Has anyone tried a good tube preamp to drive the Carbon, to drive 009, in order to tube-roll the preamp side to tune the final result a bit? Is it an absolute no-no or a possibility?

I thought about going with Win Server 2012 with all the requisite software and hardware, but in the end, this sort of thing defeats the main reason I went into computer audio, ease of use! The ability to instantly find and play tracks from thousands of tracks, while building convenient playlists is why I went with computer audio, but all these "cutting-edge" solutions have horrible ergonomics, often worse than spinning the physical CD's

I have the Regen, which does make a nice improvement especially when powered by Li battery. However, the longer I use computer audio and especially USB audio, I am getting more and more "issues" over time, some of which are enough to drive one nuts. All the software and hardware tweaks and variations make witches' brew seem like child's play. I wish I could use a one-box CD player, which I still believe has best sound quality, that can play music files from my hard drive without sonic penalties or ergonomics nightmare...

Very tempting bunch of stat amps on sale *IF* one liked the sound signature/colorations of Singlepower ES-1, which would fit the bill best among KGST, KGDT (which "warmer tubes"?), and Octave?
