  1. Put it back together and that was the problem. Offset and balance adjusted fine. I was a bit concerned when I first turned it on as it started to come up but blew the fuse (3.15A Slow blow). Replaced the fuse and it came up fine. No soft start or anything. Lights didn't dim or anything. Not sure if this is a problem or not. I'll see how it starts up in further starts to adjust and implement the opto servo. Bias is ~17mA; heatsinks don't seem to be warming much, but I didn't run it much (5 minutes). Might turn it up to 20mA bias, need to read the thread more (again) to see user comments on that. Can't believe I hadn't noticed that solder bridge before, but glad I don't need to try to source any unobtainium parts right now

  2. Spent way too much of my time today fixing broken blast gates and the shitty planer so ended up giving up on milling the workbench top and started on my science experiment. So cool.

  3. Nice job @Pars - there are few things as satisfying as finding and fixing a problem that plagues you like that on a DIY build.

  4. I'm happy that at least got him to stand up and move from that fucking chair... 😉 It was funny to see the difference compared to other vendors who had perfectly affable people working there and this shit show. I wonder if DCA is doing the Cavalli route, have some idiot show up with an investment and blow through all of it and move on to the next sucker? But vaping in and around delicate electronics like this is beyond stupid. What does think is in the smoke, magic fairy dust that makes electrostatics better?

  6. Listening to more Miles is always advisable. However, your post is the second reminder that I want to watch Round Midnight again (for the many-th time). The first reminder was a Dexter Gordon picture on the wall at the Village Vanguard. Love that movie, Lady Francis.

  7. 'Round About Midnight Miles Davis 1957 https://album.link/i/159135486 Example: I had not listened to this in a while. Good to get back to it. And the Legacy Edition extends it to 1.5 hours of 1957 goodness. It is funny to watch some reaction videos on the YTs of younger people listening to 70s music, shocked that the recording sounds good. Um, good recordings go way way way back. I digress - listen to more Miles folks.

  8. If that is the case, it also failed in that regard. Needed more rhinestones and chrome.

  9. I see an Andy Regan listed as president. Might be "Bluto". I think Dan is still CEO, but don't know for sure.

  10. I should do a second post on 2009 at some point. With that said, Couple Finds Trove of 2,000 Cameras and Lenses in Storage Unit. Right here in MA.

  15. Shelly, Marc, Claire and I had a great time at the Village Vanguard seeing John Zorn's quartet with Julian Lage. Great stuff. Sorry that our Travel Team time has again come to the end, but I am really glad we're getting the band back together! Next time we need even more participation. This place is right next to our hotel. I'm thinking I need to get some dumplings to keep the streak going...😁

Tchaikovsky/Sibelius: Violin Concertos Kyung Wha Chung, London Symphony Orchestra, André Previn 1995 (um - Nope - that is 1970 - this date must have been the remaster) https://album.link/i/1452191392 Example: Not much to say about this. 17. I would give it a try and then set it aside for a bit and come back to it. Back when I was fully into roasting, I started off with the idea of a fresh roast, fresh grind is the best. But Sonja and I started to notice that we liked the coffee better and better as the week went on (always fresh grind though). So then we implemented a process of roasting a pound at a time and letting it set while we worked through the current batch. It took us about a week and a half to go through a pound (a real pound - not 14oz, or 12 oz that companies sell these days -- anyway - lost my train of thought). So by the time we got to the new roast it was at least a week and a half old. This was a good balance that we came up with. We didn't really want to have rolling stock of multiple roasts just aging. But we knew that we didn't want fresh either. This reminds me when we started to fresh mill flower. It was not the best right out of the mill. When we got fresh flour from a local source we would not use it until at least 14 days after it was milled. It was too unpredictable to use for our breads. So there is something about nature that wants us cool our jets a bit. When we transform something (roast or mill), it needs some time to recover. don't we all?

  18. 2009 was one of the craziest years of my life, paralleling 1996. I should do a photo essay on it. That'd take more time than I have, so here's a Cliff's Notes version. The year started fairly inertly, with snow and ice: I took a photo of my room that was utterly unrepresentational of its cleanliness: That's my then-new late 2008 Macbook. Then I had some vintage Mac gear restored: I pestered a sleepy cat with a Canon 85mm F/1.8: I let my friend use my 17-40L with his 5D Mk II: I experimented with sun stars: I got my first (of 3) IR-modified digital cameras: I experimented with zoom bursts: ...with mixed success. I mucked about with HDR, as I had done for years: I met a pretty German woman who worked as a waitress in the local diner I haunted throughout the 00s: Then things got interesting, but that tale is going to have to wait for a later post.
