. Thankfully it only ended up being 3-4" or so, so shoveling this time around was reasonably quick.

I admit to having a bit of 4070 lust... Modded the ET1000 some more. Replaced the thick stock cotton damping with some thin craft felt, and used the same stuff as a layer right up against the outer screen. Which btw is really heavy, seems kind of like metal. Weird. I also fully ripped off the really thin fabric over the drivers. Some of the insane speed is back but it's not bright anymore. I remember someone mentioning something about treble impact. This has it. It also now has boatloads of bass.

Congrats!

And then the Texas crew say the one they heard is more laid back in the treble like an HD650. Definitely seems like some huge variation in sound going on here.

Yup that's my impression. Trying to show that she can't not dress up, addiction, mental illness, blah blah blah.

Good excuse, traffic + any precipitation drives me nuts. I can't stop picturing a colon between the > and 3. >:3 "My" car broke down two weeks ago and my parents haven't bothered getting it fixed so I'm not able to easily commute, anyway.

F**king snow always ruins my plans. And somehow manages to pick the days it can most screw me over.

Well shit on my face and call me Shirley. I think I've found the headphone (with a couple of others to switch things up). Started this long and harrowing journey with a K501 and have come 'round full circle back to what I should have upgraded to in the first place.

Heh, I may have to end up doing that with the drivers on the Lambda Sig I'm getting so that ought to be fun. More likely than not I'll just end up destroying the drivers. Yeah, ripping the dustcover would definitely be bad, though it is sort of replaceable if it does get torn. That may affect the sound, though... good luck with straightening it out. I'm sure Birgir will have a tip or two.
-
Are you fully refurbing your Lambda? It's a really good headphone so it'll be worth it in the end, but that sucks.

Nice. I think if I ever saw a W2002 to in person my pants may develop a wet spot. Same with that Lundahl iron, so my idea of sexy may be a little off. 2 NC3MX-B, 3 NC4MX, 3 NC4FX, 1 NP3C-BAG for me. Stupid non-matching colors, but whatever.

Thanks to the both of you! Yup I don't think there's going to be much difference if any but I'm a fairly curious person in general.
-
You mean nickel plated, right? And as I said before, compared to properly damped orthos the K340 and K1000 don't really need as much output power. They still probably need more than most other headphones, but I don't know firsthand since I don't own any anymore. Maybe the lightly oxidized bare copper wires going into the speaker outs makes a difference in sound.

The K1000 is missing in the low bass but it's flat down to 50Hz on my receiver and can probably improve a bit with better amplification. It's true, I never understand what people were on about with lack of bass on Stax. On the other hand, people don't really understand the concept of most dynamics not really resolving much of anything in the bass. ^ I'm pretty much one of these fanboys. That Yamaha amp sounds suspiciously like the TOTL version of my CR-620, which is also an NS series... It wouldn't happen to be a CR-2020, CR-3020, CR-2040 or the like, would it? Or it might have been one of the really cool ones, like the CA-2010 which has a Class A switch.
-
That's another thing I forgot to mention. Dynamics are awesome and so is impact. These drivers can move a lot of air! Completely unrelated, but on the issue of comfort it's by far the most comfy of my headphones because my ears tend to sweat with sealed pads and hurt like crazy with supraaural pads or thin circumaural pads after awhile. I have the temple pad mechanism out one click on each side which evens out pressure. Tried two clicks but felt like the driver wasn't positioned correctly, but will experiment more with that, along with toe in. Ooh, which vintage Yamaha? I also use one, a CR-620 from the late '70s. Decent class AB amp with a pretty flat and transparent sound.
-
That was actually a somewhat popular donor frame or just the earpads for orthos for awhile. I'd get one just to stick a pair of SFIs in but knowing me it wouldn't actually get done until summer or so.

Great write up! You pretty much covered everything I wanted to know/was curious about except how the K1000 sounded out of your JFET amp. No biggie, I will hopefully find out soon. Not lifeless honesty sounds great. Strange about the 404LE fit, if it's anything like the vintage Lambdas or even the SR-202 and SR-404 I tried it shouldn't have been too difficult to find a good fit. I think Birgir said the 404LE pads are a bit thinner than normal so that might've been the problem. I'll definitely keep the notes about the BH treble and the Exstata amps in mind when I decide what 'stat amp to build.
