  1. Today
  2. Late condolences, Steve. Can’t really even imagine. I’m so very glad that you were able to speak with her and were able to get some closure.
  3. Wrapped up vacation in FLAlalala. Travel back tomorrow, weather permitting (we’re already getting warnings) and hopeful that kids won’t go too mental about departing 85 and sunny for 50 and rainy.
  4. A Long, Hard Look at America https://www.newyorker.com/culture/critics-notebook/a-long-hard-look-at-america https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2025/feb/12/rijksmuseum-amsterdam-american-photography “For them the big names – Edward Weston, Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Richard Avedon – they are part of the history of the country, they are part of the image culture of the country, and for them these names are the same as Rembrandt and Vermeer for us Dutch.”

  6. The Stone Roses debut came out today in 1989. I still think it's in the conversation for albums that don't have a single bad moment on them?
  7. A commenter on Imgur thought the trombonist was Tyree Glenn as well. Also the system was stereo and was set up to record. It was installed at the request of Lucille Wilson while Satch was in the hospital. https://virtualexhibits.louisarmstronghouse.org/2020/07/31/louis-armstrongs-1969-1971-tapes-reels-1-5/
  8. Well the first two color images had to be taken after 1970 as the album pictured in those two, Swingin’ the Louis Armstrong SongBook by Swing Society with Nannie Porres, was recorded in 1970. Anyway, John Thomas also played trombone with the Louis Armstrong band after replacing Kid Ory and was playing on tour with Armstrong in the 60s.
  9. Tyree Glenn? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyree_Glenn
  10. Some trumpet player or other with his home hi-fi (I'm not sure it was stereo) in the late 1960s. Photo most likely taken by Jack Bradley. I'd love to know the identity of the trombone player. Google has, and I want to be clear about this, utterly fucking useless in this regard.
  11. Sorry to hear Steve. You have a virii sibling in Esmé who just tested positive for mono. Their IG is like a crime scene of food sharing photos and videos.
  12. I've had covid twice now. It was just a stuffy nose. As far as I know I've never had the flu. Colds are also just a stuffy nose. I never get the aches people talk about. However, whatever this is it's really kicking my ass! I feel like I've been hit by a train. I ache all over, I can hardly breath, I'm coughing and my eye sockets are sore, if that makes any sense at all. If this is what normal people go through I'm so sorry for that. I had no idea! This is going to sound completely stupid and nonsensical, but in a weird way it's making me feel closer to my Mom. She sounded like I now feel, and it just makes me empathize more. Maybe I'm just delirious. I'll get through this just fine, but I will be a bit more patient when someone is complaining about their flu symptoms.

  14. So sorry for your loss Steve. As others have said, mother-sons bonding is very real. It was nice that you were able to speak with her.
  15. It’s such a cool venue.
  16. Jill Sobule died in a house fire(!) She made the good song called "I Kissed A Girl" I vividly remember it from 1995, which was about the last year I liked pop music. That was before the 1996 Telecommunications Act passed, allowing Clear Channel to own fucking everything and ruining radio (and therefore music) forever. UH I MEAN what a catchy folk pop tune.
  17. Last week
  18. I picked up tickets to see Los Lobos and X at the Ryman this fall. Unless I sneak to some show there before then, it'll be my first trip to the church of country music (and to see a punk band, no less)
  19. Got to see my favorite band the Chameleons once again. Met up with a few elderly folks like myself, and our conversations were focused around our ailments as old-folks-discussion SHOULD be! 😄 The band were also wrapped in dark Goth bands - they were the 3rd of 4 bands. I don't mind a little bit, but even the two opening bands got to be too much for me. After the Chameleons played, I went home; the headliner (Twin Tribes) are VERY Goth and not what I cared to hear. I e-chatted with one of the other cranky old people yesterday, and he and I agreed that the sound and the band's performance was not quite as good as it has been in the past. But I also watched the set with another couple, and while we agreed the sound wasn't the best we just let loose and thoroughly enjoyed the show. Hit the "fuck I needed this" spot after a bunch of crazy work weeks. Also got to meet someone I've known through FB; s/he (she is transitioning to he) was running the merch table. So despite not being perfect, was a great time and just what the doctor of sanity ordered!
  20. Sorry to hear of the woes upon woes....sending multitudes of hugs and wishing you sleep and fast/full healing!
  21. Ooh whee, this judge is MAD! https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.cand.364265/gov.uscourts.cand.364265.1508.0_2.pdf Not a lawyer, but I reckon the Apple VP of Finance may be headed for some jail time?
  22. I wanted to post an update from the weekend earlier, but I was waiting for the group photo... Needless to say it was a great day. There was a lot of driving for myself, I just live too far away from everything these days. But the weather was perfect and it was a great day of sharing and having a lovely walk around the lake. Engaging people along the way to share our mission. We invited two other organizations, Living with Conviction, and Civil Survival, to help share their stories and support as well. We ended up just under $13,000! from our $15k goal. Thanks again and with much gratitude to all. Cheers - Mikey
  23. The Philadelphians by Benny Golson (1958) https://album.link/fbgwzv0d5gkvd Example: 1958 Blue Note Goodness.
