Monster MCC AVL300 remote with IR blaster, to replace the one I dropped and broke. Yeah, if I'm not denting iPads, we're breaking screens left and right. My other remotes are Logitech, but this one I can control the gear inside of a closed cabinet.

I picked up my daughter's repaired iPhone 3GS where they moved the good screen, battery and vibrate button from my dead iPhone to her busted one (her vibrate button went flakey after it was dropped for the hundredth time). As a bonus, they got the previously dead phone up and running as an iPod Touch with GPS (although using an old battery and cracked screen), for $65 total cost for both phones. I didn't want to spend an extra $99 for new glass just yet since it wont work as a phone. I put a screen protector on to prevent any cuts from the glass, and I'm weighing my options such as doing the glass myself for 1/3 the cost. It works just fine as a 32Gb music server via a Nuforce digital iPod dock with Coax S/PDIF out.

I think the CEntrance DACmini is a really great sub $1K DAC with a very nice sounding 24/96 USB input, as well as optical and coax S/PDIF. The included headphone amp is also pretty darn good for the price, and it sounds great with my LCD-2, HE-500, ES3X, ES5, JH13Pro. I have the stock gain of 8 and the stock output impedance is 10 ohm, but you can special order these with a gain of 10 or an optional 1 ohm output impedance. (I'd worry that a gain of 10 might be too high for IEM.) I'd guess that the DACmini via USB is on a similar level of performance to the Apogee mini-DAC with Sigma 11 feeding a maxed Woo WA6, but for a lot less money. I thought the Stello DA100 or PS Audio DLIII had good USB performance (Stello not so much with up-sampling turned off when using USB), but I preferred the Apogee. If I didn't need XLR outputs I think I would still pick the DACmini over those. It's too bad they don't make the Apogee with USB input anymore, but it was limited to 24/48 and the Firewire version does 24/96. The Pico DAC-only seems to perform very well as USB DAC if you are willing to give up S/PDIF, and you could investigate the DACport LX which is a portable DAC with 24/96 USB and a 1/4" line out and no internal amp (like the Pico). Again, I'd still pick the DACmini over these, unless portable under $400 was my target. I haven't compared this to something like the Lavry DA11, which is a little above your budget, but maybe others can chime in. -
PS: I'll double check if Blutarsky is still staying with me and my son, and if not then I'll have space for you. I should know by tomorrow.

Holy Crap! The New Stax Omega Looks fierce! (Stax SR-009)

I had a pair of SR-5NB with the kettle cable and one with the ribbon cable at the same time, and I thought they sounded pretty much the same. I only kept the ones with ribbon cable when I sold the other pair because of aesthetics, not sound. -
I can't stop watching it.

I've been at "Mr. Biggs Family Fun Center" all day with my son, his friend and their two German exchange students. They're running me ragged. I'm too old for this. Only two more hours to go and I can take them home and catch my breath. Then we have to go to the Cheyenne Mounain Zoo and Garden of the God's park tomorrow. Just waiting for pizza and soda now.

After your post I got a clue and canceled the Apple Genius appointment, and plan to get the screen and the newer battery from the spare dead phone installed into her cracked phone at a local shop on Monday. I confirmed it will only be $35 and they'll need the phone for two days. In October I am getting an iPhone 5 and my wife wants my iPhone 4, and then we'll have her old 3GS as a spare iPhone again. They do come in handy. The cracked screen still works and I put a screen protector on to keep it from cutting her. I found an old unlocked Sony 810i candy bar phone that I got in 2008 and I can move her SIM to that while they fix her iphone. She was very agreeable to this, and felt bad that it fell out of her pocket while she was doing sports med training at a school soccer game - she was rushing through the parking lot with arms full of water for the players and couldn't catch it before it hit the ground. As a note, when the kids got iPhones 18 months ago, they all paid for them by selling their old iPod videos and Nanos and from their savings. We made them get the cheaper 16gb versions as well. We switched from verizon to ATT when my wife's work started reimbursing her for her smartphone and ATT gives us 24% off as a corporate discount. Although they stopped paying for my wife's phone this month we still get the 24% off.

