Anyone know of a good resource for determining the details of audio tracks of Blu Ray disks? I was browsing in the store, and if I hadn't picked up the Cure Trilogy Live in Berlin and looked at the back, I never would have known that there was a stereo 24/96 track on it. Wouldn't mind knowing if there are others out there. I'm sure there are some good high-res surround disks, but I'm of course mostly interested in stereo. Yes, I already know about the 2L label (DSD and such, music-only Blu-Ray disks), and of course the Nine Inch Nails Ghosts I-IV was the first Blu-Ray I ever bought. And yes, while googling, I did stumble across that Celine Dion disk. Perhaps if …

Holy shit what a great show! That guy knows how to spank that plank! And the whole band was tight, they were really on last night! It was kind of a weird venue, a high school auditorium. There was a sign on the wall saying that max occupancy was 1250. The acoustics were superb!

So, I have a new favourite record store -- it's called Strangeland Records. It's near the intersection of Columbia Pike and Little River Turnpike in Northern Virginia. They specialize in all the music I like the most -- industrial, goth, electro, metal and goth -- the dark musics, as it were. And punk (I'm not that into punk, but they are). And they're having a sale starting Friday. I found the new Agalloch, Unexpect, And One, a limited Psyclone 9 and a whole bunch of others I hadn't planned on getting. Don't go in there expecting to find Katie Melua. Unless she's suddenly become a Suicide Girl.

So I was trying to look up a recent purchase -- Prokofiev "premiere" recording of Queen of Spades with On Guard for Piece -- and I wandered over to their website which led me to their online store, which appears to sell (in British Pounds Sterling) lossless audio. Anyone know what resolution theirs are at? I see "24/96" on the corresponding CD page of most recordings that interest me, but the CD's are obviously not 24/96, and I see nothing on the audio download page.

Bands I Useta Like Some really funny stuff in there. Make sure you read Smashing Pumpkins and Stabbing Westward in order. I also particularly liked the Phish one and laughed my ass off at the Stone Temple Pilots one. In fact, I'm getting the giggles right now.

http://niggytardust.com/ I haven't seen a thread about this album (here) - I managed to get a free copy before they took them down (after 100,000 downloads) and actually went back to pay $5 for the flac (eat that, radiohead). Disclosure: I was a big nine inch nails fan in the 90's. I'd heard William's "list of demands" prior to NiggyTardust!, and liked it too, though I am not generally a hip hop fan (beastie boys aside). I really like this album. It is probably one of the most interesting albums I've heard since American Edit. It is just, wow. Tremendous respect for Trent's productions skills. Some of the tracks sound very nin-like, others not at all, and it st…

So a few days ago I was leafing through Guitar Player at the local library when I came across a short article on Wolfgang's Vault. It's a site which has a ton of cool memorabilia, but that's besides the point, it's the home of Vault Radio which has turned out to be the best internet radio station I've ever come across. The playlist has tons of songs from live concerts by Albert King, Hendrix, Jeff Beck, The Band, and many other rock artists from the 60's & 70's. Been listening to it ever since I found it.

Hey guys... just got an e-mail about this, but sadly it's not coming to my local Rave. FWIW, the e-mail presentation was MUCH fancier than the website. The whole Hoffman/Gray Blue Note remasters and all of that stuff is great, but 45 bucks for one album is just too much to spend on an album unless I'm absolutely sure it has unsurpassed sound quality. What are the definite must haves in both music in sound quality? There are just too many times where I've read about some expensive new LP version of something that doesn't actually give any improvement, or is worse than the original.

It appears the record companies have once again decided to fuck up a catalog. All of the current Sinatra Reprise catalog will be OOP in order to make way for.......you guessed....horrible sounding remasters. If you heard Nothing But The Mess....er...I mean, Nothing But The Worst....no - Nothing But The Best and the horrible, LOUD sound quality then be prepared as we are getting more of that crap!!!! STAY FAR AWAY FROM THE NEW STUFF PEOPLE! Buy the old ones while you can or regret it later.

This originally came to me in a memo at work. But it's a public blog, so it seems worth passing on. I don't have a good sense of where this fellow's views fall. Centrist, lunatic fringe, I have no idea. But I think I'll keep an eye on what he has to say just on principle. http://lefsetz.com/wordpress/index.php/archives/2009/08/02/the-concert-business/ Here are the first couple grafs:

Imagine fingerstyle guitar as influenced by Ali Akbar Khan/Ravi Shankar and Charles Ives/Bela Barotk as Bill Monroe and Mississippi John Hurt. Anyone else a fan? I'm particularly fond of John Fahey, Robbie Basho and James Blackshaw. I highly recommend Days Have Gone By, America, The Yellow Princess and Fare Forward Voyagers for Fahey, O True Believers by James Blackshaw, and most of Basho's early work, + Zarthus for something less guitar based. It's really beautiful stuff. An album from Blackshaw and a collaborator (forget his name, awesome lutenist) just came out recently, under the name Brethren of the Free Spirit. Wow I just downloaded a live bootleg of them and I'm amazed. It's piano, bass, and drums, and half the time I can't tell what instruments are playing! It's sort of in the vein of later Miles fusion stuff, but they seem to be inspired by everything (the Beatles cover is crazy). This is the one I dled, give it a shot, it's awesome: http://www.archive.org/details/jfjo2005-08-25flac16
