As usual I'm at a disadvantage as I never seem to be in the right place to hear the gear I'm interested in. I've pretty much ruled out tube amps (yes, they sound wonderful) due to the placement of the amp in conjunction with where i sit. It's a heat issue. So solid state it is. Wondering if anyone here has has the pleasure of listening to both of these fine amps and can share their respective strengths/weaknesses. YES, I know the GSX can accomodate balanced cans. Yep, I realize alot of folks have not heard the P1. If it matters I'll be feeding it with the Bel Canto Dac3. Any other options I should be considering at this price point? BTW, I know I can order both and return the one(s) I don't care for. I'm trying to avoid that. I'm getting too old for the hassle. Your help is appreciated.

Glad to hear you've got the immediate situation under control. Broke my ribs last February. Very uncomfortable and no wonder you didn't sleep much. Hard to find pain free way to lay down. Hope all goes smoothly from here ... and get checked out at your earliest opportunity.

The DT880 ('05) is a nice can, but it does have that sparkling treble that can be fatiguing. I also find the mids to be somewhat recessed. A nice alternative in the $200-$300 range would be the AKG K601. Although it is not an exciting can (ala Grados) it has a nice organic sound with surpisingly good bass. Mids are almost on par with the K501 as well as the soundstage. This is a good all rounder often forgotten about in the AKG lineup IMHO.

Up until yesterday (yes, the last day of January, '09) we only had 6 HOURS total of above freezing temperatures for the entire month of January. Thats only 6 out of 720 hours above freezing for one day shy of an entire month. Since the wet snow off Lake Michigan generally feezes before I get home from work to remove it, I now have the fun job of removing the frozen snow/ice layer that has been growing on my driveway. At least with temps at or above freezing the job amounts to more than removing ice blocks. Did about 1/3 of the drive yesterday and another 1/3 today. Almost done:)

Two of us had the DX-1000 available at Saturday's meet. Most there enjoyed them. A couple heard "resonance". I do not. I have not heard another closed can that I like better, and I need a closed can part of the time. I find their toe tapping presentation fun and relaxing.

My first meet. Lucky to have the opportunity to listen to 3 orhtodynamics including a garage sale HP-1 rescue that was modded with felt, a D5000 cord and new pads...amazing sound. Otherwise I was pretty overwhelmed.

You probably don't mean it this way, but I'm reading this to mean neither dac is neutral, especially the ECD-1 describing it as "more romantic/dramatic". If we agree the dac is to reproduce the music as recorded then anything it adds takes away from neutrality, although it can be quite musical and still sound wonderful.

6 degrees with out windchill this morning. Went to put the dog out. He stuck his nose out the door, did an about face and hightailed back into the house. Apparently he is smarter than I am as I went out and went to work instead of staying home.

I had three DACs on my short list. The two you'll be comparing and the Bel Canto DAC3, which I purchased. I'm looking forward to your comparo. Hopefully I won't regret my choice!
