  1. LOL...yeah, pretty much. Here is the bastage that caused all the drama. I was able to save the heads with a bit of work. Here is a shot of the heads being repaired. Only one hole was an issue, but there were o-ring grooves in them previously for a certain copper gasket I've given up on so I had them filled and decked. Definitely changed from the POC Manley to a Rev race valve. Cleaning up the hole from hell...you can see some of the damage still Buttoned back up with the new hardware New Diamond 2618 allow pistons 300M rods... Higher capacity oil pan... Billet main caps Assembled short block with a forged Scat crank and a custom cam made for boost...lift is relatively tame HS

  7. Enjoy Dan! Al, I saw the larger competition @ Clarkson, but didn't have a chance to go in and look further..... Andrew liked Clarkson a lot. Tour guide's greatest quote: "...there are a lot of weird people here....but it's a REALLY GOOD weird....." It's way the fuck in the middle of nowhere though (even though it's close to the aforementioned Mexico, Philadelphia, and Antwerp. And Stockholm, too)

  8. Just started testing a second SS Dynalo I am building for a friend. This one is also powered by a GoldenReference PS running 20VDC rails. 255 ohm bias resistors (R38/R39) resulting in 300mV voltage drop over the 20 ohm emitter resistors so about 15mA per MPSWx6 devices. Bolted the pass transistors of the GoldenReference to the chassis. After 3 hours running, the temp of the pass transistors is about 35C and 64C for the MPSWx6 devices. For whatever reason, this one seems to sound quite a bit better than my first one. It may be due to better soldering job, the fact I tuned the offset correctly (thanks to information from Kevin and Pars) or better combination of supply voltage and output current. EDIT: forgot to mention, I also cleaned the flux residue on this build which I did not do for my first one (did not start following this practice till I built my first high voltage Stax amp ). Maybe this also contributes to the better outcome. Needless to say, I went back to clean the flux on my first SS Dynalo

  10. I'll probably just add them to my rather large stock of spare parts.

  11. Very true - they certainly are banana shaped. When I made my first cases I decided to bolt a 1inch square bar (bit OTT) to the heatsink and tap that vertically downwards to hold the transistors. When I got the heatsinks and bar neither was flat enough so I machined a quick skim over the heatsink and the bar to get flat mating surfaces. But even having access to a milling machine doesn't totally solve the problem if the parts are not clamped correctly they'll bend and still not be flat after machining. P.S John, your fellow Australian has some useful info on all this in case you hadn't come across it. http://sound.westhost.com/heatsinks.htm

  13. The only time I've seen that kind of damage up close was when a push rod wrapped around the crank shaft of my '72 340 Duster. I was basically left with scrap metal.

  16. Top 3 reasons you know your musical tastes are dated... 1 : You think too many songs today are over sung (Star Search effect). 2 : You DO NOT think Kanye West is a genius. 3 : You always have to remind yourself who the Fugees are.

  18. A few really nice records worth buying, at least the vinyl versions, haven't heard them on CD. Daniel Lanois "shine" and "Acadie" Also I have picked up five LPs on the Pure Pleasure label, They are all insanely good as far as recording quality and are super quiet. Bobbie Gentry "Ode to Billie Joe" Junior Wells "Pleading the Blues" Junior Wells and Buddy Guy "Going Back to Acoustic" Keb Mo "Suitcase" Jimmy Witherspoon "Spoons Life" Also have an Al Green on backorder. Hope its up to the same level as the others. I'm going to start chipping away at there catalog of soul & blues. (edit, added an LP I forgot)

  20. Well size isn't everything, it's what you can cram in a small box that counts... My KGSSHV is smaller than the Stax amps but is much more powerful and with a completely regulated power supply. The Carbon isn't much bigger and more than twice as powerful than the mini... Plenty of threads here where we rip the amps a new one. We've not been as active in this but that should change shortly. Time to expose the shit that's popular on HF. Something to offset the fucked up news above, a pic of the ever growing Stax museum. I clearly need a second display case in the living room: 009, SR-Omega and HE90 on the top shelf Two SR-1's, SR-2, SR-3 and SR-5 on the next shelf The 404LE, SR-SC1, Lambda Signature, Lambda Nova Signature and Lambda Pro Being all abandoned at the bottom is the SR-X Mk1. A lot of other headphones all over the house plus a lot more in various stages of restoration.

  24. That was a fun first weekend of games. Top 3 seeds in the West all romped, but that was to be expected. Detroit came so close to stealing game 1 from Cleveland. I am looking forward to watching Toronto fight for their lives tonight as an appetizer before a GSW main course.
