  2. Now time for something super rare... a balanced SRM-1 Mk2 PP. I didn't think any of these existed as there was the ATR version for studio use which had a stepped attenuator and balanced inputs but in almost 20 years of searching...none have turned up. Then I came across this one last year in Japan in pretty rough shape with tape all over it. I naturally over payed as usual but then again, how often does one find something like this: So years ago I did this and nice to see Stax did the exact same mod as me. Remove the 100R resistor to ground on the other side of the fet and put two resistors off the board in its place. The amp also arrived with one channel dead, shorted transistors and almost open resistors in the front end. Now for the money shot... This is clearly stock from Stax as all the screws match what they used at the time but one odd thing is that the markings are actually engraved into the back and not simply silk screened.

  3. RIP Murray Gell-Mann, the guy who won the (unshared) Nobel Prize for particle physics symmetry and the Quark. A genius from an early age, he won a place at Yale at the age of 15 and graduated at 19. A full Professor at 29.

  4. Fun....nice recommendation, MD! Peppy...good power to weight. More tossable than the M4 IMO. Very easy to drive...the rev matching on shifts is spoon feeding which isn't all bad. A bit snug but not terrible. The M4 is definitely more comfortable. Interestingly, they both weigh about the same so times are not as different as one would think. Felt surprisingly planted and tracked very straight for a smallish vehicle. Nowhere near the road feel of the Porsche, but that's not surprising to me or most enthusiasts I expect. I need some seat time with a 911 with some years on it and a more comparable price point to get more context. vroom vroom... HS

  5. Now for something pretty rare... the ESP900... This is the closed back version of the ESP950 made for medical use such as MRI's etc. Not much is known about these and only a few sets have ever surfaced. I'll do a more indepth post about these when I modify them and dig into them a bit. Stock...well...they don't sound good. The earpads are unique to these so when you press them to the head...the sound gets better but it is no 4070...that's for sure.

  11. The previous post was supposed to be longer, but I'm having some issue posting multiple images from Flickr to HC. Yes, the irony of that statement is not lost on me. The stream at the edge of my property. I spent considerable time framing this shot. 35mm F/2 at F/8, 1/60, ISO200. It's just a bunch of trees. Converted to black & white in Photoshop using a high contrast blue filter, then duotoned. I also tweaked the curves a bit and then cropped it to 5:4 (which has been my favorite aspect ratio for a decade now.) The vignetting is organic, and not done by a PS plugin. It's an artifact of how the EF 50mm F/1.4 USM transmits IR. F/8, 1/100 ISO 160. 17-40L at 17mm, F/7.1, 1/100, ISO50. 17-40L at 19mm, F/6.3, 1/80, ISO50. Moar later.
