Hey guys, I was just invited to a concert by the pianist of the ATOS Trio who I personally know, and just wanted to let you guys know the dates and cities they're touring. February 12 New York, NY February 14 San Antonio, TX February 16 Cincinnati, OH February 17 Cerritos, CA February 19 Carmel, CA February 20 San Diego, CA February 21 Mill Valley, CA Program: Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy - Trio No.2 in c-minor, op.66 Gaspar Cassado - Trio in C-Major Franz Schubert - Trio No.2 in Eb-Major, op.100 The best chamber group I've heard live. The pianist is stunning, and the best accompanist I've ever had the pleasure of working with by far. I've heard the Guarneri Quartet who were in residency at my school and have even been coached by most of the members in it but caught them in their last few years, and they just disbanded. I'm going to try to make it to the NY one at Carnegie, Weill Recital Hall.

Ooh, are you moving onto speakers now as well? It's only a matter of time, really... well, and space. And funds.
-
Yeah there's that, too. Actually, I pretty much don't. Even sonatas are very hard because they share an equal role with the piano, so it's really only possible to learn solo stuff and concertos (but not really) on my own. Life sucks for instrumentalists who aren't pianists.
-
Hm, they both kick ass and are by Schubert? They were written in contrasting periods of his life, though. I want to play both pretty badly, but I kind of need the rest of the chamber group to do so.
-
I like it a lot, too. I think it's time for some Death and the Maiden now.

I wonder if they can be put in a Lambda shell.. But nah, once I took out the foam and the plastic circle things it got a lot less echoey and it's pretty much fully open now so the stock enclosure should be fine. I think I might play around with the stock damping (the thick wad of felt and tissue paper) and swapping caps. Not sure I'd go as far as just removing them.
-
Ooh, very nice score! I definitely need to hear a Sigma Pro or Sigma/404 someday.
-
You removed them? What exactly do they do, along with the resistors? Are the resistors just bleeders?
-
I would've liked it for my ESP10, just for the sake of having the complete set. But I've already lopped off the stock plug so it's too late to go back. I'd have been interested in any insights on modding you might've developed, other than using O2 pads. I know the SR-5 pads work and I hear the Denon pads also work, both being a cheaper option. Those JMoney Denon pads look interesting as well.
-
You wouldn't happen to have the ESP10 also laying around, would you?
-
It's pretty middling in the grand scheme of things, technically. I think I'll listen to a recording of it now, though, after I finish this Thievery Corporation.
-
Great that you enjoy the HE-5 so much and your description of the treble matches what I heard well. I'm definitely going to buy one of the new orthos next year--by which there may be some newer new orthos out and about--once my self-inflicted headphone purchase ban is lifted. If there is a QC issue it will hopefully be resolved by then. Did you mean that it is very taut? It certainly isn't very bassy and muddy like some stock orthos are.
-
According to Sienna Miller on Top Gear, that would actually be tits down.
-
bjarnetv, awesome job refurbing your ESL-63 and awesome avatar! Mind elaborating on the modding? You know how we orthoists are. Modding for us is analogous to moths to flame.

They're saving that for the JH24 ($2000) and the UE28 ($2400)

I'm not gonna lie, the picture with the K240 and the other one with the R10 are somewhat intimidating.
-
Not sure about a scratchy sound but if it's buzzing then it's some dust that has lodged in somewhere it isn't supposed to.
-
Thanks! Hopefully Ari's okay with that as well.

So is there any way a poor college kid can bum off one of you in regards to hotel rooms? I am very used to sleeping on floors, chairs, benches, etc.
-
You're right, I am a dick and a softie underneath it all, which make me flaccid. Happy birthday!

More tensioned drivers need more power for the same amount of excursion. I'm not really sure how to measure 'control' other than I guess damping factor, depending on what it is referring to. dBel, I think you're right about the LCD1 and HE5 as well since that's what it sounded like to me. The resonant frequencies are of course typically much lower on orthos because the diaphragms are much thicker. The 5-7kHz is a bit of a mystery to me since even though there is a reflex dot of sorts on the backs of every HE5 I did not hear that peak. Again, if only the HE5 could be opened up to be modded...
-
Less tension = more bass and resonant frequencies, which makes sense in the 404 since there's a bass hump and an upper mid/lower treble peak. More tension does the opposite, obviously. Less bass, less resonance. It also is harder to drive, but more linear with faster decay.

I think they may require a trip to a certain K340 guru/displaced Alaskan sometime in the near future. I actually don't mind the comfort at all on my K340, even though it is a bit heavy (neck_muscle_strength++; ) and the elastic bands are a bit loose. My ears don't get hot nearly as much as they do with other headphones. But are you saying the velours don't make much difference in sound other than decrease of bass impact? I thought they would shift the response closer to the treble.. Oh, and I've already modded my K340 up the wazoo.
