I've been listening to Public Enemy A LOT lately and it made me realize that the hip-hop DJ has become something of a lost art. Most mainstream rappers are using more electronics than the traditional TT>Mixer>TT setup, and turntablism, well, that's another beast altogether. It seems to me that the simplicity of early hip-hop has for the most part been swept to the side in favour of more complex beats and melodies. This isn't a bad thing, really, but it did get me thinking about earlier prominent DJs like Terminator X, The Biz, Yella, Muggs and Lethal, who were all about the beat, setting up simple sets for the boys on the mic to shine through. Jean-Michel Jarre has re-recorded Oxygene from the ground up for the 30th anniversary of the album. Theres also a DVD with a one-take live performance of the album. I recently picked up couple albums from Johnny Cash's American Recording series (specifically, III and IV). I was excited about it as I've been meaning to get them for a while. To my dissapointment, both albums sounded terrible, sounding really "hot" at many places with distortions. My questions is, are there good versions of the American Recording series? I really want to listen to them, but I just can't get over the distortions.

Vic Chesnutt in a coma - Americana and roots music - No Depression word is that it doesn't look good. a real fucking shame if he doesn't pull through. I saw him play with Widespread Panic NYE in Atlanta, 2001. I had no idea who he was and it was amazing. I have been a fan ever since.

I've been trying to find a way to list my iTunes library. For my reference out in the world, and for sharing w/ folks. Dusty tunes didnt work; nor did several other export options. I had previously been using Tree Copy on the PC, but its kind of annoying since you cant really scroll w/out navigating into each directory. Turns out you can do it straight in iTunes, and you can also even grab the album art. This is a godsend. Me and a couple of friends spent today attempting to record some trip-hop. It didn't really end up sounding anything like trip-hop, and we're probably going to rerecord most of the parts because they're a little sloppy, but I think it actually turned out pretty well. Was just looking at the Late Night TV listings on interbridge.com and would have never caught this otherwise. Had no idea Tricky had a new album coming out next week. Could be cool I guess. For the unitiated, this is the Tricky that was with Massive Attack on Blue Lines and Protection.

I am grooving to this old Paul Van Dyk album, "Out There And Back" (to be fair, this isn't actually my old copy, I did own one in high school and lost it to the ravages of college, I picked up this copy from someone on HF), and am looking for some more trancey pulsating dreamy atmospheric beat and bass heavy music. I plugged Van Dyk into Pandora and Tiesto came up. I've noticed some of you posting Tiesto discs in the "listening to" thread. The album that came up on Pandora was "Nyana". Thanks!

I've gotten hooked on Al Kooper's monthly article from the Morton Report. Kooper (Bob Dylan, Super Session, Blood Sweat and Tears etc) has always been a highly opinionated artist/producer and no matter how you feel about his personality, just playing on Electric Lady Land buys him a good bit of respect in my book. So, check it out.
