  2. I'm generally in favor of making things instead of buying them, but in this case you can buy such a thing for less than the cost of the parts. If you do build it, you should manage the shield the same as you would on any other project: https://www.ranecommercial.com/kb_article.php?article=2107
  3. Modern gz34's can be even more sensitive than the datasheets indicate. You want to keep the cap small. PSUD is your friend here. You can change the psud load to constant current to determine this. And you can add a current change to check for ringing in the PS.
  4. A Stitch in Time. (Available on Amazon Prime in the US) Really fascinating, at least through the first 2 (of 6 total) episodes. It's basically The Woodwright's Shop meets Fake or Fortune meets Bake Off. What could be better than that?
  5. Indeed. The Disposable Heroes track on Virus 100 is fantastic. That's a great track. I don't know the other one.
  6. I feel like these types of things are usually pretty terrible. I also find St. Vincent to be uninspiring regardless of the context.
  7. Happy birthday!
  8. I think he clicked the wrong face. On a small screen it's difficult to see. @TMoney is a lover of cats. I am sorry for your loss, Craig. 18 years is a long time for a cat, and a sign that you gave her a loving home.

  10. It's been a while since I built something goofy just for the sake of building something goofy. This is a JFET buffer pushing a stepup transformer (LL1674) to a 71A parafeed output stage using some custom Lundahl parafeed outputs. Tubes are CCS loaded with CCS driven filament supplies and shunt regulated bias. HT PS is choke input with a small regulator before the CCSes. The driver PS is dual Jung regulators. Sounds lovely other than for the slight hum that eludes me. It's surely something stupid that I won't find without rewiring the whole thing.
  11. Rick Wakeman, eat your heart out!
  12. Kids today. You have no idea what it was like using Python 1.5 in the late 90s when even perl programmers looked down on you.
  13. This has been the claim of Linux proponents for going on 20 years. Someday it will be true.

    Podcast Thread

I don't know how much interest this will have here, but if you are interested in law and/or policy discussions, the Lawfare Podcast is generally highly recommended. Sadly, the best podcast out of Lawfare just ended because two of the three commentators went to work for the Biden administration. That said, this recent episode on the police state in Xinjiang and the treatment of the Uyghurs there, and elsewhere, is interesting, horrible, and terrifying. Definitely worth a listen.
  15. We renovated a bathroom a few years ago. It was actually in mostly fine shape, except that the drain pan under the shower, which was made of lead, had started to leak. This was not surprising as lead pans have a useful life of 75 years or so, and ours had been installed in 1931. At any rate, there was no real way to only replace the pan, so the whole bathroom had to be gutted. I remember asking the contractor whether all the newfangled and improved construction materials would also last 90 years. He laughed and said 15 to 25 was probably the max.

  17. If you want to match the surface texture, you might have luck with a card scraper. https://www.amazon.com/Crown-Hand-Tools-Rectangular-375/dp/B012M9H8UG/
  18. You are probably going to have to remove the poly. That probably means sanding the whole floor. For the black stains, oxalic acid
  19. The UK is wet, but Chicago was built on a swamp. Things there just rust. The humidity has to be experienced to be understood.
  20. It's truly terrible. The only one I have learned much from, and I have learned a lot from it, is the Woodright's Shop. I know that's not Steve's cup of tea, but I think the information goes well beyond just the old-timey stuff, even if that's the focus.
