  • What the fuck kind of books are you guys reading that require study guides and devoting years of your lives to? I am reading Russka by Edward Rutherford and I have not had to hire a support staff

  • Seems like a good day to start a biography of Pliny the Elder and  Younger that Claire got for me at Christmas.

Another just OK.

Really liked this. Apocalypse version of Old Man & the Sea, basically.

This book messed me up. Loved it. Trying to expand beyond sci-fi/fantasy, science, and travel books.

Currently reading On The Road but I don't really know why. I guess I hope it will all fall into place, but I have the nagging fear that I will get to the end and just be left with emptiness

You're not reading on the road for plot or great meaning are you?

I guess I'm doing it wrong, but yea I like those things.

Spaulding Gray's better 'Impossible Vacation' was my gateway to accepting 'On the Road,' but in reality there just better Beat and of course other, writing out there. Echoing Grawk, I wouldn't beat yourself up if 'On the Road' doesn't hit. Now if 'The Road' doesn't hit we can talk.

Just finished:

I liked Oryx & Crake so much I read the sequel.

I enjoyed it very much as well.

Good to hear. Read the concurrent sequel, so now have to hit Crake. In fact recommended The Handmaid's Tale to my mother yesterday.

There is a 3rd book titled: MaddAddam: A Novel due out later this year.

Last Call was excellent albeit more mainstream fantasy than his others. Less mindbending.

You didn't find redemption and the fisher king stuff mind bending? All the poker magic, and the magical roots of Las Vegas?
