Do It Yourself

Fight the Man, DIY Power!

  1. Hi All, I have an abundance of 6sn7 family tubes and I wish to make a headphone amplifier using ONLY the 6sn7 throughout. I have been looking but cant find anything - Either OTL or TX output, I dont mind, I would think that the 6sn7, especially in parallel would have enough juice to supply my Sennheiser HD650. Please, any suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks to anyone who cares to answer! DerrO

I have a strange question. I'm running to an issue paralleling four 2SK170/2SJ74 JFETs where the noise from the degeneration resistors is something I'd like to overcome. I'm wondering if anyone knows of a scheme where at most a single sources resistor is used (i.e. all the sources are tied together before this) and some sort of a a servo arrangement is used. I'm looking for a way to avoid super tightly matched devices as well. I understand the scheme used in the Xono and say the Vendetta phonostages, as well as a number of the Borbely designs, but these aren't exactly what I want. Feedback is acceptable as well.

  3. Started by The Expanding Man,

I have the boards from Justin (KGSS and BH power supply). I'm having some trouble locating a BOM for both, a circuit diagram and a parts overlay image. So far, all I can find is this: http://gilmore2.chem.northwestern.edu/projects/showfile.php?file=gilmore2_prj.htm Any kind souls care to point me in the right direction?

I want to match some PRP resistors to 0.10% so I read tangent's blog on this and I need a meter with 10,000 counts or better. Is this worth doing or am I wasting my time? I was wondering what everyone else's experiences were?

  5. Looking for DIY amp cases that resemble the ARC amps. So must be silver and the love handles are a nice touch Needs to be around 16" length along the front of the case. Thanks guys!

with that video of a home made tube going round these days... (and it turns out that guy was someone i worked with back in the midwest hifi days 30 years ago) I figured i would show a picture of a tube i made by hand in 1976 (at zenith) Has a couple of bugs in it. (actually a bug and a butterfly) http://gilmore.chem.northwestern.edu/tube1.jpg http://gilmore.chem.northwestern.edu/tube2.jpg Proving without a doubt that i was nuttier, longer than just about anyone. (made from picture tube necks)

  9. Started by spritzer,

Who needs low distortion and high power? What about some high distortion, high noise and very limited power output. Apparently some people want that in an amp... This has been a long time coming but this one will bear a striking resemblance to certain production amps but combine dynamic and electrostatic output in one amp. More to come...

  10. Hey guys, My friend is looking into doing some recordings. He asked me if there is a difference between the XLR Microphone cables and XLR balanced audio interconnects. I didn't know the answer to that. Can someone offer some guidance in this matter? Thanks!!

  11. Started by kevin gilmore,

This has been needed for a while. For those with problematic DAC's that put out a bit of DC, and balanced headphone amplifiers happy to amplify said DC and produce differential DC on the output... http://gilmore.chem.northwestern.edu/protector.jpg This is the one case where ti kan's protection board does not work, unless you want to use 2 of them.
