I was thinking about buying some Sennheiser HD 650's, adding the Moon Audio Silver Dragon, and an Apogee Duet. Source is either iPad mini streaming FLAC via subsonic or JRMC on my macbook pro. Nice and portable, suitable for desk, lots of multi-use options. Thoughts?

Anyway, if you mean the current duet that works with the ipad, try it and see, and report back.  It seems like it should work reasonably well.  I'd go HD600 instead of 650 if you're not adding an external amplifier, tho.  As to the cable, some people enjoy spending money that way...
