October 10, 200817 yr I'll start. For an everyday bourbon this is one of my favorites. Good flavor and a very reasonable price.
October 10, 200817 yr I'm a big fan of Old Forresters for an inexpensive sipper. Bites like a bourbon should. I also like overholdt's rye.
October 10, 200817 yr Everyday: Knob Creek Bourbon Occasional: Booker's Bourbon Special Occasion: Black Maple Hill Rye 23 yr That said, I guess I should admit that I have a bottle of Woodford Reserve in my office, and with that I will have a small tot.
October 10, 200817 yr Author looks like morphsci's pic and mine are from the same guy Yep, that's where I borrowed my image.
October 10, 200817 yr Author I'm a big fan of Old Forresters for an inexpensive sipper. Bites like a bourbon should. I had a small run-in with some (actually quite a bit of) Old Forresters in college. To this day I try to stay away from it. So I would say it does have some bite, 30+ years I think I'll look for the van Winkle and maybe some Maple Hill tomorrow in C-U.
October 10, 200817 yr Since I like wheaters, I like W.L. Weller and the prices are a fucking steal. --
October 10, 200817 yr Black Maple Hill Rye 23 yr i've tried a few bourbons and from what has been mentioned the knob creek and woodford are a little better than just ok to me, but the BMH Rye 23 yr is exceptional -- so far it's gotta be my favorite bourbon. now i am itching to get my hands on Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve 20 yr. though, i need to hold off as i've went a bit crazy acquiring scotch.
October 11, 200817 yr Author You guys do realize that in the south, bourbon and rye are not interchangeable. This was learned from bitter and painful experience.

Yikes!
October 11, 200817 yr that stuff does ok in punch, sure. I hadn't had it in a glass in years as I normally use it for cooking. So I had a small glass last night. It's really not bad at all and quite good for the price. Of course it won't stand up to the premium brands being tossed about it, but it's about $12/btl. Since I like wheaters, I like W.L. Weller and the prices are a fucking steal. Rebel Yell is a wheater made from the original W.L. Weller recipe. I'll have to try the Weller too and see how it compares. $110/bottle.... Yikes! It's under $100/btl at Beverage Warehouse. An absolute steal! I'm going to buy a bottle anyway.

October 11, 200817 yr I fully agree that Rye and Bourbon are two different whiskeys, but I did not think that this thread would exclude Rye. As for Booker's, I really like the flavor, which is oaky and only slightly smokey, and the bite is special. They say it is the only uncut, unfiltered, straight-from-the-barrel bourbon and it really does have a complex, changeable flavor. It is also the highest alcohol level available, which increases the thrum.
October 11, 200817 yr A great bargain in bourbon is Van Winkle 12 year Lot "B". I believe it's no more than $40 a bottle.

October 11, 200817 yr Thanks for mentioning this one, I think this will be my next bottle to try out It's good stuff. I know grawk is a big fan as well.
October 11, 200817 yr It's good stuff. I know grawk is a big fan as well. Now to find some will be the trick, the local Bevmo does not seem to have it. GRAWK!!!!!!
October 11, 200817 yr Elmer T Lee is my go to, generally, and it's not terribly expensive. Elijah Craig is good, too. These two are available locally. Looking for a step up from the Woodford?
October 11, 200817 yr Author ..., but I did not think that this thread would exclude Rye. Absolutely not, I appreciate the rye recommendations. I just wanted to make sure we did not fluster the sensibilities of any of our Southern brethren.
October 11, 200817 yr what is it about Woodford that you want to upgrade? I don't know. I guess its like audio, if I taste it I will know...
