  7. RIP Patrick Stewart at 86.
  8. I had Ubuntu on my old Toshiba laptop (12+ yo) i5. And it borked during the new update, making it unbootable. I was looking at getting the new version as a download and reinstall from USB, and I thought I would look at other options at the same time. Since it was going to be a full install anyway, I thought it wouldn't hurt to try something new. https://linuxmint.com So I gave Mint a try. Super easy install, it grabbed drivers and media codecs. I was able to install the handful of apps I need/use. And was up and running within the hour. It has been stable and slightly faster. Does it have all the power and the tools as Ubuntu? no, but for surfing and running youtube vids as I fall asleep, works just fine. I have not converted my main rig (MSI) off of Win11 yet. I have a lot of tools and programs that I need to research before making that leap. But happy to report that Linux really is an option for an older machine.
  9. Meanwhile, making compact casssettes in Japan:
  10. Modern tech with vintage looks, Ruark R710 all in one system, basically, hook up a pair of speakers and you have everything. Heard it at an audio show a couple weeks ago and was surprised that an under $10k setup was one of the top 5 rooms at the show, it embarrassed the shit out of many mega-buck systems. Yes, it also plays CDs. If I had room for speakers, I'd be totally happy with this setup.
  11. The Revox & the Lampizator are interesting "bookends" to the overall thread. The former being how Lukasz started out, soldering DIY tubed output-stages to older TDA154x-based CD players, and the latter being his uber-expensive current offerings. Not sure if that was planned or not, but...touche' 👍 Can't comment on the latest Lampizator retail products, other than I think I've heard some models once or twice at meets over the years, and they sounded good in those specific instances. I've also heard Chord-based systems that sounded good under similar circumstances too.

  16. Nice! I haven't been loving Tracey's "changed" voice on some of their newer stuff, but this song is pretty good!
  17. Not to many of these being built anymore, I built this from Mjorin kit, parts are getting difficult to find. Works and sounds great . Bill
  18. New MBPs look... fine I guess? Hardware prices are bonkers right now, but that isn't Apple's fault. I don't know... I was expecting a little more of a visual refresh to get excited about. Also why can't I have a cellular modem in my laptop? I know I can tether to my phone, but I'd rather, you know, use the device with the big battery. Ipad has them so why not mac? Wonder why they launched them now because I have no interest in the M5 versions. I'll wait for the M7 next year or consider jumping ship if something more compelling in the PC ecosystem comes along. RTX Spark gen 1 isn't it, but who knows what else is coming. I'm more outside the "walled garden" than ever these days, so they need to win decisevly on hardware to keep me coming back for more.
  19. Ok, so Ima resurect this from the dead as I can remember the impressive pics in my head. I've built up a vinyl collection and have preamp kit but have no turntable. There is a used U-Turn Orbit 1st gen that needs a belt at the flea market for $200. For another $150 on top of that I can have a new one with the 2nd Gen arm and either a Grado Green stylus or the Iso feet. Or $399 for both with a que lever. Now, I could do a Technics SP-15 or 25 build but total cost on that build would be $1000 minimum just to get something out of it. So, if I'm gonna spend that, are there any diy options that could yeild better results? I have access to a cabinet shop so I can have wood cut for a plinth and other things. I like the builds that have the motor seperate for better isolation. All that being said I have no idea where to start and could only think of this thread.

  22. Sorry to be so retro, but anyone else going to upgrade to 27 and then disable Siri/AI?
  23. They sell a ton of these to pilots. You put them on a knee board and it's perfect for displaying charts/approaches etc. and with a pencil you can jot down complicated ATC clearances. The biggest ask for a couple of years has been a brighter screen, so we'll see if the OLED is a step forward. Some folks will even mount them on the control yoke as an additional flight control display, although the FAA officially frowns on this.
  24. And Now there's the iMac's and MacBooks with M6 Power! Spec Bump? Price Bump! $4K, Nice? They may announce a Touch Screen Tomorrow.
  25. Lampazitor is such utter crap, almost as bad as Chord. Fucking hate that garbage.
