Thought some of the Jazz, or even simply piano, fans here might be interested in this Kevin Whitehead audio review of Ran Blakes newest: Ran Blake: Ghosts In The Piano : NPR Music . Immediately ordered.

There seem to be a lot of jazz fans here, and a number of SF Bay Area folks as well. If you get a chance to make it out to Oaktown, the Oakland Museum of California has an exhibit, "Birth of the Cool," highlighting jazz, design and art from midcentury California. For a jazz newbie like me, it was very educational. Even if you are an expert, there are a lot of audio/video works to enjoy, and a nice collection of photographs of many jazz greats taken by William Claxton. I was wondering if anyone here had any experiences with RVG Blue Note remasters? I've been looking to re-acquire some Bud Powell recordings and RVG remasters popped up doing the search. I vaguely remember someone commenting on it here in the past, but "RVG" was too short for the forum software to search.

I am a big fan of Christian McBride, Steve Gadd, Everette Harp and consider Hajime the owner of East Winds Imports a good friend. I am sadden by the huge devastation that Japan has experienced with the tsunami and thought I would just pass this along. Jazz for Japan.

While I suspect that their methodology may be a bit suspect, I like the fact that they recommend specific pressings. Just don't know (personally) where to find a list of albums with measured DR rankings, although it seems to me that I've seen that before. If anyone has a good source, please share it. Spoiler Would have never guessed that Neil Young's Harvest would have made this list. Guess maybe because most of my listens were via cassette or 8-track most likely. Please. (Mebbe I forgot that last time.) I like some jazz, but I have to admit to not "getting" the less melodic stuff. The stuff I enjoy the most is the stuff that is the most melodic. That said, I'm willing to experiment, so don't take that as a hard-and-fast rule for recommendations -- just qualify. Please. I'm thinking I really need to see "Straight No Chaser" (the movie executive produced by Clint Eastwood). I picked up Brilliant Corners and ...with John Coltrane on SACD, what else should I get? Does he have any "Deluxe Editions", or should I stick with the RVG's?

My baby gets married within the month and we haven't been able to agree on song for our father/daughter dance. Neither one of us dances particularly well so something easy to move too is required. Suggestions appreciated.

The new track is "Machine Gun" and it's pretty clear how they came up with the name. It's pretty abrasive stuff. Those expecting Dummy-era sedate trip hop will be in for a surprise.

What the hell is going on at 1:39 of this track? That's more than a kick drum. On a side note: I challenge anyone with good bass on their headphones to listen to that track and say that the bass at that point isn't "visceral" (NSFW -- "I don't give a fuck you fucking fuck" being amongst the lyrics). You should feel that bass down somewhere around your diaphragm.

For some inexplicable reason, ~70% of my listening these days is Grateful Dead (or JGB). As background, I hated the Dead back in high school (went to a US private school, and found these WASPy deadheads quite annoying). At college, less annoying but couldn't care less about the roommates who were into the Dead. Anyone know of a good resource for determining the details of audio tracks of Blu Ray disks? I was browsing in the store, and if I hadn't picked up the Cure Trilogy Live in Berlin and looked at the back, I never would have known that there was a stereo 24/96 track on it. Wouldn't mind knowing if there are others out there. I'm sure there are some good high-res surround disks, but I'm of course mostly interested in stereo. Yes, I already know about the 2L label (DSD and such, music-only Blu-Ray disks), and of course the Nine Inch Nails Ghosts I-IV was the first Blu-Ray I ever bought.
