  3. I compared the two for several days before handing my original 13s off to a friend for reshelling. Here's what I found: 1. The Roxannes are largely brighter. That's not to say they're bright. But the 13s seemed almost impervious to sibilance. I think the Roxannes give it to me when it's in the recording. I did hear some hi hat type noises that were louder on the 13s. That surprised me, and suggested that not all of the treble range is more pronounced on the Roxannes. 2. The Roxannes' bass reproduction is clearly superior. When set to neutral, I haven't yet noticed a frequency bump. When comparing it to the LCD-2 bass, I found performance to be equivalent. That's quite an achievement. 3. Relative to the 13s, there's an added sense of impact. Perhaps this is a freqphase enhancement? There's a softness to the 13s. I don't know how else to describe it. The Roxannes don't have it though. They sound relatively sharp and focused. 4. Front and back layering is the most significant improvement for me personally. The Roxannes separate "in front" and "behind" sounds the 13s couldn't. 5. As expected, imaging is improved. The soundstage is surprisingly coherent. 6. The previous five points add up to a significantly more detailed set of IEMs. Before the 13s came out in 2009, I had UE10s. The performance gap between those two was enormous. I don't know that the gap between the 13s and the Roxannes is quite as large. But subjectively, I'd say it's fairly close. In other words, it's a big enough jump that I didn't feel any buyer's remorse after hearing the Roxannes.

  4. Yes you can, and with the Roxanne you don't have to turn on the Red light.

  8. So I've been having some fun with this design. I've gone ahead and shrunk this thing way down. Each channel is 2" x 4.5". I've used some really small SMD parts so not for the faint of heart. Here's the boards: If you look at the bottom of the board (left center: R4 - U1) I've designed a servo based on the T2 style with an a twist since it needed to push/pull in the opposite direction. Q1 & Q5 are really small. Very proud I could solder them. Here's some shots of the amp up and running. The PS is in the style of the KGSShv PS. It was an early prototype. I've got it set to +/-400V. I added a +/-15V with the transformer mounted to it. Nice and small and allowed me to use the Antek stock transformer. The servo starts the amp at +3V and within 5 minutes has it down to less than 0.1V (see above). It stays nice and tight within about 0.02V once it settles. I've had it on the scope. Very flat response from 10 - 70KHz (which is all I bothered measuring). I had a chance to listen to the one channel. So far so good. Dead quiet and the sound seems to be there. Need the other channel to really tell. All in all I'm very happy. No explosions and it does what I wanted. I'm going to try to build this into a 7" x 12" x 2" chassis. We'll see.

  10. Quick impressions to those who may be interested (from using them with an iPod Classic and the GS-X/Abrahamsen combo): The sound signature is warm, with very thick sounding mids, which may give an initial impression of too much bass even with the knob at the minimum. But this impression fades away quickly and it all sounds very balanced and coherent; It manages, at the same time, to sound very transparent and clear; Treble in particular is exceptionally clear and extended but it's not at all invasive – treble presence is close to perfect for me; All the BA earphones I've heard (and I've heard quite a few) seem to have a certain characteristic in the mids... an ever-so-slightly plasticky character somehow. The Roxannes are an exception; Bass adjustment works well and makes it sound like a subwoofer when at max, but it's not gonna see much use here since it has even more than enough bass at the minimum. Overall the sound is completely different from the JH13s (non freqphase at least, which is what I used to have), which sound a bit more dry in comparison. I have a Unique Melody Mentor demo on loan and this one (which is fantastic BTW) is much closer to the 13s. I'm really liking it, but unfortunately it's gonna have to be sent back for a refit because it's extremely uncomfortable as it is
