  1. There's an annual gathering of Land Rover owners here on MV. There's a bunch on island, but people come from all-over. There are two photos (taken by someone else) from last year's meetup: I made it a point to be there this year. I took my Leica C3 and well, my iPhone. There's always "that guy" at these meetings. Not an Land Rover, but a neat conversion. I have no idea what this thing is, but it's fascinating.

  2. Watched off and on for the past week the Milan World Fencing championships. HK team co-coached by our friend, took silver. Of note two of the four in the team competition attended a BBQ at our house with both coaches a few years back after training with Lance and his club prior to a Cup competition out here. International incidents were avoided as no rattlesnakes or coyotes dared to make an appearance.

  4. An ideal shunt-type protection device for the estate phones should have: 1) Low (<10pf) and constant capacitance vs voltage and vs frequency - that pretty much crossed out all the silicon junction devices. 2) An I/V curve with a sharp corner, near-zero leakage within the operating voltage and well-controlled clamping voltage - that rules out most MOV devices 3) Fast acting. That excludes the gas-discharge type. What do we have left? Why use a shunt-type protector, just to give the amp and the transformer a jolt like a dead short when they are outputting close to their max voltage? The Stax transformer box adds a PTC in series with the transformer primary to mitigate this issue - and you know how people hated it. IMHO a better protection is to limit the output voltage of the amp. If the power rail voltage is limited, the amp's output is limited and the transformer's output is limited as well.

  8. That's impressive... shame they sound like shit. Something new for me, I came across my first ever arc'ed over SR-007 driver yesterday. Utter carnage in there, a hole in the diaphragm roughly 30mm across and burn marks on both stators. Other driver was just fine but yeah, there is a reason we fit protection circuits.