Well, my daughter isn't eligible for an upgrade to an iPhone 4 or 5 at the usual $199/$299 price point, at least not for another 6 months. She'd have to pay as much as $499 for an early iphone upgrade before February and I wouldn't do that. But Apple has had a policy for a while where some cracked screen phones can get replaced for $199 when you aren't eligible for an upgrade. They did that for us about a year ago. If she didn't have to wait 6 months I'd not spend the money to fix it now. So, I can leave the house in 45 minutes for the only Apple genius appt that was open today, and pay them $199 to replace it now, which would make my daughter very happy. Or, she can use the broken phone till monday and then be without it for 3 more days while the other local repair shop gets around to replacing the screen with the parts from my dead phone, for under $50. Also, so far ATT does let you upgrade hardware and keep your unlimited plan, at least for now. What I'm not sure of is if I fix this phone on the cheap, in 6 months when she can sell her phone to get a new one is there really going to be much increased re-sale value for a 2 year old unlocked jailbroken 3GS over the value of a 6 month old 3GS that isn't jb and unlocked? iOS 5 will be out then, and people will more likely want iPhone 4 or 5, and they can buy a 4 already unlocked. [edit, now that i think of it, I might even keep the old phone as a spare when she upgrades in 6 mo, since I've needed a spare a few times in the past and my current spare is dead]

So, my 16 year old kid broke her iPhone 3GS glass screen today. Despite using a rubber case the glass contacted a small rock in the school parking lot. When the same thing happened a year ago we paid the Apple store $199 to replace the phone. This time I have a dead iPhone 3GS sitting here that we can use as a donor phone for the screen, if I can figure out how to do that (it's out of warranty). I think a local shop will do the swap for about $35, and maybe it will continue to serve her until she's eligible for an upgrade in 6 months. However, she complains that the mute button is too sensitive and if bumped the phone vibrates, making her think she has a call or a text when she doesn't. She's hoping for a new phone so that issue goes away too, and it would be faster if Apple will replace the phone this weekend at a discount. She's a good kid and works hard, and I don't want to stress her out over this. What would you guys do? The cost is only a part of the issue. There's also the issue of losing the jailbreak with a new phone (iOS 4.3.5 jailbreak is still tethered), but the only jailbreak app she uses is My3G which lets her update apps or download videos that are larger than 20mb over 3G. Another issue is that we'd end up with a lower resale value since a new phone can't be unlocked yet (I'm sure an untethered jb will come out for the current version of iOS, but the unlock is much less certain).

That's so sad.

Wayne, when I would take naps at work while my CPAP was at home I found that I could sleep on my stomach on the couch in my office, with my face aimed outward away from the couch, and I could get air well enough to breath and sleep and feel somewhat rested. I think I was mostly mouth breathing and drooling, but it worked. I think that position not only keeps the airway open a little better, but it improves chest wall compliance for breathing. Hope you get this sorted out soon!

Birgir, since I still prefer my HE-60 slightly over my SR-007 (even with my KGSS), would you think it's a safe bet that I'd be happiest selling my WES and SR-007 to help raise the $5,000 that I'd need to buy the SR-009? Or do you think a better amp like a BHSE for the SR-007 might be smarter? i.e. if you had a KGSS level amp with SR-007 and could only spend $5K, would you upgrade the phones or the amp? Maybe you could try the SR-009 with your worst amp and see if they still hold up well? -
Cloning Windows 7 to new HD
HeadphoneAddict replied to TheSloth's topic in GoRedwings19's Computer Help Hotline
Do you have more than 120Gb of data on the 500Gb drive, so that you can't use partition magic to make it small enough to clone to the 120Gb? Maybe you could clone the 500Gb to another 500Gb, then delete everything that you don't want to go onto the 120Gb SSD, then re-partition the new 500Gb to a smaller matching size, and then clone the remainder onto the SSD? (or likewise just move all the extra files to another drive as an archive, and delete them from the original which you will re-size) I haven't cloned a Windows hard drive in a long time, but I own Acronis True Image software, and wonder if that might do the trick for you for moving down to a smaller drive. You could do some research into the new features of the 2012 version. http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/?mid=4284&lid=2&uid=108688 -

Apple replaced our iPad1 under Applecare (changed our data account and could not get the old sim out), so now I'm restoring my wife's data and apps to the refurbished one. It came with iOS 4.3.3 so we can jailbreak it at jailbreakme.com but I wont be able to restore to 4.3.3 if there are issues. Got to visit briefly with Tyler at the Apple store, but he was busy with customers so no beer this time around.
